Essential Foods That You Should Always Have In The Fridge

Refrigerators, better known as fridges, have been around for more than 250 years. Today, fridges come in various shapes and sizes. Mini fridges are the new norm for people looking to cool their beverages and snacks without having to leave their room.

Looking into someone’s fridge is an easy way to get to know that person better. A lot of people don’t realize it, but what you keep in your fridge is usually a reflection of your dietary habits and lifestyle. For example, if your fridge has more beverages than food items, it could mean that you enjoy eating out and you do it often.
However, other people’s opinion shouldn’t concern you. What you should be concerned about is that you’re not stocking your fridge with essential foods. Stocking on these foods means that whenever you feel hungry, instead of having to go to the supermarket or a to a fast-food place, you can resort to your fridge.

Cow’s Milk

Although it has always been a controversial food, cow’s milk retains its healthy attributes. Rich in calcium, phosphorus, and vitamins, cow’s milk is good for keeping your bones healthy. Together, calcium and phosphorus form calcium phosphate, which is one of the key ingredients in the bone structure. Moreover, milk is rich in vitamin D, which is responsible for ensuring more calcium is available in the body.

Broccoli

From the start, it’s safe to assume that not a lot of people are fans of broccoli. However, broccoli is one of the essential foods that you should eat on a regular basis. Besides the wide variety of vitamins that it contains, broccoli also contains sulforaphane and indoles. These two nutrients have been shown to help against obesity. Moreover, several studies have shown that both sulforaphane and indoles can protect against cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Blueberries

You should always have fruit in your home. Whether you keep it in the fridge or not, is a matter of choice. However, if you were to have a single fruit in your home at all times, the choice should be blueberries. Besides their strong flavor, blueberries are a great source of vitamin C and multiple powerful antioxidants. More importantly, it is one of the fruits that you can eat in combination with other healthy foods, such as cereal or oatmeal. The antioxidants contained in blueberries, called anthocyanidins, are a great weapon against free radicals, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Moreover, research shows that anthocyanidins have a positive effect on collagen as well.

Eggs

A list of healthy foods that you should always have in your fridge wouldn’t be complete without eggs. Unlike other foods, eggs have two components that make them essential: the egg yolk and the egg white. The yolk, which is the yellow portion, contains all the fat and only half of the proteins. However, the egg yolk contains all of the vitamins. On the other hand, the egg white is a protein powerhouse: 11 grams of protein for 100 grams of egg white. Considering that the same 100 grams only have around 50 calories, that’s a lot of protein.
