Around the world, malnutrition is responsible for approximately ½ of all child deaths. This is a staggering and heart wrenching statistic by itself but that number skyrockets to 70% in the poor African country of Malawi. About 25% of these children die before their 5th birthday.
Project Peanut Butter is a non-profit organization helping these children by providing ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF). This food; a mixture of peanut paste, powdered milk, sugar, vegetable oil and vitamins and minerals is a complete food that is boosting amazing results. On average, severely malnourished children participate in this program for about 6 weeks with a typical recovery rate of 95%. Project Peanut Butter has treated over 30,000 children directly and helped an additional 60,000 children by supplying it’s RUTF to other government and medical organizations.
Project Peanut Butter was founded in 2000 by Mark Manary, M.D., a pediatrician at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and a professor of pediatric medicine at Washington University School of Medicine. With the backing of UNICEF and the World Health Organization Project Peanut Butter is looking to expand its success to surrounding countries, including Sierra Leone.
It currently costs $15 for all the food ingredients to provide a malnourished child with Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) for the duration of treatment. Project Peanut Butter continues to help many thousands of malnourished children through the generosity of its supporters. With your contribution, we can continue this life-saving nutritional program.
