The Trans Dating Experience – Make it the Meaningful

Transgender people. They display a range of physical characteristics. While they identify as the opposite gender of their birth, some choose not to transition at all. Others choose to transition, partially or fully.

  • Transgender individuals have a range of sexual orientation options – gay, lesbian, straight, non binary, aromantic, asexual, polyamorous, or any other place within the LGBTQ community.
  • Trans people can be in various stages of transitioning, and they then face explaining where they are in the process to a date. These are unique challenges.
  • They face those who date trans women and men just to satisfy a fetish or to brag to others about that conquest – both cruel and demeaning.
  • They are victims of harassment, abuse, and, in today’s political climate, have social and legal status as outcasts.

It’s no wonder, then, that, like millions upon millions of people of all genders and sexualities, transgender people have turned to online dating apps and sites to connect with others in a safe and secure environment.

The challenge, of course, is to find dating apps and sites that provide the dating experience that individuals want to meet their relationship goals – finding new friends, casual encounters, long term relationships and anything in between. So, just what are the best platforms for transgender individuals to connect for dating?

What we have done here is introduce some dating platforms that meet different types of transgender dating needs. Some are dating apps and sites that serve only the LGBTQ community; others are mainstream platforms that have included the entire queer community. We have specifically avoided platforms that are small niche communities, because the numbers just aren’t there.

There are plenty of others, but if you are a beginner to online dating, these will get you started.

Taimi – Connections for All Queer Folks

Synopsis

We begin with Taimi for two reasons. It is one of the best platforms for transgender individuals to connect, and also a huge dating app built exclusively for the LGBTQ community, with a current active user base of well over 36 million queer members. It supports every possible type of relationship goal.

Founded in 2014 for gay and bisexual men, it quickly evolved into a dating platform for the entire LGBTQ population and grew rapidly worldwide. The majority of its user base is in the US. Its transgender population is also huge compared to other dating apps of similar or even larger size.

Chief Features

Exploration, Discovery, and Fluidity

Taimi believes that every queer individual is on a unique personal journey that involve questioning their gender and sexuality and perhaps this will be a lifelong journey of discovery and sexual fluidity. Everyone’s journey is embraced and celebrated.

A Social Network

Taimi operates its own in-house social media with groups for members to join if they have common interests. There, they can support each other, share experiences, ask for and give advice, and more. And any member is free to create their own group and promote it.

Proprietary Algorithm

This dating platform has an in-house matching system that continues to refine matches based on users’ public behavior and match likes and dislikes. The more members use Taimi, the better the matches are.

How to Connect

Transgender women and men join Taimi for free by downloading the app for iOS or Android. From that point, things are simple:

  • Taimi walks everyone thru the sign up process, including prompts to create a username and profile.
  • Users then upload photos
  • Option to have identity verified – good thing to do so other members have trust
  • Access to all of Taimi’s communication tools for free

Costs

Users can do a lot for free, and many choose to stick with that version because of all of the communication tools. But there are others who want a better experience and choose one of the three premium versions – bronze, silver, and gold.

All three are ad-free, and there is a progressive increase in perks with each level, including search filters, geo-location, profile boosts and private and confidential communications for more intimacy. Noted: free users can purchase premium perks a la cart for short periods of time.

Costs of premium versions are pretty cheap. Check the app for details.

Conclusion

Trans people have an environment that is totally comfortable to pursue and type of relationship they may want – from friendships to casual encounters, to semi-serious dating, to longe term relationships. It’s a great start for those new to online trans dating. Taimi fosters a community environment with lots of events and activities. Could it be the right dating platform for you? Check it out.

Tinder – A Bit Late to the Party

Synopsis

When Tinder launched in 2012, newcomers had two gender choice – male or female. And there were two sexualities – straight or homosexual.

For the trans community, this was a problem. If anyone had no plans to transition, what did they list as their gender? For those in transition, the problem was the same. And so, for the most part trans people just avoided the dating platform altogether.

Tinder eventually recognized its error, and in 2021, it included the entire queer community – all gender and sexuality options. In a short five years, growth exploded, and today, it boasts a membership of over 55 million, again, most in the US.

Chief Features

The Famous Swipe

Tinder introduced the swiping feature to the online dating world. And it is now a standard feature in a bunch of dating platforms. It was a simple feature. When prospects are presented, a user swipes right to like and left to dislike. If two transgender people swipe right on each other, it’s a match, and they can then begin to chat, call, and, in some instances, video call.

It’s All About Location

Tinder is location-based, and all users must designate their location in their onboarding. They only get matches that are nearby, and those matches have been vetted. They can also change their location with a “passport” feature, if they have a premium membership.

How to Connect

It’s easy to join Tinder on its website or a mobile device app. Another option is via Facebook account or email.

Here’s the steps:

  • Provide your city
  • Check box for notifications
  • Profile should include gender, sexuality, type of relationship seeking, passions, interests – anything that would be of interest to like-minded individuals.
  • Upload some engaging pics

Note: Tinder supports any dating goals from hookups and casual connections to serious long term relationships

Costs

Three paid versions – Plus, Gold, and Platinum. No ads and varying degrees of unlimited swiping, messaging, search filters, and profile boosts. Costs range from $17 – $30/month. Check details on the website.

Conclusion

The trans people have a home on Tinder for any relationship goals. and Tinder is large enough that there will be lots of like-minded prospects to connect with. Could it be the right platform for you? Maybe. Check it out.

Some trans women and men may prefer a more niche-centered platform for their specific dating goals. And there are plenty of them. We are hitting some that have large user bases, so the prospect options are numerous.

Long-Term Relationship Seekers

We’re going to suggest two with some unique features.

OKCupid – Finding Compatibility

Synopsis

This was the brainchild of four Harvard University students who originally developed SparkNotes, study guides to sell to fellow students. Attached to that was also a SparkMatch that had students take a well-known personality test and then hook up with others who showed compatibility. It was so popular, they spun it off as a separate platform, and it became OKCupid. Today its user base is about 55 million.

In 2014, the platform became inclusive of the LGBTQ population, adding 22 gender identities and 13 sexual orientations, including trans men and women.

Chief Features

Compatibility Quiz

Part of the registration process involves a personality quiz, and everyone must answer at least 15 questions at first but more later if they want, and they can prioritize those that are most important. the platform uses those answers to connect two people who have answered the same. they present the prospect along with a compatibility score.

Location-Based

Members are also matched by city location, a good thing for trans people as it protects users from seeking dates in risky ways and provides a safe environment for a meet up. And they will meet prospects they might have never met on their own. Many other apps don’t do this.

How to Connect

Registration is free via website or mobile app.

  • Provide name, gender identity, email address, city of residence and relationship goal
  • Short bio and one photo required. Bio should include key info about values, passions, interests. Making it catchy and engaging is important. Headshots are boring.
  • Free version allows messaging and calling but with big limitations, so a premium version is a good choice.

Costs

Three versions – Basic, Premium, and Incognito – provide a cascade of perks, including no ads, unlimited communication, read receipts, and profile boots. Incognito is sort of self-explanatory.

For details on pricing and specific perks, check out the website.

Conclusion

Anyone not looking for a serious partnership for the long-haul should skip OKCupid. this platform is clearly serving the serious-minded looking for friendships, platonic connections, and/or long-term romance. If this is you, give OKCupid a try. You may spend a bit of money, but how much is finding the right on worth?

eHarmony – The Science of Love

Synopsis

A clinical psychologist developed eHarmony in 2000, based on scientific research related to serious relationship success. The platform served only heterosexuals at the time, certainly not queer women and men, and certainly not trans oriented men or women. Matching was based on a long personality test and became popular with straights looking for the best dating experiences that would lead to lasting love.

Eventually, the founder spun off a separate site for homosexuals only, and ultimately, everything was meshed into a single site for the entire straight and LGBTQ communities. Today it has an active community of over 51 million., and this includes large numbers of trans people. The focus remains on serious permanent relationships.

Chief Features

The test

The original test has been reduced to 80 questions, and it is required for joining. These are used to generate potential matches whose personalities are a close match. Matches come along with a compatibility report.

No User Work

Trans women and men do not browse or swipe. The potential matches are generated by an algorithm and then presented along with the report.

How to Connect

Unlike many dating apps, newcomers need to spend about 45 minutes to get joined up.

  • Fill out the form on the site or use an email or Facebook account
  • Answer a series of questions about gender, sexuality, relationship goal, ethnicity, location, physical traits, location, and smoking/drinking. The answers become your profile.
  • Add up to 10 photos
  • Take the personality test.

All of this takes about 45 minutes.

eHarmony doesn’t need a trust and safety team for profile verification. Those who seek trans women or men to do harm won’t take this kind of time. They’ll go to several websites serving transgender dating where they can join quickly and for free. Fake profiles just don’t exist.

Costs

It’s free to join, that version is totally limited. Free users can only view bios and send a smile or compliment. Premium version allows access to all info and photos and two-way communication tools.

There’s only one premium subscription – costs vary based on length. check the site for details.

Conclusion

eHarmony is a great transgender dating site and has its place as a prime competitor with other transgender dating apps. It’s a safe space for trans people to make meaningful connections and look for lasting relationships – friendships, platonic partnerships, or romantic love.

It might be wise to purchase a one-month subscription to a platform focused on what you want. How much is a lifetime partner worth?

Transgender Dating Apps for the Hookup Culture

Yes, there are trans people who are into transgender dating that involved hookups, one-night stands, and casual dating that is going nowhere permanent. And there are plenty of transgender dating apps ready to serve them, but plenty of trans dating sites that are questionable too. While there are a lot of transgender dating sites out there, we are presenting two that are reputable and provide a safe space. Are these the best transgender dating apps for hookups? Maybe, maybe not. But the transgender community can feel safe in a supportive community here.
