Watching holiday movies is one of our favorite family activities to get in the festive mood. We’ve been builing our DVD collection over the years and this year we are excited to learn about Holly and Hal Moose: Our Uplifting Christmas Adventure.

Borders is teaming with Build-A-Bear Workshop® for a holiday charity drive to benefit children in need. Now through Dec. 24, customers shopping at Borders stores nationwide will have the opportunity to donate books and stuffed animals, including Hal Moose®, a Build-A-Bear Workshop furry friend with soft brown fur and antlers. Hal Moose is the star of “Holly & Hal Moose™: Our Uplifting Christmas Adventure,” a book and DVD available at Borders. Each Borders store will deliver the books and stuffed toys to a local charity. In addition, Borders will kickoff the holiday charity drive by promising to donate $50,000 to First Book, which provides new books to children in need, addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy — access to books.

Back to School Kobo eReader Giveaway-CLOSED

Do you like to read books but hate to go to the library or bookstore to get them? I am not a huge reader but I try to read a book every month but my biggest problem is I am too lazy to go anywhere to get a book. So when I got the opportunity to review the Kobo eReader I was ecstatic because that meant I would no longer need to venture out for my books.

The Kobo is the newest eReader from Borders which has some pretty cool features. The first thing that I thought was pretty cool was that the Kobo comes preloaded with 100 classic eBooks like A Tale of Two Cities, The Art of War, Dracula and 97 other titles. So right out of the box you can begin reading with zero effort. If those 100 books do not interest you all you need to do is plug in your Kobo using the provided USB cable or sync up via your Bluetooth with select smartphones to your Borders library.

The Kobo also allows you to jump around from book to book and chapter to chapter just like you would if you had a printed book in your hands. I also like the weight, size and the quilted back which gives you a real book feel. Since the Kobo supports PDF files you will be able to view images in graphic novels and other illustrated texts.

For those of you tech people out their here are some additional tech specs for the Kobo:

– Measures approximately 4.7 x 7.2 x 0.4 inches, and weighs less than 8 ounces.
– Logically planned 4-way D-pad and center select navigation lets you move between screens with ease.
– 1 GB Memory allows you to carry over 1,000 titles, add an SD card for additional storage space.
– Battery charge lasts up to 2 weeks.
– Supports ePub, PDF and Adobe DRM file formats.

This is my first eReader so I do not have anything to compare it to but for me the price is right at $149.99. I like how when you have the Kobo turned off the cover image of the current book you are reading is displayed just like you would see if you closed a printed book. I do have to be honest that at first this feature made me think that I did not have the Kobo turned off properly. Also, I did have trouble figuring out how to move from book to book but after a little playing I did get it figured out. For me it took a total of 15-20 minutes to figure out and that is probably long. I would assume if you have used an eReader before your learning curve would be a lot less then mine. I was disappointed to see that the Kobo did not have a WIFI feature but as I mentioned above you are able to sync up to your library via Bluetooth using select smartphones. I have a Blackberry which is a supported device for the Kobo but I still have not tested this feature out yet.

All in all the Kobo eReader is an awesome device that I would recommend to friends and family and is perfect for anyone who loves to read but hates the hassle of buying, borrowing and returning books. The Kobo will make your reading experience easier and more pleasurable.

Would that student in your life benefit from the simplicity of a Kobo eReader? Win 1 here at LookWhatMomFound…and Dad too!  Visit the Border’s e-book store and tell me a title you would download for yourself.

Border’s Tip of the Week-Reading Under the Stars

Make it magical under the stars. Like dinner, dancing and sleeping, reading can become the ultimate adventure if done under the stars or by the light of the moon.

Read Out Under the Stars! brought to you from Harper Collins
Consider camping out for a night in your backyard! Take the opportunity to unplug from TV, computers and other distractions and connect as a family by sharing some of your own childhood favorite books with your own kids by camp light in your own backyard.

This weekend Shae and I spent reading 10 Flashing Fireflies while real fireflies danced around us. We settled in at dusk with a pile of books and read until all the books were read. This was new for us, we’d never had this kind of little adventure but it’s turning into a regular event now. Last night we read The Boy Who Wouldn’t Go To Bed and she ended up as sleepy as the character.

Border’s is encouraging reader of all ages to switch up how they read, what they read and especially how much. Remember until August 26th, Border’s is rewarding your kids with a free book when they read 10 of their own. Border’s Double Dog Dare Program is a great way to entice summer reading to avoid brain melt while school is out and best of all it’s FREE. Visit your local Border’s store or online for complete details and rules and for an order form.

Border’s Double Dog Dare Summer Reading Tip #3

Bring a story to life!
Whether you and your kids act out the story, describe the scenery, costumes and characters or introduce different voices bring a new life to the same old story.

One of Shae’s favorite things to do is sit in the tub and say, “Mommy, I have a story to tell you”.  She then pieces together bits of a story and acts it out with her tub animals while I sit on the floor and watch.  She may not remember all of the words or scenes or even the correct plot but what she is doing is bringing a new life to something already familiar to her.

Harper Collins has the following tips to broaden the adventure of reading.

A good book lets your child’s imagination run free to visit new worlds. After your child reads a book, help him or her to use other creative parts of their brain and build the world even more by acting out their favorite scene from the book. It’s a great way to have family fun on a summer night, or to bring together your child’s friends on a rainy afternoon. Even better, video the performance and you’ll have a great memory to revisit later! Here are a few tips:

  • Have your child imagine what the book would look like as a movie
  • Let them design what the scenery would look like
  • Encourage your child to choose their favorite character, and explain why
  • And have fun!

Check out Border’s for a wide selection of books for the kids and you! Until August 26th, kids get a free book just for reading 10 of their choice.  Visit Border’s Double Dog Dare page for complete details and the entry form.  Don’t forget to enter to win 1 of 2 $100 Border’s Gift Cards being given away right here.

Border’s Double Dog Dares You to Read This Summer plus (2) $100 GC Giveaway-CLOSED

Your kids that is! Border’s is challenging kids age 12 to keep up with their summer reading. Simply read 10 books and get 1 free!
Yup, it’s that easy! Kids, read 10 books, log them on the Double-Dog Dare form and bring it into any Borders store and get your choice of 1 of selected titles for free.

Summer unfortunately has the reputation of the mind-drain. All the learning kids do during the regular school year slowly leaks out while swimming, playing ball, climbing trees and vegging out on the sofa. This year can be different! Borders wants to keep your kid’s minds active and fresh for the upcoming school year by enticing them with a free book just for reading 10 books of their choice until August 26th. Read the books they want then choose a book they want from one of the 10 selected titles for FREE.

How do you keep your kids interested in reading especially over the summer?
Jon Scieszka, author of Robot Zot and Knucklehead: Tall Tales and Almost True Stories of Growing up Scieszka says “If you want to inspire your boy reader, expand your definition of reading to include non-fiction, graphic novels, funny books, wordless books, audio books and magazines. Summer reading is a great time to explore texts that aren’t covered/allowed in school reading”.

What books from your childhood would you like to introduce to your kids/friend’s kids/family this summer to start them on a path to lifelong readers? This is your chance to win 1 of 2 $100 Border’s Gift Cards at LookWhatMomFound…and Dad too!
