Enjoying the Fruits of Our Labor from @HomeDepot #Digin

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of The Home Depot

Our backyard is more than just a patch of green grass.  It’s an outdoor living space.  It’s a getaway from the noise and distractions of the tv and computer.  It’s a breath of fresh air after hours of working at desk.

Each year our yard is transformed into garden to feed our family, a healthy bed of grass for our dogs to lounge and play area for the kids.  We work for hours and  hours getting everything just right so it’s comfortable and inviting not just for us but for friends and family for holidays and bbqs.  The deck is an extension of our yard and holds herbs, plants and flowers.  Tending to these also takes time and effort.

Without the multiple runs to Home Depot each season we wouldn’t have learned so much about lawn care to be able to enjoy our yard as much as we do.  We wouldn’t know how to treat for crabgrass or dandelions or when the best time to plant out tomatoes without the help from the knowledgeable associates in the store.

In fact we rely on Home Depot for most of our home projects big and small.

This spring we dedicated so much time and effort to create the space that we truly wanted and we aren’t done.  The grass is healthy and for the most part weed free, the veggies will soon be planted from the greenhouse the kids started a few weeks back and the deck furniture is cleaned off and ready to use.  I have a plan to bring in a fire pit and Adirondack chairs so we have a safe spot to roast marshmallows for s’mores.

Our experience with Home Depot has always been a great one but this year taught us so much about how to not only achieve a perfectly healthy lawn but how to maintain it throughout the warm summer months and into fall.  I look forward to enjoying what Home Depot helped us create these last few weeks.

The Many Steps for a Green Lawn with @HomeDepot #digin

This is a sponsored post but all opinions are my own.
Getting our backyard lawn to a state that we are proud of wasn’t hard but needed the right steps. We listened to the advice of the experts from Home Depot and following maintenance schedules so that we guaranteed ourselves good results.

One month after the first mow, application of fertilizer/feed and using a Flexogen garden hose by Gilmour to water we have the greenest lawn we ever had in this home. It took a few steps with a few products but it was worth it to give us something we want enjoy all summer long.

We started with a cleaned up yard. The kids helped pull weeds and toss rocks out of the grass. The shrubs were trimmed back and the garden beds were cleaned of weeds.

The grass was treated with Scotts Turf Builder 15.97 lb. Fertilizer with Plus 2 Weed Control We had heard some horror stories about this product from people saying it burned their lawn. The research we did found out that they were not applying correctly. We’ve had success in the past so felt confident in applying again.

In fact within days we saw a decrease in weeds and increase in plusher grass. We back up to a large community space that is filled with weeds so keeping them away from our yard takes a couple extra steps. We do some spot treatments using a weed and crabgrass killer. This works great for those mutant dandelions and spaces under the deck stairs or along the fence line. With just 2 applications the changes are incredible.

Another obstacle we have to contend with are the dogs. They are little dogs so their damage isn’t threatening to the entire look and health of the yard. We are filling in the bare spots with an repair seed.

The side yard was its own beast. The shrubs were so overgrown. Right now we have a mix of boxwoods, butterfly bush and peonies and everything has flourished just with a little extra care and nutrient. I’ll be honest and say I don’t spend too much time tending to that part of the house. It’s green when it needs to be, covers the dull concrete wall as people pull up and that’s all I cared about. This year I want flowers and shrubs that impress.

Getting the Yard and Lawn in Better Shape with @HomeDepot #DigIn

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of The Home Depot. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The shopping trip to Home Depot went well. The associates were helpful in telling us how to prep the yard for green lawn. They talked us through the clean up process before applying our fertilizers and plant food. We had to get rid of the dead branches, mow our grass a little taller and aerate the spots the dogs have packed down for the last few months.

It was a mild winter but the yard wasn’t looking good, the shrubs were overgrown and the garden beds were filled with weeds. I also got lots of advice on how to get our garden beds ready or planting and what would grow best in what spots in the yard.
Home Depot #Digin Cleaning up the WeedsThe next step is to wait for it to come together in a gorgeous green bed of strong healthy grass.

The clean up took a long time. It backbreaking and seemed never ending at some points but the end results are so worth it. Thirteen bags of yard waste in the yard and we are left with a clean canvas. Rob meticulously feed the yard with Scotts Turf Builder Plus 2 Weed Control. This is our sure fire way of getting the grass perfect each time.

The extras we are doing are going to be worth it too. A garden of veggies and a corner of sunflowers and Echinacea will make our yard stand out in the neighborhood. We have prime real estate for showing off our hard work and showing off is what I plan to do.

Stay tuned for the next steps and progress of a weed free lawn.

Shopping HomeDepot To Prep our Lawn #Digin

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of The Home Depot.

This past weekend was the launch of “Babiak Better Backyard“. That meant we headed to Home Depot Garden Center to get all the lawn care and garden supplies we needed to get the yard back to its lush state and the beds ready for planting veggies.

This will be our 4th summer in this house and each year we have the process during one of first gorgeous weekends in spring.

  • Till the garden beds
  • Pull weeds from side yard and fence line
  • Mow the grass
  • Lay down seed/fertilizer/weed killer

This year was no different.  At the end of the weekend we were left with 12 bags of yard waste but the results are a clean slate waiting for some color and new growth.

Home Depot is only 2 miles away so we can be found there any given day for any given project. This weekend was stock up time for mulch, soil, Scotts Turf Builder Fertilizer with Plus 2 Weed Control a mini greenhouse for the kids to get the veggies started.

Everything we ever need can be found at Home Depot. Their garden center is filled to the brim with tools and plants to grow your own flower or veggie garden. The seed and weed control section is orderly and clean so you can find whatever you need.

Rob sent me for shrub and evergreen food for our side yard plants.  I found Vigoro Tree, Shrub and Evergreen Plant Food right away.

This has only been our first seasonal trip to Home Depot.  Another one will happen next week for gardening soil and herbs.

Time to #Digin with @HomeDepot Garden Club

For as long as I could remember I’ve always wanted a garden, a full fledged chock full of veggies kinda garden. I’ve also wanted an apple tree. Over the last 3 years we’ve been very successful with tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans and blueberries. Watermelons and peppers don’t seem to like us very much though. I achieved my goal, kinda.

I’ve never done much research on what should be planted where and when; just really hoped for the best most of the time. We’ve had some failures but overall my family has been able to harvest a great deal of food and enjoy over the summer. I probably should have reviewed this “Find Your Zone” map from Home Depot’s Garden Club. It would’ve saved me all the guess work I’m sure.

Home Depot has been my go to each year is buy my seedlings, plants, soil and tools. It usually happens like this.
Me on a bright sunny Spring day “Rob, let’s go get everything for the garden”
Rob “But I was hoping to just relax today”
Melinda “You can relax next week. I want to start the garden today”

We then head to our local Home Depot, load up on soil, mulch for the yard and tons of plants to get the veggies and herbs planted.

Rob is dreading this conversation from me. It’s likely to happen within the next 2 weeks. I can’t wait. The kids can’t wait. My yard can’t wait.

This year I have a couple projects in mind. I want to build up the garden beds, level out the walkway at the entrance into the yard and build up the ground at the bottom of our steps so it doesn’t puddle when it rains.

I know Home Depot is going to have everything I need for these ideas and any new ones that pop into my head during the season. the Home Depot Garden Club is more than a shopping site for plants and dirt, it’s the world’s largest garden community with access to experts to all of your gardening needs and questions. Join, it’s free and has benefits!

• $5 your next garden purchase of $50 when you sign up

Guess where you’re going to find me planning out this year’s veggie garden and learning if I can have an apple tree in my region?
