Mobile aerial platform setups fail at ground level far more often than anywhere else, and the surface that causes the trouble usually looks perfectly solid from the cab. Ground does not have to be obviously soft to be unsuitable. It only has to move.
The practical skill is reading what you are parked on, so here are the surfaces that catch crews out and what each one does under an outrigger.
Made Ground and Recent Backfill
The most common problem, and the least visible. A service trench filled in last year, a leveled area behind a new building, or the strip beside a fresh curb line will all look like the ground around them.
Backfill compacts unevenly and keeps settling. Under concentrated load, it gives, sometimes slowly enough that nobody notices until the machine reports a level fault.
Look for changes in surface texture, patched paving, differences in weed growth, and anything that follows a straight line across a yard.
Wet Clay and Softened Verges
Clay is strong when dry and weak when wet, and the change is fast.
A verge that carried a van yesterday may not carry a concentrated outrigger load after overnight rain. Grass complicates it further, because the root mat spreads load enough to feel firm underfoot while doing nothing at all under a pad.
Where a job has to happen on soft ground, mats rather than pads are the answer. Spreading load across a larger area is the only reliable fix, and it needs planning before the machine leaves the depot.
Asphalt and the Voids Beneath It
Asphalt behaves well in the cold and poorly in the heat, when pads can sink into a softened surface.
The bigger risk is what lies underneath. Basements, cellar vaults, culverts, drainage runs and inspection chambers all sit under surfaces that carry traffic comfortably and are not designed for a point load. Setting up a mobile aerial platform over an unknown void is the one situation where the answer is not a bigger pad but a different position.
Manhole covers, gullies and inspection chambers get avoided entirely rather than bridged optimistically.
Block Paving, Slabs and Decorative Surfaces
These fail differently. They do not sink so much as shift, rotate or crack, and the machine reads that movement as instability.
They also belong to somebody. Damage to a client’s paving is expensive and visible, which is a good reason to spread load properly even where stability is not in question.
Slope Limits a Mobile Aerial Platform Will Not Ignore
Slope is the other half of the problem, and it comes in two forms.
Cross fall across the chassis and longitudinal slope along it behave differently, and every machine has a stated limit for setup. Outriggers are used to bring the chassis level within that limit, not to defeat it. A machine that cannot be leveled will restrict its own envelope, and it is right to.
Watch for the combination that catches people out: a mild slope on soft ground. Each is manageable alone, and together they let a pad slide as well as sink.
When You Cannot Verify What Is Underneath
Sometimes the setup position is unavoidable, and the ground is unknown. There are three honest options.
Get information: drawings, a service search, or somebody from the estate who knows what is under the yard. Spread the load with mats sized for the machine’s outrigger loading rather than by habit. Or move the machine and accept a longer reach from firmer ground.
Where the position sits over a structure, a basement, a podium deck, a car park roof, the correct step is a structural opinion, not a judgment call in the morning.
Setting Up on Ground You Have Actually Checked
Every stability problem at height starts with a decision made at ground level, usually in a hurry. Learn the surfaces: made ground settles, wet clay gives way, asphalt hides voids, paving shifts. Level within the machine’s limit rather than around it, size pads or mats for the load instead of the truck’s storage rack, and treat unknown ground as unsuitable until somebody proves otherwise.
