The boxes get all the glory. Tape guns, bubble wrap, a marker that dies somewhere around box fourteen. But you know what actually messes up moving day? The boring stuff you forget about. A parking permit, a call to the cable guy, a form the landlord wanted three days ago. The number you always hear is that Americans move about a dozen times in their lives — and even then, plenty of us still get tripped up by the same old stuff.
1. Read the estimate like a skeptic
A lot of interstate moves are priced by weight — and a three-bedroom house can easily add up to several thousand pounds of stuff. That’s why a non-binding estimate can go up once they actually weigh the truck. Under federal rules, the mover usually has to hand over your things once you pay 110% of that estimate at delivery. Anything beyond that, they generally have to wait at least 30 days to collect — though there are exceptions for certain extra services and delivery headaches. Nice to know before the truck door rolls up.
Ten minutes on a moving company’s website shows a lot. You can open https://elatemoving.com/ and check how plainly the page explains estimates, add-on fees, and licensing. Vague pages tend to mean vague quotes. For interstate jobs, look up the USDOT number on the FMCSA site too. It takes two minutes.
2. Book the elevator and the curb
Apartment buildings love paperwork. Many require movers to hand over a certificate of insurance before anyone touches the freight elevator, and the elevator itself usually needs a reservation. Miss it, and the crew waits in the lobby while the hourly clock keeps running.
The curb causes the same trouble. In many cities, a temporary no-parking permit needs 48 to 72 hours of notice. A truck parked two blocks away means longer carries, and longer carries mean more hours on the bill. 3. Schedule internet before anything else
Electricity and water get all the attention. Internet installs tend to be booked a week or two ahead — sometimes even longer. 5. Move the paper trail
School records, vet records, prescriptions, dental files. Most offices need a few days, and some charge a fee. Kids also handle a move better when they get a job, so give each one a small box for the things they can’t sleep without and let them pack it themselves
6. Have a first-night box ready and keep it off the truck
Passports, meds, phone chargers, a box cutter, TP, a few paper plates. Tape it shut, write ‘OPEN FIRST’ on every side, and drive it over yourself.

Most of this list has nothing to do with lifting. It’s phone calls, permits, and a bit of paranoia, and it’s the stuff a good crew can’t handle for anyone. A slow evening two weeks before the move, with a notebook and a cup of coffee, prevents most of the chaos.
