On my way home from work yesterday I text Melinda to see what we needed at the grocery store for the week so I could stop and pick everything up. Melinda text me back and one thing that was on the list took me by total surprise which caused me to have to read it twice just to make sure my eyes weren’t playing tricks on me. This is what Melinda requested from the grocery store “ham flavored soy protein/tofu. Immediately I said to myself WTF, who the heck is going to eat that stuff. I immediately called Melinda to find out what the heck was going on. Melinda joked and told me she knew I was going to call right after she hit the send button to send the text. Of course I was going to call we have NEVER eaten anything ham flavored and have never eaten Tofu.
All of this came about because Sabreena said she would like to become a vegetarian. I told Sabreena a vegetarian doesn’t eat red meat, chicken, turkey or fish which I am not sure she knew. I told Sabreena maybe she should take small steps like no ham for lunch, bacon for breakfast or sausage on her pizza. Sabreena said maybe she doesn’t want to be a total vegetarian but does want to stop eating red meat which is fine with me since we are not huge red meat eaters to begin with but we do eat a lot of chicken and ground turkey.
Melinda and I went to Safeway last night to get Sabreena a lunch meat alternative to the ham that she eats and we found baked ham style veggie protein slices from Smart Deli. To me this doesn’t seem like a yummy alternative but Sabreena is 14 so I will allow her to make some decisions when it comes to what she eats. Melinda and I will make sure Sabreena gets the proper nutrition that is needed for a 14 year old. I will keep everyone updated on how this goes and if Sabreena enjoys her baked ham style veggie protein slices.
