School Supply Shopping Stinks and Costs a Fortune!

Most kids are now is school which means the dreaded school supply lists most likely have come home. Yesterday Sabreena came home with a list of supplies she needed written on notebook paper and Shaun didn’t come home with a list. We were able to look at the another teacher’s school supply list for the 2nd grade and get what Shaun needed from that list. I found it funny that high school teachers just have the kids write down what supplies the kids need figuring they are responsible enough to get the list home to the parents. I guess by 9th grade you should be able to accomplish this task which Sabreena did.

Lets move on to the fun stuff here. It was about 7pm and we asked Sabreena when she needed her supplies for class. Originally we were hoping to be able to wait until this weekend so we could go on Saturday and leisurely get the supplies, nope no dice on that we needed to go last night. Sabreena said some teachers wanted the kids to have the supplies by Wednesday this week and other classes she didn’t need supplies until next week. Melinda and I figured why take a chance on Sabreena not having what she needed so we headed to Target at 7:30pm (I so didn’t feel like going).

The school supply section at Target looked like 20 bombs went off in it. Folders, binders and notebooks all over the place and people galore we mobbing the isles trying to nab the supplies they needed. Melinda and I were talking about how when we were in school we don’t remember going school supply shopping and Melinda said her school even had a school store where they were able to get the supplies they needed (none of my schools had a school store). Why does every teacher need something different and usually hard or impossible to find plus it tends to be expensive? Why can’t school supply lists be uniform? Shaun for example needed 3 glue sticks, 3 marble composition notebooks (more on this later), box of crayons 16 crayons or less and a ton of other items. REALLY, why do the kids need to come to school with 16 crayons or less, I want to know the reason for this! Any who back to my story. Target had ZERO marble composition notebooks which every year we run into the same problem. You would think by now Melinda and I would buy them in advance, NOPE, why would we do something smart like that. Thankfully we were able to find them at staples for .99 a piece so we bought eight of them. Anyway after other 30 or so minutes in target we rounded up everything Shaun and Sabreena needed and checked out. The grand total was $75 and I almost feel down when I heard that. We didn’t even buy any backpacks or fancy calculators just plain old school supplies. I know they are necessary buy why is paper, glue and pencils so expensive!!

So that was our exciting trip for school supplies this year. Do you have a similar story experience? If so please share it with us so we don’t feel so alone.
