We are headed in the right direction

We finally had our meeting with Shaun’s teachers, filled out some evaluation papers and met with the doctor.

Shaun indeed has ADD(no surprise). Thankfully there are no other issues to deal with such as violent or aggressive tendencies or an inability to learn. His teachers sung his praises about his intelligence and eagerness to participate and how sweet he is. The problems are his lack of focus, careless mistakes and following through on tasks. We have those same challenges at home along with emotional outbursts; crying.

We’ve started him on medication on Sunday. I hope to see some improvements by week’s end.   Along with his medications we need to work on some behavior management. Unfortunately we are a yelling family; we know we need to change this but especially more now. A month ago we just thought he was being a pain in the ass but now that we understand better what is going on we can handle it much better. I’m just happy to  know my boy isn’t broken.

Thank you everyone for your kind words, support and well wishes. We will keep you all updated with the progress, challenges and changes going on.

  1. Oh yay! So glad it’s just that! You should see improvement TODAY with the meds. It will still take time to change the behaviors but you will know youre on the right track. Jakes therapist said not to be surprised if 3 weeks after starting the meds, they seem to loose their effect, it’s just the body acclimating and may need to be increased. I’ve increased his meds once and they seem perfect. You have an awesome dr tomwork with balancing the meds. You and your family will be just fine!

  2. glad to see that the questions are all beginning to have answers…
together, you all can work to make it have the best results…
over time, he may be able to get off his medication. 🙂

    • I’m hoping with the medication and learning new techniques we’ll be on the road to a happier and more productive childhood 🙂

  3. I’m glad you now know he isn’t “broken “. The meds will make an improvement and he himself will feel prouder of his good accomplishments, they won’t be overshadowed by his other behavior.

    • homework this week has already improved. instead of the normal hour, he’s been able to kick it out in half the time! good times are here again!

  4. So glad you are getting answers. Sounds like a great doctor. HOping for the best for all of you!

  5. So glad you’re in the solution part of this! Wonderful!

  6. Keep us posted Melinda. I know it can be so frustrating and hard to know what to sometimes. It sounds like things are headed in the right direction though!

  7. Glad that you are getting some answers and now have a plan to help Shaun out. I’m still praying for you.

  8. I am so glad you are taking a proactive role in helping him out!

    • i couldn’t imagine letting him struggle any longer. hopefully the updates from the teachers are positive and they see good changes.

  9. Well, we are a yelling family as well. Not all the time, but I have my moments. Most times it’s easy to forget about the ADD because we want them to “get” it, figure it out, and have the meds work 24/7. I’m thankful the meds he’s on seem to be working during school. At home it can be a different story. They’re still little boys and will behave that way even on the meds. Being a mom with ADD I forget a ton of stuff and I’m part of the problem, which isn’t helpful at ALL! I’m just glad he’s started meds now (unfortunately in 6th grade) instead of waiting almost 35 yrs like I did. You are setting Shaun up to succeed and for that you should be commended!!

  10. Glad you have found out the problem and are working with a Dr to get it resolved. Honestly when i read this: “The problems are his lack of focus, careless mistakes and following through on tasks” – I thought it was ME! LOL! My family has ADD throughout – but all managed to be contributing members of society, intelligent and really good people – I am sure your little guy will be the same!

    • he’s already a great kid and so lovable just a bit all over the place. this week was good thought, we’re on a good roll!
      thanks
