The legalization of marijuana is on the fast track in the state of Connecticut. Lawmakers from both parties are in the final stages of drafting a bill that would allow adults 21 years and older to possess, grow, and/or purchase marijuana.
A group of bipartisan state lawmakers in Connecticut say they are close to a deal that would legalize recreational marijuana in the state. “The bill is going to pass this week,” said Sen. John Kissel (D-Enfield), the co-chair of the committee that is working on the proposal.
With Democrats taking over both Connecticut’s House and Senate, the bill to legalize marijuana—which could make it the ninth state to end the prohibition, and the first in New England—is expected to pass. The bill would allow adults to possess up to one ounce of marijuana and grow up to six plants, with the state Department of Consumer Protection regulating the retail sales of the drug. The bill would also allow municipalities to ban sales, which could be detrimental to the nascent legal marijuana industry.
