Today, Americans are more divided than ever – Republicans and Democrats, conservatives and liberals, different views on health care and pandemic control, and a host of other economic and social issues – but there is one thing that almost everyone seems to agree on: legalizing cannabis.
The conventional wisdom is that Democrats support cannabis (to some extent) and conservative Republicans do not, and historically they have not. But ballot initiatives in several red states show that Republicans and independent conservatives support legalization. This is one of the few issues that everyone seems to support, no matter what side of the political aisle you are on. The prevailing view was that a conservative government would be less receptive, but I think cannabis legalization is now inevitable because of its own kinetic energy, said Sturges Karban, CEO of cannabis logistics company ManifestSeven. While legalization was a political taboo at the federal level in 2016, it now appears that 2021 will be a turning point for the industry. People are just much less afraid of marijuana.
We have a lot of action in unexpected states this year. As cannabis use becomes more and more widespread worldwide, especially after all the changes brought about by COVID-19, it seems that new legislation at the federal level is inevitable. A number of Republican states already have very lax cannabis regulations, and a few swing states have fully legalized it. Currently, 16 states and Washington State have fully legalized cannabis for adult use, 37 states have medical cannabis programs, and 46 states have decriminalized cannabis to some degree. A survey of 500 New Jersey voters by the law firm Branch Eichler LLC found that Republicans were more supportive of adult-use cannabis than expected – 75 percent of Democrats and 52 percent of Republicans. People are just a lot less afraid of marijuana than they used to be, says John Funburg, co-chair of the cannabis practice at the New Jersey law firm that conducted the study. He attributes that to the success of the state’s medical program, which has grown from 20,000 participants three years ago to 90,000 today and has removed the stigma of marijuana for thousands of people on both sides of the political divide.
Red states consider cannabis use
Conservative states have been somewhat slower to adapt to the changing times, but in recent months there seems to have been a significant shift in attitude as numerous cannabis-related bills have been introduced in these states. One of the most notable is Texas. In recent months, the Texas Senate has passed several bills to decriminalize cannabis, expand the existing medical industry, reduce fines for THC concentrates, and mandate research on psychedelics. Last month, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee passed a limited medical cannabis law that increases the THC content of cannabis products to 0.9 percent, three times the federal limit. In addition, several new medical conditions are added to the list of medical conditions that allow the use of cannabis. Louisiana just passed House Bill 391, which allows dispensaries to sell smokable flower products and allows patients to purchase no more than 2.5 ounces every 14 days. Last month, Governor Kay Ivey officially signed the medical marijuana bill that we have been following closely. That makes Alabama the 37th highest ranked state. Wyoming, Idaho, Mississippi and Kansas have also seen notable changes. Conservative states are the empirical evidence that there is enough demand and support to make the cannabis issue non-partisan, Karban said. How can you ignore that when you’re in Washington? As bipartisan support for legalization increases in states across the country, so does the likelihood of an amendment at the federal level.
What happened to Biden?
While the blue party is known as the party with the vision and most Democratic politicians support fair marijuana reform to some degree, our current president has a poor record on marijuana legislation and related social equity issues associated with drug prohibition. In the 1980s, Biden championed the war on drugs, particularly cannabis, and helped draft numerous bills that would put non-violent, lesser offenders in prison for years. His opinion hasn’t changed much since 2010, and we can quote him: There is a difference between sending someone to jail for a few grams of [marijuana] and legalizing it. The punishment must fit the crime. But I think legalization is a mistake. I still think [marijuana] is a temporary drug. At this point, Biden has been anti-cannabis for about 30 years. Another decade has passed and Joe Biden is the 46th president. President of the United States at a time when cannabis legalization is an incredibly polarizing issue on many fronts: Economic, social and medical institutions all have a strong interest in this industry. At least Biden seems to have acknowledged the inevitability of cannabis legalization and has even said that he thinks cannabis is now at the point where it should actually be legalized. However, he maintains that he favors decriminalization rather than full legalization. But as we already know from the many states that have tried, decriminalization is a totally unnecessary step between prohibition and legalization that leaves too much room for interpretation of the law. In his last volume. In March of this year, at least five members of the Biden administration were fired, and dozens of others were forced to resign because they had admitted to using marijuana in the past. The decision follows an announcement made just a month earlier, in February, in which the Biden administration stated that past marijuana use does not disqualify someone from serving in the federal government.
Latest thoughts on cannabis in conservative states
Note that I am a moderate, that sometimes I have conservative ideals and sometimes liberal ideals. So this is not an attempt to encourage people to vote Republican. Instead, it shows that even in a world designed to divide us, there are still issues that can bring people together. When it comes to cannabis legalization, the vast majority of Americans are fed up with prohibition and ready for progress. I can personally attest to that. I grew up in blue California, where cannabis has been legalized in one form or another since the 90s, and now live in Indiana, one of the strictest states in the country, and everyone I’ve met in both states is in favor of legalization. They use cannabis products themselves or just don’t care if others use them. Today, attitudes towards cannabis have become more permissive, and rightly so. At worst, cannabis is a harmless substance that produces a mild psychoactive effect. In the best case, it is a powerful medicinal plant that can be used to treat many different conditions and greatly improve the quality of life. Legalization seems like the only logical option at this point, no matter which political party you support.As pot becomes more and more accepted as a part of mainstream society, one group of people have remained firmly against it: conservatives. This is because a lot of conservative values are centered around the belief that drug use should be limited.
