Las Vegas is a one-of-a-kind city. People return year after year to take in the casinos, shows, and nightlife. They think they know it like the back of their hand.
People who have never even been to Vegas think they know it. Tacky, vulgar, and lacking in class, many will say, despite having even set foot on the Strip. And it couldn’t be further from the truth either.
The city of Las Vegas has always been popular with tourists, and that’s only becoming more so as more sports arrive, bigger shows land and more and more people log on to enjoy the best online casino games, inspiring them to take up the real thing.
But to those who think they know it, then think again. There are some truly splendid facts about Las Vegas that you probably never know. We decided to delve deeper into the city and uncover some of our favorites…
The Luxor Sky Beam Racks up Quite The Electricity Bill
Land in Las Vegas in the evening, and you can’t help but see the Luxor sky beam. It is like a beacon and really dominates the Las Vegas skyline. It certainly comes at a cost though.
While many consider it the north star, pointing skywards to tell you where the north end of the Strip is, you can’t help but feel the Luxor team may have slightly regretted it, particularly during the current energy crisis. That’s because it cost a staggering $51 per hour to keep shining during the evening, prior to the hike in energy prices. Even back in 1993 when it was first built, it was rumoured to cost a whopping $1million per year to keep on.
The MGM Bronze Lion is a Big One
The MGM lion is an iconic part of the Las Vegas Strip and it’s stood proudly, glistening in the sun for many years now. But one thing people don’t know about it is that it weighs an incredible 50 tons and is the largest bronze statue in the United States.
Coming in at 45 feet high, including the plinth that its on, it’s viewed by tens of thousands of people per day, and very few people actually realise just how significant it is within the country.
The Bellagio Fountains Are Contaminated
It’d be incredibly tempting to go for a dip in the Bellagio Dancing Fountain, but please don’t. Ever.
Firstly, you’re probably going to get arrested, but secondly it is not clean water. The fountains use grey water, which is essentially the water that’s being used for showers and baths and sinks across the city. And there’s 22 gallons of it.
The fountains can shoot water as high as 460 feet and it costs the casino around $10,000 to $15,000 per day to maintain and run them. For that price you’d think they’d use clean water!
The Most Romantic City on Earth?
It’s fair to say that very few people would consider Las Vegas the most romantic city in the world. But it does host around 10,000 weddings every month, equating to around 300 per day. Where else on the planet can say that?
Where it perhaps becomes less romantic is the fact you can get married via a drive through or by a man dressed as Elvis. But, it takes all sorts to make a world, and you can get married pretty much however you like in the city. Who says romance is dead?
