Decoupage Makeover Wall Art #upcycle #bird

This project came about because we were forced to change the entire look of a room.

Decoupage Art on Wood #diy #upcycle

What started out as a mini project of new end tables turned into a whole bedroom makeover. I had these grand plans of doing an Ikea Hack of mini dressers but like usual with Ikea, the plans didn’t go our way. But then these adorable cabinets appeared in another display and immediately became our new end tables.

Ikea Enamel End Table
What we didn’t think through was the rest of the room. Our furniture didn’t match our new cute end tables or our bed. The drapes were horrendous and the bedding was too dark and heavy overall. The next couple of days we spent shopping for new dressers, rearranging art and photos and thinking up new design elements for the room.

I found this odd art piece at the Goodwill outlet.  It had a good shape and even though I knew the eye chart design wasn’t my style I liked it. It cost just a couple dollars so the investment was a easy YES.

Wooded Eye Chart #upcycle

It lingered in the garage for a couple of weeks while I thought about how to upcycle it and that’s when I knew it should be used for the bedroom makeover for it. I settled on a simple bird silhouette found on Google images.

To start Rob sanded the eye chart off and left me with a smooth finish. It was just a simple box someone had made and nailed together but it was very sturdy and straight.  Next he painted the top with a couple light coats of white and the outside edges a chalky black. The same color as my paper wreath covered shutters.

Then it was time to decoupage the image onto the wood. Arranging the image was the hardest part. I purposely overlapped some of the pages and left space between others. I was not going for a perfectly smooth finish.

I applied 3 thin layers of decoupage medium (letting them each dry inbetween) then went for a unique step by adding color. As you can see it just took a couple drops in a small amount of decoupage and a couple stirs for an uneven blend. Using a dry brush method I gently applied the tint randomly over the art. I again let each color dry completely.

One final layer of decoupage then a polyurethane finish and it went on the wall. I love the texture and layered colors. It reminds me of leather.

There’s still work to be done in the bedroom but this really is a lovely handmade touch. Best of all this cost me less than $10 for the entire project.

Let Them Be Creative, No Matter How Odd

You’ve already witnessed the talent of Sabreena and Shae when it comes to drawing. It hasn’t stopped. Not even a little. They’ve started creating thesewarped, awkward creatures and naming them. They literally will sit together and spit out character after character. I have a pile of these drawings.
The names are the best!

My girls are really creative.  This isn’t even all of them. The pile gets bigger each day.

Portraits

Sabreena and Shae are really close. They do lots of things together.  The one thing that I can count on when they are trying to kill time for fill in the gaps between activities is draw.  My mother brings home scrap paper from work just so they don’t use up my printer paper.  You can imagine with all the drawing, crafting, painting and glueing going on our stack of “kid’s art” gets big.  I let pieces stick around for a couple days then it gets tossed in the recycle bin. But sometimes a special piece comes along that I want to save and cherish and this time share with you. Sabreena and Shae discussed drawing portraits of each other.  This is the end result.

I know we’re talking about a 17yo versus a 5yo but the drastic difference between them sent me into hysterics.  Sabreena thinks she looks like a witch while Shae looks quite angelic.

Gallery Direct Wrapped Canvas Review

Here I go again. I’m going to gush about Gallery Direct and the great quality they put out with their gallery wrapped canvases. This review makes 7 individual pieced of art in our home. Unfortunately I’ve yet to try a different material even though I know I would love the Birchwood and Mirror options. I did this gallery wrapped canvas review to go along with my most favorite print so far (besides my own uploads); Merrymaking IV by M. Drake. I decided that I needed to add more of the Merrymaking series to make a bigger impact in our living room. We’ve been given these high ceilings and I wanted to cover all of them. This is what we did.

I love it. The circus tent, Merrymaking I is awesome and might be nudging the Ferris Wheel out of 1st place.
Something you should know; installation of Gallery Direct art is simple. Everything thing comes ready to hang, just find your perfect spot, add a picture hanger and hang, you’re done in minutes.

There is still so much I want to try out with Gallery Direct. The Birchwood specifically would be perfect in our bedroom since it gives images a warm, organic, feel. Your chosen image is printed directly onto a solid piece of birchwood, the natural wood grain shows through giving it texture.
This one would be so pretty in Sabreena’s room, a bold contrast against her bright yellow walls.

This one I’ve been looking at for our master bathroom, it needs a remodel. The image is so sexy and mysterious I think I have to find a place for it.

It’s quite obvious that no matter what your personal style or home decor is, Gallery Direct is going to have a huge selection for your to choose from. Connect with them on Facebook to learn of specials, discounts and giveaways.

Gallery Direct Photo to Canvas Upload

We got the chance to continue our Blogger Ambassador-ship with Gallery Direct for 2012. One of the first things we got to do for the New Year was re-visit their custom photo upload, photo to canvas feature. In case you don’t remember from last Father’s Day I ordered this awesome canvas of Rob and the kids. It’s one of my favorite pictures of them; it’s from our Carnival Cruise Family Vacation of 2010.

This time around I wanted to do something a bit more special and sentimental. Since I’m usually the one behind the camera there aren’t many pictures of Rob and I that actually look good. We lucked out this past Thanksgiving and Sabreena was able to snag this gem; never mind it was 1 out of 32. I knew it had to be displayed. I had it printed as a 5X7 photo and it sits in a frame on the bookshelf but I knew it needed something grander. Now it’s printed on canvas and sits at the top of the steps on the 3rd floor.

This time I had it done in black and white, I like the effect it brings to this mostly candid shot. Gallery Direct hasn’t let me down yet. Our house has never looked so put together. I didn’t realize how much warmer and lived in a home could feel with art and larger scale photo up in the wall.

Don’t forget that your prints aren’t limited to traditional art or photos. Gallery Direct has a HUGE selection of stock images in their Photo Vault to choose from. If you have a specific theme or want to commemorate a special place make sure to search for the image that best shows it off. Remember though there is no better way to display your best memories than with a personal, custom Photo Upload.

Welcome to our Home with Gallery Direct

gallery-direct-ambassador-bloggerFor the last several months I’ve been involved with Gallery Direct as one of their Ambassadors. I can honestly say our home has never looked so good. We’ve recently received our 4th piece of art and this particular one was Rob’s pick. He’s been admiring their landscape and beach scenes and finally narrowed his choice to the below gallery wrapped canvas.

gibraltar lighthouse gallery canvas wrap

gibraltar lighthouse vertical gallery wrap

view coming up stairs to main floor

Europa Point Lighthouse sits on the southern most point on the Rock of Gibraltar and on the clearest of days has views of Morocco, Spain and North Africa. Unfortunately this particular image is no longer available but there are others points of view of the same scene. Be sure to drill down in the Stock Images to find that just perfect print or photo for your home.

This image along with our Ferris Wheel canvas from Gallery Image represent our love of the ocean and remind us of the beach, our favorite place to be. We chose a tall appealing print to be the welcome as people come into our home. I love walking up our entrance steps and seeing this monolith towering over me. The colors are ethereal and inviting but it really makes a beautiful statement.

Gallery Direct.com has become a favorite place to go and play around with different images and photographs and framing options for different rooms in the house. We personally like the gallery wrap aesthetic but there is a framing option for every style of home and décor.

This one brings back memories

Home Décor has never been so much fun now that I’m working with Gallery Direct. You seen Rob’s Father’s Day Gift and our bedroom addition, now it’s time to see the unique twist I installed in our living room.

Merrymaking IV from M Drake

I had a long wishlist of art that I wanted for the house in all different styles. I am particularly drawn to florals and landscape scenes but when I found M Drake’s Merrymaking collection I was in love. It reminded me of vacations at the beach and how little time we spent there this past summer. I wanted to capture a piece of those memories and be able to see it each day. Merrymaking IV is the Ferris Wheel installation and it’s so much fun to look at. With greens and purples it doesn’t match our living room at all but it doesn’t matter. Each person that has seen it is instantly taken a back and mentions how much they like it. I’d love to get another piece but I am all out of wall space in this room.

gallery-direct-ambassador-bloggerGallery Direct is proud to be a sponsor of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. We’ve all seen the extraordinary transformations of families all over the nation. If you take a closer look inside the homes you’ll see lots of my favorite pieces and artists being represented. You can see M Drake’s pieces here at Boys Hope Girls Hope Baltimore.

Take my word for it; Gallery Direct has so much to offer and the quality is awesome. Take a peek around and don’t forget to check out their Facebook page; they often have coupon codes and giveaways going on.

Digital Artistry with Nomad Brushes

I am very far from being any kind of artist. I’m more of what one would call a crafter. Sabreena on the other hand is the artist and every year we head to the supply stores to stock up on basics and other “ingredients” for projects. Artistry isn’t a very mobile hobby though. What happens when inspiration strikes in the car or visiting the grandparents?

With all the mobile devices at our fingertips Sabreena can virtual draw anytime she wants. The Nomad brushes we recently received went right to Sabreena and she’s been “painting” ever since.

Nomad Brushes were invented by artist Don Lee. After receiving an iPad as a gift and delving right into his digital scrapbook he knew something was needed. The feel of his finger rubbing across a glass screen wasn’t right. He searched for that just right tool but never found it. The Nomad Brush is his gift to the world of digital artistry. There is nothing mechanical about the brush it all about giving the user a more authentic feel while creating. An addition to the Long and Short bristle brushes is a Mini; perfect for smart phones/iPods.

The Nomad Brush is perfect for almost any touchscreen device such as iPad, iPod, Android phones and Galaxy tablets. The brushes require no care except keep them in good condition, do not flatten or crush bristles. A cover or cap would’ve been a great addition so the brush can be tossed into a purse or bag along with the device.

Three (3) LookWhatMomFound.and Dad too! readers will win a Nomad Brush. Tell me what device and APP you use for digital sketching, drawing or painting.
