Back to School ReadingKingdom.com Subscription Giveaway-CLOSED

Shaun is entering the 2nd grade. He’s done well in kindergarten and 2nd grade overall, he’s a really bright and outgoing kid who soaks up everything around him. Where we have some difficulty is reading; he just doesn’t want to. He loves books but he’d rather be read to than read on his own. We were given the chance to try out Reading Kingdom; a new online educational reading tool for kids ages 4-10.

Reading Kingdom is the only program that teaches all six skills a child needs for reading and writing success! A key element of the Reading Kingdom program is that all the teaching is customized to match a child’s unique abilities. Kids start the program with a Skills Survey which shows the skillset a child already has (so there is no need to waste time re-learning something that is already known).

These 6 skills are
Sequencing
Motor Skills
Sounds
Meaning
Grammar
Comprehension

Traditional reading is learned with phonics but after researching Reading Kingdom I’m wondering if maybe that is Shaun’s issue, he’s not understanding that all the rules he’s learned about sounding out letters are going to be broken. A c doesn’t always make a c sound. The breathy h sound doesn’t work with the word “hour”. Reading Kingdom is new to our household, along with a new school year. We are going to work with Shaun over the next 3 months and see the impact Reading Kingdom makes on his learning and progress.

Visit Reading Kingdom and sign up your kids for the program and let me know if it works for you. LookWhatMomFound…and Dad too! readers are able to take advantage of a 25% discount on your subscription, use promo code “LWMF25”.

We also have a full 1 year subscription, $200 value, to giveaway here at LookWhatMomFound…and Dad too! What book are you waiting to hear your child read all by themselves?

Back to School Lindsay-Phillips Scarf Giveaway-CLOSED

It’s all about fashion; well at least to teenagers. Sabreena is a cool kid with a unique style; she doesn’t take herself or others too seriously. This laid back attitude allows her to experiment with trends that I’m pretty proud of. This Lindsay-Phillips Lola Green scarf has just been added to her wardrobe (but I’m borrowing it for the cruise). At the age of 14 she will add fun accessories to her outfit to make a statement rather than trying to blend in.

Lindsay-Phillips is the woman behind SwitchFlops; the uber popular flip flops with interchangeable straps. While SwitchFlops may be the bread and butter of the business her delicate and colorful scarves really make a statement. With the addition of handbags and shoes, Lindsay-Phillips is a company women should know about.

The Lola scarf is super lightweight, but brightly colored. It’s weight makes it perfect for warm weather; don’t expect it to keep you warm in the winter.

Win a Lola scarf here at LookWhatMomFound…and Dad too! Visit Lindsay-Phillips and tell me what other item would flatter your wardrobe.

Back to School 1154 LILL Studio Design Your Own Bag Giveaway-CLOSED

The idea is simple; make handbags in lots of shapes and sizes and let the customer customize the patterns, colors and trim. 1154 LILL Studio does exactly that.

In 1999, Jennifer Velarde started 1154 LILL Studio – the original custom handbag company in her small studio apartment at 1154 W. Lill Street in Chicago. She had signed up for her first street fair and decided at the last minute to bring her fabric swatches along with her bags to take custom orders in the booth. She loved pairing fabrics, colors and textures together in interesting ways, and thought others would enjoy this creative outlet as well. She was right. Women were drawn to this unique concept and the framework for 1154 LILL Studio’s original “design your own bag” concept was born.

Today there are so many styles of handbags, totes, clutches and travel bags to choose from that no one should ever walk away empty-handed. If you’re like me and can never decide there are plenty of already designed options to choose from. Luckily we were sent an already designed LEXI from the new Links Collection. I took it out of the bag, arranged the straps as a backpack and Sabreena immediately asked if she could have it. As much as I wanted to say “NO,MINE” I couldn’t deny her, I mean she’s never really showed an interest in purses so this is officially her first handbag, and a stunning one at that. She’s going to start off her high school career in style.

1154 LILL Studio is treating a LookWhatMomFound…and Dad too! reader with a bag of their very own. Head over and Design Your Own Bag, in your comment’s leave the complete description of the item you just designed; example: Brianna, exterior Gigi’s Flowers, interior Tweetie Bird.

EXTRA ENTRIES:
To receive these extra opportunities for entries, you must fulfill the first REQUIRED entry above and please be sure your email in your comment, attached to you blogger dashboard or easily seen on your website/blog. I will not search through About Me/Contact Me links.

Back to School New Balance Fierce Trax Sneakers Giveaway-CLOSED

School will be upon us in two weeks which means new clothes and shoes for the kids. Shaun is a sneaker kind of kid so I always try to get him the most comfortable and durable pair I can because after all he is 7 years old which means he destroys everything. My first choice for Shaun is New Balance because that is all I wear and I find them to be extremely comfortable and durable. We were lucky enough to receive a pair of Kids KJ910 New Balance Fierce Trax Lace-Up Shoe in Grey/Lime for review.

I must admit the KJ910 in Grey/Lime is a slick looking sneaker. I was impressed with its look and design right out of the box and when Shaun put them on for the first time they really looked good. Shaun loved how they looked and after he put them on he ran from the living room to the kitchen. I wondered what he was doing and he said he wanted to see if they were comfortable to run in and he said they were. Not sure how much a 20 foot run is going to tell him but if they are like the other 4-5 pair of New Balance sneakers Shaun has had these are going to be perfect for him. The KJ910 have a mesh upper which will keep Shaun’s feet cool and they also have a non-marking outsole making these perfect for gym.

From the new kids’ NB Fierce Trax Collection, this aggressive cheetah-inspired running shoe features N-ergy in the heel and NB GRIP technology on the outsole, bringing you a durable, fashionable and functional treat for your child’s feet.

Another reason that I really like New Balance is because they are more then just a shoe company. They are into awesome causes like being the national sponsor of the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure for the 6th consecutive year and Girls on the Run which is a non-profit prevention program that encourages pre-teen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running.

Be sure to check out New Balance for your next pair of sneakers or if you just want to read about the awesome causes that New Balance is a part of.  Or win a pair of boys or girls Fierce Trax sneakers here at LookWhatMomFound…and Dad too!  Girls will get their choice of grey/purple or silver/blue (shown below) and boys will choose grey/lime green (shown above) or black/silver.  These are grade school size shoes, sizes 3.5-7.  Let us know which pair you would prefer if you won.

Back to School Seventh Generation Cleaning Kit Giveaway-CLOSED

With the kids going back to school in couple short weeks they’ll be bringing home more than just test scores. According to the CDC nearly 22 million school days are missed each year due to the common cold and flu. It’s time to fight back without destroying the planet. Seventh Generation’s complete line of cleaning supplies are a natural, non-toxic solution to bleaches and other harmful disinfectants. Using botanicals is a clean way to kill germs and wash away dirt on a daily basis.

This school year, Seventh Generation is sharing tips from best-selling author and pediatrician, Dr. Alan Greene, to help parents protect their child’s health during back-to-school season. Dr. Greene suggests taking the following precautions:

Optimize the immune system

  • Reap the benefits of probiotics like those found in yogurt. A recent study showed that children who received enough probiotics daily throughout the cold and flu season had a significant reduction in the number of illnesses they had and, when they did get sick, the symptoms were both milder and didn’t last as long.
  • Be sure your child is getting plenty of vitamin D from the sun, from food, or from a supplement.
  • Build a strong foundation. Good food, good sleep, and good physical activity all help the immune system to flourish.

Be wise about reducing unnecessary exposure to harmful germs

  • Teach children the key times to clean their hands in the classroom. The most important times include after sneezing, coughing or using the restroom, upon leaving “high-risk” places (recess, naptime, play stations) and before meals or snacks.
  • Sixty percent of teachers surveyed said that they request that parents donate disinfecting wipes to the classroom. Seventh Generation’s disinfecting wipes kill 99.99% of germs* naturally using the active ingredient thyme, a component of thyme oil which is derived from the herb thyme.
  • Stress the importance of not touching their eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • Demonstrate to your children how to cover their mouth and nose for every cough and sneeze. This simple maneuver has spectacular results in decreasing the spread of viruses and bacteria floating about the room, waiting to be inhaled.

Start the school year off on the right foot with a Seventh Generation “Back-to-School” kit that includes everything shown in the picture above. We received one as part of this promotion and I set it aside to provide to Shaun’s new teacher. Win a whole kit for yourself or to donate to your child’s school. Visit Seventh Generation and come back and tell me another product you would like to try in your own home.

Back to School Kobo eReader Giveaway-CLOSED

Do you like to read books but hate to go to the library or bookstore to get them? I am not a huge reader but I try to read a book every month but my biggest problem is I am too lazy to go anywhere to get a book. So when I got the opportunity to review the Kobo eReader I was ecstatic because that meant I would no longer need to venture out for my books.

The Kobo is the newest eReader from Borders which has some pretty cool features. The first thing that I thought was pretty cool was that the Kobo comes preloaded with 100 classic eBooks like A Tale of Two Cities, The Art of War, Dracula and 97 other titles. So right out of the box you can begin reading with zero effort. If those 100 books do not interest you all you need to do is plug in your Kobo using the provided USB cable or sync up via your Bluetooth with select smartphones to your Borders library.

The Kobo also allows you to jump around from book to book and chapter to chapter just like you would if you had a printed book in your hands. I also like the weight, size and the quilted back which gives you a real book feel. Since the Kobo supports PDF files you will be able to view images in graphic novels and other illustrated texts.

For those of you tech people out their here are some additional tech specs for the Kobo:

– Measures approximately 4.7 x 7.2 x 0.4 inches, and weighs less than 8 ounces.
– Logically planned 4-way D-pad and center select navigation lets you move between screens with ease.
– 1 GB Memory allows you to carry over 1,000 titles, add an SD card for additional storage space.
– Battery charge lasts up to 2 weeks.
– Supports ePub, PDF and Adobe DRM file formats.

This is my first eReader so I do not have anything to compare it to but for me the price is right at $149.99. I like how when you have the Kobo turned off the cover image of the current book you are reading is displayed just like you would see if you closed a printed book. I do have to be honest that at first this feature made me think that I did not have the Kobo turned off properly. Also, I did have trouble figuring out how to move from book to book but after a little playing I did get it figured out. For me it took a total of 15-20 minutes to figure out and that is probably long. I would assume if you have used an eReader before your learning curve would be a lot less then mine. I was disappointed to see that the Kobo did not have a WIFI feature but as I mentioned above you are able to sync up to your library via Bluetooth using select smartphones. I have a Blackberry which is a supported device for the Kobo but I still have not tested this feature out yet.

All in all the Kobo eReader is an awesome device that I would recommend to friends and family and is perfect for anyone who loves to read but hates the hassle of buying, borrowing and returning books. The Kobo will make your reading experience easier and more pleasurable.

Would that student in your life benefit from the simplicity of a Kobo eReader? Win 1 here at LookWhatMomFound…and Dad too!  Visit the Border’s e-book store and tell me a title you would download for yourself.

The Safeway family of stores (which includes Dominick´s, Tom Thumb, Randalls, Vons, and Genuardi´s) is making it simple to give back with “2 Ways 2 Earn” cash for your schools with Box Tops for Education and the “10% Goes Back to Schools” program.

To help your local schools even further just look for the “10% Goes Back to Schools” yellow school bus tags on over 2,000 of your favorite items throughout Safeway from August 11th – September 14th. When you purchase participating products with your Club Card, Safeway will give 10% of the purchase price to the local school of your choice.
Here´s how it works:

  • Check your receipt from August 11 – September 14. The total will be updated each time you shop.
  • Beginning on September 18, a redemption code will be printed at the bottom of your receipt.
  • Visit backtoschools.escrip.com before October 13 to choose your favorite participating local school, then simply enter your redemption code to make your donation.

Safeway stores wants to give your school a jumpstart on the saving by offering a LookWhatMomFound…and Dad too! reader a $25 gift card to purchase your favorite Box Tops participating brands plus a certificate redeemable for 50 Box Tops. Tell me which is your favorite participating (mine is Cottonelle bath tissue).
