Magnet School – Sabreena

Sabreena came home with some information the other day in regards to magnet schools. Magnet schools are public schools with specialized courses or curricula. “Magnet” refers to how the schools draw students from across the normal boundaries defined by authorities (usually school boards) as school zones that feed into certain schools.

Sabreena is currently in the 8th grade and will be in high school next year and is starting to think about her future. She is thinking about where she wants to go to college and what she would like to do as a profession. Depending on her career choice she may decide to apply to go to a magnet school to specilisze in that particular field which would give her a jump on college. My thought is if she is not 100% sure what she wants to major in at college she probably should continue in regular high school and continue to take GT (gifted and talented) classes like she is currently doing. If she can narrow down her major maybe a magnet school would be beneficial. It is crazy we are thinking about this kind of stuff already but it is good that she is getting a good jump on her future even if it is alot of work and at times stressful. I know when I was in high school all of these options were not available and if so I never knew about them.

I am very proud and glad Sabreena is so concerned with her furture and is looking at it now rather then rushing to make a decision later. I am not sure what road she will pick but we will sit down as a family and discuss what we feel would be the best choice for her and her future.
