Zip Lining with Go Ape at Lums Pond Delaware

A thrill seeker I am not! I don’t like roller coasters, I would never white water raft, hell I don’t even like to drive fast but when the opportunity came up to do zip lining I jumped at it. I very literally jumped off of a perfectly good working platform high in the trees.

Go Ape Zip Line and Tree Top Adventures in Lums Pond, Bear Delaware was NOT what I expected. I got up that morning and prepared myself for a short excursion in the woods where I thought I was just jumping out of a tree and landing gracefully at the end of the line.

What I didn’t expect was the ropes obstacle course I had to maneuver to get to those zip lines.

Go Ape Zip Line Lums Pond

The course is made up of numerous rope ladders, 42 exciting crossings to include the Double Stirrups, Zigzag Trapeze, Flying Carpet and Canyon Crossing, 2 Tarzan swings and 5 zip lines.

When it got to moment where your only option was to jump and glide across the pond I happily did it because that meant I was giving my hands, arms and legs a break from the workout of climbing and strategizing the complex obstacle course.

I am not an athletic person but I kept up with my friends, Robin, Florida Steph and Kelly.

Go Ape Zip Lining

In fact Robin was my motivation to take a slightly more difficult path and overcome my laziness.

Robin on Obstacle Course

Robin was my motivation to keep going and not cry at the base of the tree

Go Ape Zip Line is new to Delaware. In fact I hadn’t heard of it until we were invited to try it out. The instructors give a great tutorial on safety, jumping and climbing the ropes.

You aren’t left out in the trees wondering how to get yourself out of the situation. I wish I had researched a little more on what to expect because I would’ve planned better for my own comfort. While I had one of the best times and overcame a bit of fear i’m not sure it is something I would ever do again. The obstacle course kicked my ass but the zip lining was amazing.

Here are my tips if you’ve ever wanted to try this for yourself.

  • Wear gloves
  • Make sure your shirt has sleeves
  • Wear lightweight and flexible sneakers
  • Brace yourself for the landing
  • Get a Go-Pro to catch the action

Go Ape Zip Lining Lums Pond DelawareThe shirt sleeve and brace yourself comments come from the crash landings most of us experienced. The ride down to the end is peaceful and relaxing but then the realization hits you that you have to stop. The instructors make it look simple but none of us were able to master it. In fact I landed on my back each time. Luckily for me I had on a tee. My partners and their skinny bodies wore tanks that exposed their backs and arms to the mulch burns upon impact.

The next day I felt good, slightly sore but most of the discomfort was from the “whiplash”.

It’s definitely something everyone should experience. If you are afraid of heights this is the perfect way to fight that, not too high but definitely up in the air.

Monster Trucks Rule

Shaun and I went to our first Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam truck show in Philadelphia back in June and are lucky enough to be going again in July to M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, MD.

Since this was our first time attending I had no idea what to expect other then it being loud but Shaun and I had a blast. We got to meet the drivers and see the trucks close up at the Pit Pass Party before the show which was super cool. There was a ton of stuff to do at the Pit Pass Party that kept us entertained for the three hours before the show. Once we got inside that is when the real action began. Have you ever seen a 12 foot high by 12 foot wide truck with over 2000-horsepower jump and race around a dirt track? If not you need to attend an Advance Auto Parts show because you are truly missing out.

For the first time ever the Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam “Havoc in the Harbor” show will be at the M&T Bank Stadium starting at 7:30pm. With every ticket purchased you get access to the Pit Party from 2:30-5:30 which is awesome. Another reason I am excited to be attending the show in Baltimore is Travis Pastrana from the MTV hit Nitro Circus will be driving the Nitro Circus truck which should be pretty sweet.

Here is the Truck Line-Up for the Baltimore show:

  1. Grave Digger ®
  2. Maximum Destruction®
  3. AAP Grinder™
  4. Monster Mutt® Dalmatian
  5. Air Force Afterburner®
  6. Lucas Oil Crusader™
  7. El Toro Loco®
  8. Grave Digger the Legend™
  9. Nitro Circus
  10. Avenger
  11. Brutus
  12. Backdraft
  13. Son UVA Digger®
  14. Superman™
  15. Captain’s Curse®
  16. Ironman

Needless to say Shaun and I are excited to have a chance to attend this show and are excited to see Nitro Circus, Ironman and Superman as they were not at the show that we attended in Philly.

Without Peanut Butter My Kids Would Starve…

So when I got a note a while back asking if I wanted to participate in the Jif Peanut Butter Online Tasting party I said Oh Yeah! The word party wasn’t actually part of the invitation but that’s exactly what it turned out to be.  My family received a ridiculous amount of peanut butter (peanut butter and honey, Omega-3 Creamy, Crunchy, Natural & Creamy), crackers, icing, pretzels, cookies, pita chips and MORE along with some cool lunch bags and reusable bags. We were then told to do a little shopping and come up with some recipes and new ideas to share with the Jif team.

The night of the online party came, Rob and Sabreena sat with me while signing in to the online tasting and it the fun started right away. We immediately taste-tested baby carrots and peanut butter which surprisingly were good. We already know peanut butter and celery are a good match. The taste testing got more elaborate then downright weird when they paired bacon and peanut butter.

Sarah Donahoe and Cody Adams both with J.M. Smucker Company worked on some great ideas, recipes and fun stories while interacting with a slew of online party-goers with our own ideas, recipes and dares.
One of our favorite recipes that we ate right along was:

Peanut Butter Apple Rings
Ingredients:
• 1/3 cup Jif® Natural Creamy Peanut Butter Spread
• 4 teaspoons honey
• 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
• 1 large red delicious apple, cored and cut crosswise into 6 rings
• 1/2 cup granola cereal with raisins

Directions:
1. STIR peanut butter, honey and cinnamon in small bowl. Arrange apple rings on serving plates. Spread rings evenly with thin layer of peanut butter mixture.
2. LIGHTLY PRESS granola cereal into peanut butter mixture. Serve immediately.

The trick is to pat the apple dry otherwise the peanut butter won’t stick.

Each and every day in our home a peanut butter jar can be found on the counter as some point during the day. Often it’s for breakfast, usually it’s for lunch and sometimes it’s for snack after school. I’ve found since doing this event with Jif I really appreciate the flavor over other brands. It tastes like peanuts. I did share a couple of ideas that we do in our own home like peanut butter on toasted waffles for breakfast or adding a couple TBLS to smoothies to boost protein and flavor.

Are you a peanut butter fanatic? Could your child use a $25,000 scholarship? Enter the Jif® Most Creative Peanut Butter Sandwich Contest for your chance at the Grand Prize. Just mail in the recipe of your most creative and tasty sandwich creation. All entries must be postmarked by October 22, 2010. Visit Jif.com for complete rules and details as well as the entry form.

Join ConAgra Foods to Fight Child Hunger & Basket Giveaway-CLOSED

Hopefully you are all aware that I’ve been working with ConAgra Foods on their Child Hunger Ends Here campaign. The focus of the campaign is to of course raise money for Feeding America but more importantly to raise awareness of the growing problem that is plaguing our nation: our children are hungry. My goal for this campaign is to bring the community together in a couple ways. Here are my ideas that are in the works.

  • Ask local movie theater to donate proceeds of 1 movie showing to Feeding America
  • A penny drive at the local elementary school
  • A car wash at the local middle school
  • Host a table at flea market where all sale proceeds will be donated

This campaign doesn’t start and end just with the blogger participants. Anyone can host their own neighborhood rally or get together. Host a dinner party and let your friends know that for each participating ConAgra Foods product you purchased for that meal $1 was donated to FeedingAmerica.org. You can also simply host a bake sale or flower bulb sale or food drive at your local church or community center. ConAgra Foods will even help you promote your activity with a toolkit. Register your rally and ConAgra will send you the tools along with tips and ideas to make it a success. Remember, whatever you can do will make a difference.
Next week I will be heading to Los Angeles, California for a phenomenal event hosted by ConAgra Foods where all the blogger participants and I will be visiting a local Food Bank and visiting the set of Desperate Housewives. Dana Delaney is the spokesperson for Child Hunger Ends Here and Wisteria Lane is the backdrop for the opening neighborhood rally. I will bring back tons of pics and details about the event and I hope to hear back from you all about what you can do in your own neighborhoods.

ConAgra Foods wants you to share this information with your friends, family, neighbors, community, teachers, clergy, business owners and everyone else you see. Host an event/rally/dinner/sale of your own by April 28th and you can enter to win a fabulous gift basket filled with goodies, coupons, Desperate Housewives season 4 and much more.  Leave me a comment and tell me all about your event.
