What an Independent Child Must Know

street

When Parents care about their little ones, they try to do everything to protect them and take care of them. However, there is a thin line of difference between the right kind of parenting, and the parenting we’ve come to know as ‘helicopter parenting”. A helicopter parent is one who is overprotective, or is constantly trying to monitor the lives of their kids. While the parents may have good intentions, this might either annoy your children, or make them into lazy spoilt brats. The outside world is a dark and scary place; and one day our kids will have to face it alone. Training them to be independent from a young age will provide them with all the tools necessary to take care of themselves. It might hurt to let go, and make your kids take charge of their own lives, but it is extremely necessary for them to become independent so that they are ready to face the world on their own tomorrow. Here’s what your children must be able to do to be independent and responsible.

1. TO WAKE UP ON THEIR OWN-on time!

Rule number one: Make sure your kids sleep in their own room by the time they are four. When the kids know that their parents are there to make sure they wake up on time and go to school, they start to get lazy. They should be set an alarm and wake up, lay out their outfit for the day, brush and get ready – all on their own! By the time your child owns a smartphone, they should be smart enough to wake up on their own! Be firm when you tell them that you will not be waking them up anymore. They may be late a couple of times, and may even miss school, but they will get the hang of it soon!

2. DO THE LAUNDRY

We don’t want our children to grow up, and not know how to do the laundry! When the kids know that the parents will always do the laundry for them, they become too dependent on the parents. Doing the laundry is one of the basic domestic skills that every child must know before they grow up. The invention of the washing machine and the dryer is such a blessing- just popping your clothes into the machine and pressing a few buttons are all it takes to clean your clothes. Any kid can do it (with adult supervision)! Get your kids into a routine, and make them do their laundry every Sunday!

3. Make a meal

All children, both girls and boys, must know how to cook. Otherwise, 30 years later, they will either still be living with their parents, or ordering take out every single day. It is not like we expect our kids to cook three times a day for the whole week, but they must know how to cook. Maybe they can help you chop the vegetables, or cook dinner every Sunday. This is also a great way to bond with your kids. Teach them the basics so that they can always be independent, and be responsible as they grow older.

4. Study and do homework on their own

I remember this one lady who revealed that the only reason her son performed well in school is because she used to make notes for him and teach him regularly. The son got so used to his mother teaching him, that he could not study on his own, even after going to college! It is important to slowly stop teaching your kids, and helping with homework and allow them to manage it on their own. Give them some tips, and help them get into a routine. If they come to you with doubts, help them solve it on their own by asking them supportive questions. Teach them how to plan their study schedule, stay organized and revise for the exams. Your kids will be able to develop their study habits from a young age itself, and be independent and self-motivated.

5. Be able to handle money

This is an important skill any independent kid must know. By the time your kids have learnt how to count and add, they must learn about money. Teach them how to spend carefully, and save money wisely. Give them an allowance every month, and monitor their spending and saving habits.

6. Do the chores

It is extremely important for children to contribute positively to the family. Making our kids do the chores will make them independent and teach them how to take care of themselves. They may complain at first, but will soon start enjoying the responsibility given to them! When children pitch in to do chores, it teaches them to become better team players, and will mould them into responsible adults. Help them create a schedule for their chores, and make sure they do it. A note to parents: Do not order your kids to do the chores; it will make them feel controlled, and they won’t feel like doing it. Instead, make an effort to let them know that the house cannot function without them, and that their contribution is necessary. It will make them feel like they are needed, and will agree to do it! You can motivate them by offering incentives for the chores that they do.

Smile Brilliant Teeth Whitening System

A few weeks ago I started the Smile Brilliant teeth whitening system and I’m so excited to see the results. I’ve tried whitening my teeth in the past but the results were never what I expected. I’ve done the strips and the gel that you add to the toothpaste but I’ve always been disappointed. They took weeks to show any change and never lasted very long after I stopped the process. Since I don’t smoke or drink coffee or soda, I expected my teeth to stay white for a good amount of time after using these products.

Smile Brilliant is a much more professional kind of whitening treatment. Instead of the one size fits all trays that you get at the drug store, Smile Brilliant will send you custom made trays that fit perfectly to your teeth. This guarantees that the whitening gel will coat the full exterior of your teeth to provide an even whitening. Their process is incredible; everything that you will need is sent to you in a kit. This includes the two different kinds of paste that you need to take the molds of your teeth as well as several syringes full of the whitening and desensitizing gels. The box is also full of instructions for each step of the process from taking the impressions to applying the whitener to cleaning and caring for your trays. The instruction sheets also include tips for the best ways to achieve the best results.

Smile Brilliant Teeth Whitening

Smile Brilliant is a lab quality process with custom fitted trays and professional quality whitening ingredients to ensure the best results without the high cost of visiting your dentist. My kit cost about $140 and should last months if not a year or so I can do maintenance whitening every couple months as needed.

  • Teeth Whitening Trays – 2 Custom-fitted whitening trays (upper and lower teeth)
  • Carrying Case – Compact case holds both your whitening trays
  • Impression material to make your own dental impressions (plus extra material included)
  • 3-Way, pre-paid postage – all postage between you and the lab is covered (2-way for international orders)
  • 1 set of custom dental models – created by our lab technicians from your impressions
  • Professional teeth whitening gel – Dentist-strength 22% Carbamide Peroxide in 3ml syringes.
  • 2 year teeth whitening tray replacement warranty
  • Detailed instructional brochure – Simple guide to creating your custom-fitted teeth whitening trays
  • 30 day satisfaction guarantee!

Here’s my update with about 8 days of use. It’s really quite simple to use. So simple that I wear them to work so I don’t have to skip a day due to a weird schedule or lots of things to do. I’m pleased with the progress. I purposely didn’t watch the changes each day because I didn’t think I’d be happy without a dramatic difference. In just a week’s time I do notice the brightening. I can’t wait to see the results after 3 weeks.Smile Brilliant Teeth Whitening

excuse the lighting, an overcast day versus sunny day in the shade makes for a big difference in great lighting.

Shepherds Pie Dinner with Manwich Thick & Chunky

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Manwich for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

Family meal time is important. It’s often the only time in a day that we all come together to reconnect after busy days at work and school. Coming together around the table lets us talk about not just our days but about family matters, events coming up and of course to share laughs. Making sure we have hearty, healthy and delicious meals encourages more time gathered around the table. One of my latest meal creations came from the help of Manwich with this Turkey Manwich Shepherds Pie.

 photo a40aeb3f-0048-4f72-a5a2-2f62746bc9ec_zps05d34a9a.png
I’ll be honest the idea of a Manwich sloppy joe sandwich is not my favorite. Strictly due to the mess involved I avoid making them and serving them. What I do enjoy is the slight bbq tangy flavor that comes from the sauce so I knew I had to recreate a family favorite with a Manwich twist. I turned to Manwich because I trust them to provide easy weeknight meals without artificial flavors or preservatives.

Over the last 2 weeks the temperatures dropped, it’s definitely not summer any more. The cooler nights invite more comforting meals and to my family there isn’t much more comforting and belly filling than shepards pie. My regular recipe is very simple but I knew I could kick it up TONS with the addition of Manwich Thick and Chunky. The texture was just right for this recipe.

The meal was well received. I already knew the kids loved sloppy joe sandwiches but I didn’t expect such rave reviews. I really liked this dish too and will be adding it into our winter meal rotation. I’ve even going to check out the other Manwich recipes because I already know it’s good for so many other things.

Lime Ricki Swimwear Recap

Spring may have just started but I’m already thinking of summer. More specifically I’m thinking about our summer vacation aboard the Carnival Breeze. It’s been a couple of years since we’ve taken a summer vacation so this is going to be special.

Sabreena is 18, has a slim but curvy body but is quite modest. She actually prefers full coverage bathing suits.  She’s not going out in rash guards or swim shorts but she keeps it family friendly. Lime Ricki offered up a  suit for consideration and she’s quite pleased with the outcome.

The TIED-BUST BLACK TANKINI TOP offers a  modern twist on a retro look with panels of colorful floral print and polka dotted and beaded ties.  Paired with a basic black bikini bottom it’ll work for swimming, sunbathing, lounging on the Lido deck or playing with Shae at the water park. The adjustable drawstring on the bust gives ample room for bigger boobs.  This is something Sabreena was very nervous about. Finding separate pieces is the only way to go when shopping for swimsuits since her top and bottom run different sizes.  I’m sure this runs true for many women.

Lime Ricki Swimwear #summerfun #swimsuits

The pattern and color selections from Lime Ricki aren’t typical. It’s a unique mix of stripes, checks, animal prints and ruffles. Each suit or combo has its own personality to match that of the wearer.

Lime Ricki was started by 3 sisters and has grown to include men’s swimwear and 2 retail stores in Utah. The brand was created for the very reason Sabreena liked the selections, wanting modest but fun swimwear.

Lime Ricki Swimwear #summerfun #swimsuits

Feel good about shopping Lime Ricki as 10% of their sales of PINK SWIMSUITS go into Breast Cancer Research and 10% of all other swimsuit purchases go to Charity:Water. This happens to be Sabreena’s favorite charity.  A couple of years back Sabreena sold some of her original drawings and artwork  in order to make a donation to Charity:Water.

2013 Kia Rio SX 5DR

This is a sponsored post but all opinions are our own!!!!

I love test driving vehicles and I especially love test driving Kia vehicles.  A  while back I had the opportunity to drive the 2013 Kia Rio SX 5DR for a week and let me tell you that was a really fun car to drive.

We are a family of five so the 2013 Kia Rio SX 5DR isn’t quite big enough for my entire family but this would be an awesome first car for Sabreena.  The Rio that I drove was loaded with satellite radio, navigation, leather seats, push button start and a ton of other awesome features.  It was awesome on gas with an estimated EPA combined city/highway of 31 mpg.  The week I had this car I was driving to Brigantine for work which was 80 miles one way so needless to say I was extremely happy with the gas mileage considering I was driving about 160 miles round trip each day.

2014-kia-rio-5dr-hb-auto-sx-instrument-panel_100455441_l

The Kia Rio SX 5DR had a very smooth ride as well as very nice pick up for such a small car.  The leg and head room were very nice as well which is important to me considering I am 6’3.  Overall the Kia Rio SX 5DR had everything I could ask for in a car and a lot more.

A few nights while we had the Kia Melinda and I would just take a ride to get out for a little while and enjoy the car.  We really didn’t have anywhere to go but we had a nice new Kia that looked good and we looked good in so we wanted to show it off.  We did have one guy tell us that he really liked the car and that Kia has come a long way in their design and I couldn’t agree more.  The Kia Rio SX 5DR is really sporty and the one we had really fit the bill.  Nice rims, awesome interior, what more could you ask for in a vehicle.

Overall my experience with the Kia Rio SX 5Dr was 5 stars and I would recommend this car to anyone looking for a vehicle that could accommodate four people.

HALO Pocket Power Charger Recap

Just a couple of weeks ago I was sent a HALO Pocket Charger. It has a fashionable look and small profile (think tube of mascara) but I was skeptical because there was so much focus on the looks there was no way it was going to perform well. I’m pretty good at keeping my phone charged but my Kindle Fire often dies while I’m reading it. I was headed to football practice and realized that of course my Kindle Fire had no juice so I plugged it into the HALO for the short drive. It gave me enough power to read a few chapters.
HALO Pocket Charger with wrong cable
All summer I’ve been packing for quick trips to the beach with the kids. The process is simple; I pack clothes and necessities and the kids are in charge of their own personal belongings that they want to bring. This usually is a blanket, pillow, stuffed animal, iPod, gaming device and movies for the car. Shae is my thinker. She not only grabs her iPod but her charger and wall adapter. Shaun on the other hand does NOT and is complaining 20 minutes into a car ride that his iPod is dying. Shae being the nice sister lets him borrow the charger but on our most recent trip I packed those things in the trunk in the bags.

Being the smart mom I am I had Shaun charge his iPod on my HALO because I keep it in my purse. I will admit that the first couple of times I tossed my HALO in my bag I forget crucial items to go along with it. The photo above shows the Kindle being charged with the wrong cable, but it worked.
HALO Pocket Charger #giveaway

The HALO Pocket Power Charger from QVC comes with a USB charging cable and 3 interchangeable adapter tips so that you can charge tablets, Bluetooth devices, cameras, phones and gaming devices. Have an iPhone 5? Use your own USB cable to power up. The HALO itself charges through your computer or laptop, no outlet needed.

One thing to remember is to POWER OFF the HALO when you are done charging your device. It will hold a charge up to 12 months when not in use but will drain if those lights are lit up green. Everything you need fits neatly inside an included pouch so it stays contained in your purse, luggage, laptop bag or beach bag. For just $29.98 this is the perfect gift for anyone that wants to stay connected to their technology.

HALO Pocket Charger When the 2800mAH HALO Pocket Power is fully charged itself, it can:

  • Charge a Blackberry over 1.5 times on a single battery.
  • Charge an iPhone 3 over 1.5 times on a single battery.
  • Charge the iPhone 4 1.5 times on a single battery.
  • Partially charge a Pandigital tablet.
  • Charge the Samsung Galaxy S 1.25 times on a single battery.
  • It can also partially charge a Samsung Galaxy S in 10 seconds in order to make a call!

UMI Shoes Recap

It’s back to school time and that means we are cleaning out closets and drawers and seeing what the kids need in terms of new clothes and shoes.  While I love scouring thrift and consignment shops for clothes I know nothing beats a quality pair of new shoes.

UMI shoes has been making an appearance in our home for almost 4 years.  Shaun was able to wear UMI shoes for a short time before he grew man size feet. Shae has been the main receiver of some of the cutest shoes though.

This year I let her consider the UMI shoes website and pick out exactly what she wanted to wear.  I wasn’t surprised when she chose boots. She likes boots with everything from leggings and jeans to skirts and shorts.

Umi Shoe Endrea Boot

Pairing these Endrea II boots is going to be easy. In fact she’s already pulled out a dress from her closet and said she needs new tights to wear underneath when it gets cold out.

The 2013 Kia Optima SX Limited was super fun to drive.  The pickup was incredible and that was because of the turbocharged engine.  Melinda and I would go out for drives just to get the Kia on the road and that is saying a lot because I hate driving most of the time, LOL.  I really liked the size of the Optima from front to back.  The leg room was great which I look for due to me being 6’3.  The truck was another thing I was impressed with.  We loaded it with a trip to the grocery store as well as BJ’s Wholesale and had plenty of room in the trunk.

20130722_110630 - NEW

Some of my favorite features of the Kia Optima SX Limited were the rear view camera, cooled leather seats, navigation system and satellite radio. When it comes to cars I am very hard to please but I will say that this car had so many features that it was feature overload for me.  Like I mentioned to me this car yells luxury  but if you want to find out for yourself head to your local Kia dealer and see for yourself.
