Decoupage Makeover Wall Art #upcycle #bird

This project came about because we were forced to change the entire look of a room.

Decoupage Art on Wood #diy #upcycle

What started out as a mini project of new end tables turned into a whole bedroom makeover. I had these grand plans of doing an Ikea Hack of mini dressers but like usual with Ikea, the plans didn’t go our way. But then these adorable cabinets appeared in another display and immediately became our new end tables.

What we didn’t think through was the rest of the room. Our furniture didn’t match our new cute end tables or our bed. The drapes were horrendous and the bedding was too dark and heavy overall. The next couple of days we spent shopping for new dressers, rearranging art and photos and thinking up new design elements for the room.

I found this odd art piece at the Goodwill outlet.  It had a good shape and even though I knew the eye chart design wasn’t my style I liked it. It cost just a couple dollars so the investment was a easy YES.

Wooded Eye Chart #upcycle

It lingered in the garage for a couple of weeks while I thought about how to upcycle it and that’s when I knew it should be used for the bedroom makeover for it. I settled on a simple bird silhouette found on Google images.

To start Rob sanded the eye chart off and left me with a smooth finish. It was just a simple box someone had made and nailed together but it was very sturdy and straight.  Next he painted the top with a couple light coats of white and the outside edges a chalky black. The same color as my paper wreath covered shutters.

Then it was time to decoupage the image onto the wood. Arranging the image was the hardest part. I purposely overlapped some of the pages and left space between others. I was not going for a perfectly smooth finish.

I applied 3 thin layers of decoupage medium (letting them each dry inbetween) then went for a unique step by adding color. As you can see it just took a couple drops in a small amount of decoupage and a couple stirs for an uneven blend. Using a dry brush method I gently applied the tint randomly over the art. I again let each color dry completely.

One final layer of decoupage then a polyurethane finish and it went on the wall. I love the texture and layered colors. It reminds me of leather.

There’s still work to be done in the bedroom but this really is a lovely handmade touch. Best of all this cost me less than $10 for the entire project.

The next step in our bedroom makeover

Our bedroom makeover has been a working progress. It started with bedding, a new headboard then a make-up vanity and television. The next big purchase is new dressers. Until that happens I wanted to give the room some personality, a bold look. I went to Gallery Direct and picked out Laura Gunn’s Red Magnolia wrapped canvas print for above our bed.

The Red Magnolia print is a bold floral print with hints of blue, green, brown and of course red. This picture goes perfectly with our dark wood headboard and rich brown bedding. Right now our curtains are red but will be changing to cream but the picture will still look fabulous.

This is our 2nd experience with Gallery Direct and I’m still overjoyed with the quality. I recommend Gallery Direct to anyone looking to decorate or redecorate their home. Don’t visit your high end design studios anymore. One peek at Gallery Direct will give you tons of inspiration for any room style or personality. I’m proud to be a part of the Gallery Direct Blogger Ambassador program and look forward to what the upcoming seasons bring.

Bunk Beds Rock For Kids Not Parents!

I can remember from the time I was a kid always having bunk beds. I have two younger brothers and we always shared a room so obviously to save space bunk beds were essential so we had enough space to just hang out and chill.

I remember bunk beds being a good space saver but not very comfortable to sleep on and that it probably because you typically put the mattress directly on wood or metal slats. I recently discovered wolfe bunkie boards which means no more mattress on two or three slats now the mattress can rest comfortably on a full board making the mattress more comfortable. With all of the bunk beds I have slept on and the ones my kids have you have no box spring just a mattress. Thinking back I am not sure how I was able to sleep on something like that. Currently Melinda and I have a queen pillow top mattress and the thought of a bunk bed mattress right on the slats is giving me a back ache. LOL.

Sabreena got her first bunk bed when she turned five (not sure why since at the time she was an only child, LOL) and to this day we still have them but they are currently split into two twin beds. About a month or two ago Melinda and I looked into buying Shae a bunk bed to save space so she had more room to play. I do love all of the bunk beds and bunk accessories that are available these days. They have come along way and every furniture store seems to sell them.

The kids do get to sleep in bunk beds once a year when we go to the beach and I am a little skeptical letting Shaun or Shae sleep on the top bunk because I am afraid they are going to roll right of onto the floor even though there is a side rail but they love it so I let them have their fun.

Do your kids have bunk beds? What is the main reason for your kids having a bunk bed?

Bedroom Vanity Indulgence | Giveaway WSRW Blog Party

I love make-up. I think I said it before but I’ll say it again, I love make-up. I don’t even wear a lot of it or wear it every day but I have a bit of an obsession. For High School graduation my grandmother gave me one of those glass and brass bedroom vanities, but from then on I knew I couldn’t live without one. My Marni Merlot Bedroom Vanity Set from Hayneedle is by far the nicest one I’ve ever owned.

A dark rich chocolate wood veneer adds that sophisticated feel. Antiqued hardware adds the grown-up touch. With plenty of drawers and surface space for cosmetics, hair care, fragrance and more this vanity should last longer than that blue eye shadow you picked up on impulse. The stool is upholstered in a simple cream fabric that coordinates with any décor. Even though I don’t wear cosmetics often I like sitting in my own space to apply moisturizer, brush my hair or just file my nails. It’s a girly rite of passage to own a little private luxury bedroom vanity.

The vanity comes pretty much all in one piece. It took more time to take it out of the box than to install the mirror. Rob spent about 30 minutes total with this task. It’s a pretty heavy and bulky piece also; it took both both of us to carry it from the garage to our bedroom. With the bedroom furniture and decor makeover we’ve been doing this particular vanity is a perfect match to the look we are going for; warm, inviting, relaxing and refined. A great bonus to the vanity is the mini jewelry armoire located on the side. I’m planning on adding some extra hooks for bracelets or rings.

Hayneedle is giving a LookWhatMomFound…and Dad too! reader their own Merlot Bedroom Vanity Set ($480 value). Visit Hayneedle and tell me what else you must have from their site (include link).
