Steps to Healthy Eating for the New Year

With the New Year comes many promises of change. Changes to eating habits, changes to exercise, changes to habits. Some changes come easier than others. Starting on the road to a healthier diet can be quite simple. Taking steps to incorporate new ingredients or techniques can be done in baby steps. Jumping feet first into an elaborate diet plan isn’t the answer for everyone. I believe that living an overall healthy lifestyle is the best answer, Using the old adage “All things in Moderation” fits perfectly here.

I’ve included below some steps you can take to incorporate into your everyday menus and meal plans. Take into consideration your own restrictions and allergies. Apply what makes sense and enjoy the food you eat.

  • Desserts, treats and snacks should never be excluded. Indulge a little.
  • Use smaller dinner plates; you’ll be surprised how your eyes can fool your belly.
  • Swap whole wheat pastas and breads for energy draining simple carbs like white bread and rice.
  • Serve plated meals rather than family style it will discourage unnecessary 2nd and 3rd helpings.
  • Use flavorful options like Parmesan cheese, spices and fresh herbs in place of excess salt and fats.
  • Utilize hidden kitchen gadgets to encourage healthy meals like the salad spinner, grill pan or non-stick griddle.
  • Cut back on the fat by going meatless once a week. Boost protein with tofu, edamame or flaxseed.
  • Try new cuisines to update flavor and presentation to everyday ingredients.
  • Shop light. Swap regular grocery items for healthier ones; low fat sour cream, milk, salad dressing and yogurt.
  • Use spices, herbs, mustard, vinegars and honey as marinades and dressings, skimp on the oil.
  • When you are done baking those delicious gooey brownies, package and freeze individual portions for less temptation.
  • Stock up on nourishing snacks; fruits, ready to eat veggies, nuts and cheese.
  • Eat slower, savor each bite, enjoy your food.

Firebirds – Awesome Family Friendly Restaurant

If you love your food cooked over hardwood flames like Melinda and I do then you need to check out Firebirds Wood Fired Grill.

Firebirds Wood Fired Grill introduced a taste of Colorado to the Carolinas when it first opened its doors in Charlotte, North Carolina in December of 2000. The restaurant is the creative concept of owner and restaurateur, Dennis Thompson, who regularly travels out west. He fell in love with the feel of the area as well as the food. Drawing from those experiences, he developed Firebirds.

Melinda and I discovered Firebirds maybe 6-8 months ago after a friend mentioned they went there for dinner and that the food and atmosphere were terrific. Melinda and I now try to go to Firebirds at least once a month if only for Happy Hour. Firebirds has awesome Happy Hour food and drink specials. Firebirds does it right on every level so if you live near a Firebirds Wood Fire Grill be sure to stop in for Happy Hour and dinner.

Firebirds menu is to die for. They have a vast selection of items from burgers and sandwiches to wood fire grill items and even an awesome kids menu. Melinda and I will endorse any restaurant that has a good kids menu for Shaun and Shae and Firebirds does it right. Shaun and Shae ordered the kids burgers and when their meal came out the burgers were HUGE. I was expecting a small dinky burger but I was happily mistaken. Sabreena was extremely happy with her fish selection while Melinda and I were both delighted with our steaks. I do not eat steak very often but I ordered the Blue Cheese Filet and thought I died and went to heaven.

I love Firebirds for the food and atmosphere. At first when Melinda and I went it didn’t seem to be a restaurant that we would take our kids to but after we did we realized we were totally wrong. They cater to everyone and really take care of the kids so Firebirds in now on our list of family friendly restaurants. The servers and staff are extremely friendly and cater to your ever need which makes dining at Firebirds a great experience.

If you live near one of the many Firebirds Wood Fired Grill locations do yourself a favor and be sure to stop in for drinks, lunch or dinner. You will leave an extremely happy person.

The Saltine Challenge

I decided to try this after my failed attempt at eating a teaspoon full of cinnamon.  I guess I thought eating 6 dry crackers was more doable, LOL.  After my cinnamon stunt I was thinking about maybe doing a stunt a week if I can continue to come up with ideas that are clever but won’t leave me wounded.  After hearing about the Saltine challenge Greg over at Telling Dad decided he was in as well because he said he was a Saltine wood chipper. LOL.  I guess we we will see if he was successful.

Miss Blondie thought eating 6 Saltine’s in 60 seconds couldn’t be done so she decided to make a bet with me.  If she won I needed to do a video telling everyone how she was right and I sucked but since I completed the challenge sucessfully I will be waiting for her video telling me how great I am.  Man being a winner feels so good especially after my cinnamon fiasco.

If you have any ideas for the next stunt please let me know as I am running out of ideas fast.
