Tips for Shopping Consignment and Resale

In our community the consignment & resale events kick of this month.  At schools and warehouses all over people are organizing clothing, shoes, toys and baby gear to resell to new families. This is my favorite way to shop. Kids grow quickly and that means they outgrow their things quickly that means families are left with items in great condition. Tips for Shopping Consignment and Resale

I go out to each consignment or resale shop with rules to follow.  Doing this ensures I get the biggest bang for my buck.

  • Write down your children’s clothing and shoe sizes on a notecard for easy reference.
  • Know beforehand if they need things like winter coats, sneakers, jeans and other basics.
  • Bring something to carry your haul. Large tote bags, laundry baskets, shopping baskets, etc.
  • If you like it, grab it because it might not be there when you circle back in 15 minutes. You can always put it back.
  • Shop with outfits in mind. You don’t want to bring home an adorable patterned sweater then have nothing to match it.
  • Sort through your haul before checking out. Ask yourself “Would I buy that in a retail store?” Don’t let the price be your deciding factor.
  • Make sure buttons are attached, zippers go up, down AND lock, drawstrings are intact and seams aren’t ripped. Review hems, sleeves, collars and armpits for stains or holes.
  • Inspect baby gear for loose screws, chipped paint, missing pieces. Use your smartphone to check recall lists or reviews.
  • Know your budget.
  • Be comfortable. Shopping can be hard work especially when you are hauling piles of clothing around. Leave the heavy handbag and coat at home.

The last time I hit the big JBF Consignment Sale in fall I was able to get most of my daughter’s winter wardrobe plus shoes, coats for her and Shaun and some fun stuff for way less than $200. I can’t wait for the spring event coming up in  a few weeks.

These tips aren’t just for shopping kids clothes.  Use the same guidelines when shopping for adults and household items.

So when I was introduced to Swapdom I was intrigued. Swapdom intends to make trading clothing and accessories easier between groups of people.

At Swapdom, we connect Megan to Alex to Doris and circle back to Megan, so everyone gets what they want.

All you have to do is tell us what you’d offer for your requested item and ship it off once we find a swap.

With Swapdom you search among the uploaded images and find what appeals to you. Shop for what you like and then offer items you want to let go of. Swapdom then works behind the scenes to match up the offers and requests and in the end you wind up with something new to you to relove.

Right now I have 8-10 items uploaded that I cleaned out from my closet. Some of them I’ve never worn, worn a couple of times and some I just won’t wear anymore. Everything is in great condition. Swapdom isn’t just for me though. They’ve recently started a kid’s swap section too.This section lets you purge your child’s closet of outgrown items in search for something new.

The swap process isn’t quick though. It could take at least 10 days to find that just right circle of swaps. Be patient, keep your items uploaded and offered, you aren’t using them anyway right.

Shopping for Shae is really fun these days. She’s old enough to pull of fun trends and designs but still young enough that we can go bright with the colors and exaggerated with the details. Osh Kosh has been a shopping staple since Sabreena was little, that’s where her first pair of overalls came from. I try to shop with purpose. I hate coming home with seperates that don’t have a match or unusual items that end up sitting in the closet or drawer.  I like to get an inventory of what my kids need in advance.  This was simple for Shae since I still handle her clothes. I knew what she needed. This doesn’t always help m e shop easier.  I stepped into my local Osh Kosh store and was blown away by the selection for Shae’s size. I tend to find some stores focus on the baby to preschool age but Osh Kosh had her sizes in almost everything I picked up.  Even their clearance section had lots to choose from.
