Camp Invention more than just Summer Camp #Giveaway

As a working parent the looming summer is bearing a heavy burden on my shoulders.  We’re set up with the pool membership, my mother has retired and plans on doing activities with the kids, my oldest is changing her work schedule so she can have more fun this summer instead of working all day.

But what about the dreaded “brain drain”. In my opinion summer should be fun.  Not full of assignments and reports but there also has to be some stimulation of the mind that DOESN’T come from video games. This is where Summer Camp comes in.  Camps give kids a bit of structure in the middle of summer chaos.  The schedule and organization is reminiscent of school but definitely with MORE fun and creativity involved.Camp Invention Summer Day Camp STEM learning

This year marks the 25th Anniversary of Camp Invention, the nation’s premier summer enrichment day camp with a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) with hands on activities.  These young minds are exposed to innovative giants such as  National Inventors Hall of Fame (NIHF) Inductees, United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) representatives and high-profile educators. Each year embarks on a new adventure and program. Camp Invention Summer Day Camp STEM learning

For 2015 Camp Invention brings to its campers “Illuminate”.  This year’s program will encourage students to explore their inventiveness through an innovation laboratory, investigation of circuits and taking on a nature-inspired design challenge. As they build and make discoveries, they will have a chance to invent a prototype from scratch and explore math from a new angle when they create origami flight models during team-building exercises.Camp Invention Summer Day Camp STEM learning #Giveaway

This year Shae will be a camper and Shaun will be a counselor in training with Camp Invention/Invention Project. This will be their first experience with summer camp and its gonna be amazing.

I want your child to have an amazing summer too!  We’re giving away a camp registration for a local chapter of Camp Invention in your community.

This year The Illuminate curriculum features five energetic and fun-filled modules that include:

  • Inducted – this module will introduce your child to innovation role models and give them a first-hand account of what it takes to make their mark on the world and get into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
  • Design Studio – Children will be empowered to explore their creativity in our innovation laboratory, where they can design their own invention, investigate circuits or take on a nature-inspired design challenge.
  • I Can Invent: Next Level Gamers – No matter if your child is an avid video gamer or plays occasionally, they will love the opportunity to help the Camp Invention Gaming Labs come up with the next must-have video game called MazeWorld.
  • KartWheel – Future engineers will love the opportunity to create a freestyle race kart that can withstand water and navigate the ultimate wet terrain obstacle course – all while designing in the outdoors and getting some exercise.
  • M.O.V.E.: Motion, obstacles, variety, excitement – Our campers are movers and shakers and we want to encourage them to use that momentum in our kinesthetic learning module! Participants will use their imagination as they reach for the stars and get in motion, overcome obstacles, make variations to classic games and build excitement during this activity!

Are you excited?  Enter today by telling me WHY this type of camp would benefit your child.

Coconut Lime Chex Mix #Recipe for Spring

Do you know how happy I am to finally see bright blue skies and green grass. Hopefully we won’t see another flake of snow till next winter and the freezing temperatures are gone for good.

It’s spring time.  That means time spent outside, grilling, sitting around the bonfire, enjoying fresher and tastier food and drinks and enjoying the new season.  With these changes come new attitudes and cravings.  I picked up a bag of limes from the farmers market and knew they were just the right thing to get everyone else into the same spirit as me.

Margaritas are always a hit for movie night but I wanted to shake things up a bit by switching out our typically snacks with something more refreshing.  This is where my Coconut Lime Chex Mix happened.Coconut Lime Chex Mix Recipe for Spring

Coconut Lime Chex Mix Recipe for Spring

A little imagination is all that was needed to make this fun and scrumptious treat. I always keep a good supply of ingredients on hand just for these special occasions.

The beauty of Chex Mix is the ability to create your own flavor combination.  Put your favorite tastes together for a delicious sweet or savory snack or even dessert. Coconut Lime Chex Mix Recipe for Spring

Coconut Lime Chex Mix Recipe for Spring

Coconut Lime Chex Mix

Ingredients

  • 6-8 cups Chex Cereal of your choice
  • 3-4 cups air-popped popcorn
  • 1 cup white chocolate chips or vanilla candy melts
  • 4 tbls coconut oil or butter
  • 1-2 tsp fresh lime juice
  • 1  1/2 cups coconut flakes
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1-2 tsp fresh lime zest

Directions

In a VERY large or 2 large plastic zipper closure bags add the cereal and popcorn mixture. In a microwaveable bowl or measuring cup melt the butter and chocolate chips till smooth and pourable.  Add the lime juice and immediately pour over the cereal.  Stir, shake and move till it coats as much of the mix as possible.

Add the coconut, sugar and lime zest and give the mixture another good shake or stir.

Let cool, add to large bowl and enjoy.Coconut Lime Chex Mix Recipe for Spring

The white chocolate gives it a little extra sweetness but it can be skipped.  I’d add a touch of vanilla to the melted butter though.

This is making another appearance for our upcoming girls night in as well as Easter dinner.  Come up with your own Chex Mix creations just by adding a little bit of this and little but of that.

What do you think you can come up with if you were given $50 to shop with? A lucky LookWhatMomFound…and Dad too! reader will receive one just by simply telling me your favorite flavor combination of Chex Mix either already created or floating around in your creative mind.

Being a Working Parent Can Be Tough

Disclosure: This post is brought to you by Mott’s and The Motherhood. All opinions are my own.

Being a working household with two kids in school and one in sports means a lot of juggling, shifting and last minute plan changes which sometimes makes me feel like a bad dad but after reading the Mott’s Good & Honest campaign I now know I am not alone.

Melinda and I always have the best intentions in mind when it comes to the kids but sometimes life takes over and throws a total monkey wrench in or day to day lives and plans. For instance Shaun plays lacrosse and has practice on Tuesday and Thursday at 6pm and our oldest daughter works until 8pm so Melinda and I need to juggle who is dropping off and picking up Shaun from practice and who is going to get the oldest from work.  So this means that dinner might be cereal, eggs, fruit, or something fast that can be taken on the go like Mott’s fruit punch rush or Mott’s strawberry applesauce which the kids love.  For years Melinda and I would feel like terrible parents if we let our kids have cereal or something fast for dinner but these days we are just happy if the kids get a chance to eat dinner due to the busy scheduling.

IMG_0297

We try to sit down as a family for dinner but like I said it’s hard being a working family with kids in sports.  I feel like on days when there aren’t sports there is something else going on like a deadline at work for Melinda or a heavy delivery day at work for me as I am a UPS driver.  Then the weekends come and it’s tournament time for lacrosse so we are always on the go or at least it seems like we are.

We as parents need to realize that life isn’t always going to run smoothly but as we can do is the best that we can.  Trust me when our kids grow up I know they are going to look back on life and realize that their childhood was busy and that is was sometimes crazy hectic but the one thing that I hope that they always remember is that Melinda and I did everything in our power to do the best that we could for our kids.

What to Watch in 2015 Netflix #StreamTeam

The New Year is here and I’m so excited for all of the new things that Netflix has coming out next year. Orange is the New Black Season 3 is coming some time in mid 2015. Hopefully the next seasons of Archer and Bobs Burgers will be out soon too. I know my sister is excited about the new show, All Hail King Julien, which is all about the King of the Lemurs from Madagascar. All Hail King Julien Netflix #StreamTeam

There have been tons of great movies and shows on Netflix this year. We can expect new seasons of many of these next year so everyone needs to get caught up soon. These are the 15 shows and movies I think everyone should watch in 2015.What to Watch in 2015 on NetFlix, Movies, Shows and Cartoons #StreamTeam
Shows
1. Parks and Recreation
My all time favorite show. With 6 seasons to go through, there is plenty to catch up on. This is a perfect show if you love binge watching and laughing and Chris Pratt.
2. Orange is the New Black
An amazing look into a women’s prison based on an autobiography. Every character is developed and interesting and bring their own zest to the story. The best part for me is looking into the histories of the inmates and learning how their lives lead them to prison.
3. Criminal Minds
The best crime show ever made. Look into the minds of serial killers and learn way too much about the psychology behind murder. There are a ton of episodes to keep you occupied for weeks.
4. Walking Dead
Because it’s currently on TV, Netflix isn’t caught up completely but there are still 4 full season to watch. It’s got zombies and excellent characters and an elaborate story, all of which make it a great show. There are four seasons to go through and the new one is usually added some time in the fall.
5. The Killing
This show was originally on television but was canceled before it was finished. Netflix picked it up for the last season and gave us an incredible finale. It’s a crime thriller with tons of suspense but every seasons finale is incredible. This is a show I would highly recommend.

Cartoons
6. Archer
A weird concept with great execution; Archer follows a team of spies as they go on secret missions and also while they deal with dumb interpersonal conflicts. It’s funny and really weird and everyone should give it a try. It might not be everyone’s sense of humor but it could take some of you by surprise.
7. Bobs Burgers
This follows a family running a burger restaurant deal with low income and all of the other curves life can throw at you in a hilarious way. It shows events that are possible in real life but unlikely to actually happen to any sane person. They’re hilarious and strange but it’s an adorable show that anyone can laugh at.
8. Courage the Cowardly Dog
This is an older show from when I was a kid. It’s really bizarre but for me it’s a classic. It’s also more for older kids because it can be a tad scary and disturbing at times.
9. The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy
Another cartoon from my childhood. The saddest thing to me is that all of the episodes aren’t on Netflix but I’ll take what I can get. This show is the definition of weird. The episodes don’t go in order and they don’t follow any kind of logic. It’s a show about two kids who force the Grim Reaper to be their best friend forever and they meet all kinds of paranormal and supernatural creatures including a giant spider that thinks Billy is his dad and Count Dracula in his later years. Just watch it, I can’t explain it.
10. Adventure Time
Your kids probably already watch this show. I did even before Netflix and I have a few seasons on DVD. It’s adorable and fable-esqe with each episode teaching a lesson. But it also a lot of fun with adventures and monsters and a little bit of romance. This is a show mom and dad would approve of their kids watching. It also has a deep backstory which only the older viewers would be able to comprehend.

Movies
11. Silver Linings Playbook
It was Oscar nominated so you know it’s great but I didn’t hear a ton of buzz about it when it was in theaters. Even if you’ve already seen it, watch it again, it’s a great movie about family and mental illness and how the two are related. And Jennifer Lawrence is in it and she’s adorable.
12. Django Unchained
Not quite the same scope as the other movies on this list. It’s a Quentin Tarantino movie so it’s crazy violent but it’s also incredibly funny. It’s an all around great film that’s a lot of fun for mom and dad. Definitely make sure the kids are gone when you turn this one on though.
13. Annie
Watch the original on Netflix and then go see the reboot in theaters. Both are terrific in their own ways and Annie is a great introduction to the world of musicals and theater for young kids.
14. Camp Takota
It’s indie, it’s adorable, it’s all about friendship. It’s just a cute story about a girl who gets cheated on so she heads back to her childhood camp for the summer; you know a classic storyline. But it is a lot of fun.
15. What Maisie Knew
My mom and I watched it together and we didn’t know anything about it going into it but it turned out to be incredible. It’s so sweet to follow this little girl through her life and her parents dysfunctional life and separation, remarriage and more. But it ends in a great (but odd) way and I enjoyed every minute of it.

You don’t have Netflix? Let us change that for you. We have a 1 year subscription to giveaway to a LookWhatMomFound…and Dad too! reader. Let us know what you’re looking forward to watching just from the list above.

Old Spice Re-Fresh for the Tween & Giveaway

I’ve realized something recently.  As I watched my son grow up I missed seeing him actually “grow up”.  When I look at him I see a kid, a kid that makes messes, talks back sometimes, leaves his sneakers all over the garage and forgets his lunch at home. What I’ve been missing is the young man he’s becoming. I missed his growth spurt so now he’s taller than his mom. I missed the blossoming relationship between him and his older sister. I missed the way his grandfather looks at him with pride and love being the only grandson.Old Spice Holiday #SmellcometoManhood Kit #giveaway

Shaun is definitely approaching manhood no matter how much I don’t want to see it.

Old Spice is recognizing this very important part of life and is launching Re-Fresh technology.  This means no more need to spray over and over. This means Old Spice Re-Fresh lasts all day with one spray.  With the introduction of “Dadsong” it’s dad’s turn to tell his side of the story with another humorous, over-the-top song from Old Spice.

For the parent of a tween boy who is at the stage of sweaty/smelly/put up a fight to take a shower I’m happy to have a tool to help teach him a lesson in body hygiene.

If I can get him to take 5 steps in a day I’ve suceeded as a dad.

Take a Shower
Apply Old Spice All in One Body Wash
Use Deodorant
Spray Re-Fresh in the Morning
Brush Teeth

It sounds like a lot to do for a boy concerned with nothing but video games and snacks. Each step is simple and I think by showing him how these are steps to take into manhood his vanity (because he spends time on his hair and picking out the right sneakers) will kick in and he’s be back to a great smelling kid.

During this time we also play holiday movies in the background. We don’t do heartwarming or old fashioned we go right for funny as the movies the kids choose are usually a mix of Elf, National Lampoons Christmas Vacation or The Grinch starring Jim Carry. This means we’re laughing and reciting lines as we’re decorating. This means the kids are re-enacting absurd scenes from some of their favorite movies. This means we’re enjoying the time we’re spending together.

This year will be no different. We’ll do what we always do but we’ll be able to add a fun new ornament to the mix. Hallmark has sent us a has sent us a keepsake to fit right into our traditions, The Grinch’s Heart Grew Three Sizes.Hallmark #KeepsakeIt Ornament Giveaway

Jord Wood Watch Recap and Giveaway

While I wouldn’t classify Rob as a trendy or fashionable man he does enjoy his little luxuries. Sneakers, watches and tattoos is where he spends his money. Everything else in his life is pretty simple; jeans and a sweater for a nice dinner, shaved head instead of weekly haircuts and locally crafted beer instead of pricey wine lists .  I honestly don’t know if I could deal with a man that needed to iron his shirts or “do” his hair.

When we were on our cruise this summer Rob was eyeing a wood watch at a Caribbean jewelry store. I was in another store trying to convince myself to buy a HUGE blue topaz pendant so I didn’t get a good look at the watch he wanted. We both left empty-handed.  Fast forward a couple months and Rob got his wood watch. It was a surprise for him that he really loves.

Jord Watches are handcrafted timepieces made with sustainable materials from all over the world. Jord watches are designed to take people back to nature, away from the metal, plastic and rubber that we’re all used to. A wood watch is not just an accessory to tell time it’s a fashion statement that outdoes the terrible trends happening  each day. These watches are meant for those individuals who are looking for something new, something different.

Rob is wearing the Sully. Our Sully series marries complimentary and contrasting woods giving a vivid and varied tonal effect that can only be achieved when constructing a wood timepiece. The large face numbers and cut out bezel add playfulness to an otherwise classically styled timepiece. This is not just a men’s watch. I’m realizing after trying this on that I’d love something this unique to wear for myself. In fact I’ve been looking at a few designs for myself.Women's Wood Watch Holiday Gift Guide #jordwatch #giveaway
