Salted Caramel Monkey Bread #recipe #streamteam

Breakfast is the most important meal of my day. I love having something special and delicious first thing in the morning like chocolate chip waffles or Nutella and banana pancakes. Basically I just like having chocolate and candy for breakfast. One of my favorite special breakfasts to have is monkey bread. Its essentially just biscuits cut up and covered in caramel sauce but it’s one of the most delicious things you can have. One morning this week, I decided to make it for my family. There are so few ingredients you can almost always whip some monkey bread up in the morning. This recipe is adapted from Andrea Lynn, Salted Caramel Monkey Bread.Salted Caramel Monkey Bread #recipe #streamteam

For the caramel:

  • ¾ cup packed brown sugar
  • ½ stick (1/4 cup) unsalted butter
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt, not-optional

For the monkey bread:

1 cup granulated sugar

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

3 cans (4.5-ounce) Pillsbury buttermilk biscuits

1 cup chopped pecans (optional)

1/3 cup melted butter

I had to run to the store in the morning to get heavy cream and biscuit dough but everything else was right there in my cabinets. There are two main steps to making monkey bread, coating the biscuit pieces and making the caramel. I cut up the biscuit dough into small chunks and shook them in a mixture of white sugar and a little cinnamon. I put them in a greased bundt pan and sprinkled a little bit of the leftover sugar on top. I also added some chopped pecans for extra goodness. Salted Caramel Monkey Bread #recipe #streamteam

In a saucepan, I mixed a 1/4 cup of butter and 3/4 cup of brown sugar and 1/4 cup of heavy cream together. Then I added a good shake of sea salt and poured the caramel sauce over the biscuits. Then I baked it at 350 for 40 minutes until the biscuits were totally cooked.

Before it cools off, you have to flip the bread out on to a plate. The caramel will have melted and pooled at the bottom and will run down the sides of the bread and harden. It looks so delicious and tastes just as good. Just wait for it to cool down a bit and pull out chunks and enjoy.Salted Caramel Monkey Bread #recipe #streamteam Salted Caramel Monkey Bread #recipe #streamteam

With our monkey bread in our laps, Shae and I cuddled up on the sofa and watched some My Little Pony, one of her favorite shows on Netflix. (and maybe one of the cutest cartoons ever.) I already miss spending time with her now that she’s away at school. But we will always have great cartoons to watch together.Netflix Stream Team

Goop A Lesson in Quicksand #StreamTeam

While showing Shae The Princess Bride for the first time this week, the three of us (kids) got into a discussion about what quicksand is and how it works after watching the scene when Buttercup sinks into the lightning sand. With the Netflix theme for this month being all about staying engaged during the summer, Shae and I decided to do a little experiment.
Goop, a Lesson in QuicksandThe next morning we set out to discover the science behind quicksand. I gathered the necessary supplies; cornstarch, water, a large bowl, some food coloring for extra fun and an array of victims.goop supplies
We decided to move outside because this is a notoriously messy experiment. Shae helped me pour the two main ingredients into the larger bowl but we quickly realized that there wasn’t nearly enough quicksand for a good experiment. What started out as a carefully measured experiment soon became me dumping a ton of cornstarch into a bowl and adding water in a splash at a time until we decided it was perfect. Adding the food coloring was a lot more difficult than I thought because the goo was so thick. I suggest that you add it to the water before you pour it in to guarantee even mixing.

Then we began subjecting our victims to the quicksand. First we killed the dinosaurs, then we sent a diver in to save them. We galloped some horses across the surface and then watched them slowly sink like that scene in A Neverending Story. I had Shae punch the surface and feel how oddly solid it was. We rolled the goo into balls and then watched them melt on the table.goop sinking
I’m not entirely sure if Shae learned anything but it sure was a lot of fun. Cleaning up was a pain because Shae was covered up to her elbows in caked cornstarch.

Recharging this Summer with Netflix #StreamTeam

I’m so happy to be done with school and to have plenty of time this summer to watch Netflix. Yes, watching television is one of my favorite things to do. My last day of school was on May 23rd but my brother and sister didn’t finish school until June 10th so that meant I had plenty of free time. I tend to be their source of entertainment and amusement so I kinda had a vacation from them for a while.

I used most of this free time to marathon all of my favorite old shows. Since I’m only 18, shows that are old to me are shows that only came out in the early-2000s. But these are still the tv shows that I remember watching when I was in middle school. I’ve rewatched all of Numb3rs and well as Law and Order: SVU, two shows that my mom and I watched together and loved. Numb3rs was easily my favorite show in 8th grade; I remember watching reruns all afternoon during the summer.Watching Numb3rs on Netflix #StreamTeam

I haven’t just been rewatching shows, I’ve also used this time to watch shows that I’ve always wanted to try but haven’t had the time. Parks and Recreation is becoming one of my new favorite shows. I’ve fallen for the entire cast and it never fails to make me laugh out loud. Archer is another new show that I marathoned through. As a huge fan of Bob’s Burgers, I wanted to see if H. Jon Benjamin’s other show was as hilarious to me as the Bob’s Burgers is.

I’m glad to have Netflix this summer so that I can laze around and watch tv all day. It’s really the only way that I’d like to spend my summer.

A Month of Musicals on Netflix #StreamTeam

Musicals are my favorite kinds of movies! I love live action movies based off of broadway hits like RENT, Chicago, or Annie but I also love watching children’s musicals. We made May a month of musicals in our home as part of the Netflix #StreamTeam.Musicals on Netflix #StreamTeam

Disney movies or something like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, a movie that we all watched as a family just a few weeks ago. I even have Frozen Radio saved as a favorite station on iTunes Radio. It plays the songs from all of the Disney movies, even the really obscure ones. Did you know there are French loves songs on the Wall-E soundtrack? I love reminiscing about movies that I haven’t seen since I owned them on VHS.

Netflix has recently put on so many of the old Disney musicals that I love. I noticed a few months ago that Grease and Rent had both been added to the list and I watched them both in a weekend. I can’t wait to see what other shows get put into the stream; I love forcing my little sister to watch them with me. I hope that she will learn to love them as much as I do with enough coaxing. She’s pretty amazing when it comes to memorizing songs, I don’t know if there’s a song on the radio that she doesn’t know how to sing. She and I love to sing our favorite Disney songs together too. Recently she’s been pretty partial to Frozen which I like but the songs can get pretty repetitive. I think we will try to watch something old to me but new to her, like Pocahontas, so she has something new to sing.Netflix Stream Team

Taking it Old School for the Family #NetFlix #StreamTeam

One of my favorite things to do with Shae is to watch all of the old Disney movies that I used to have on VHS. Recently, Netflix has added things like Mulan, Robin Hood, Hercules, The Aristocats, and Pocahontas to instant streaming. As part of the Netflix #StreamTeam we get announcements of new (and old) programming that’s been added.Watching Dumbo #StreamTeam #NetFlixKids

This month they’re taking it old school with shows there were more my mom’s era. I’ve heard her get all excited about Jem and the Holigrams. My grandfather’s been known to watch Saved By the Bell marathons on Saturday mornings when everyone else is sleeping.

I’m an obscure Disney movie lover. I’m so excited to find the titles that no one else mentions, those are my favorites, those are the ones I grew up with. Now I can share that with Shae and show her that Disney isn’t always princesses and fairy tales.#NetFlix #StreamTeam Classic Television and Movies

Fabulous Ice Age #NetFlixKids

2014 disclosure

The Pairs Ice Dancing Competition is my favorite event in the Olympics. I find the chemistry between the couples beautiful and I am always blown away by the amazing jumps and lifts that they are able to perform all while sliding around on thin blades across ice. The way that the two can travel side by side at such a great speed and then the man lifts her and continues with the woman hoisted over his head all while keeping his balance is astounding. The trust that the woman must have in her partner to allow herself to be tossed into the air and spun around never fails to amaze me. They both posses such power and grace and they move so perfectly together; it’s breath-taking.

The Fabulous Ice Age took me back to the very first ice shows in 1930s night clubs and the ice dancer turned movie star Sonja Henie, up to the modern day Disney On Ice performances.

Fabulous Ice Age #netflixkidsThere was so much wonderful old footage of people with so much joy for what they were doing; I was thrilled. All of those people who spent their lives watching these wonderful shows and collecting props and costumes and memorabilia have such a passion for the sport. I don’t blame them. I love seeing the ice shows that Disney puts on. As soon as they began to talk about the start of the Disney shows, I began to remember all of the wonderful times that I’ve had with my family at those performances. They’re so much fun; getting to see my favorite characters and hear the songs from my favorite movies but all performed on ice. It was sad to hear that the old shows had to end for Disney to begin but a whole new era of Americans got to enjoy ice skating the way people did in the 1930s.
