Mamas & Papas hits the USA

I started this blog as a way to share cool things for kids and families. The quintessential baby item has come up for review; the stroller. Not just any stroller though; the Mamas & Papas Sola Pushchair from Britain’s #1 luxury stroller brand.

mamas and papas sola stroller

I received this stroller smack in the middle of winter, a very snowy and cold winter. Only until a couple weeks back did I get a chance to really test it out in the streets. It plowed over curbs and cracks with little effort partly due to its lightweight frame. This particular model is considered a compact model, aside from weight there was nothing small about it. The frame had a wide stable stance and the seat was definitely big for kids up to preschooler age. Even when it was folded this stroller took up a lot of space. This was 1 of its few drawbacks. When it’s folded it doesn’t stand on it own, it requires a large footprint of trunk or garage floor space to store.

A couple things I didn’t talk about were the adjustable footrest. This feature I find good for when your child is a little older and is sleeping reclined, hanging feet can be uncomfortable. There is an optional carrycot that switches places with the stroller seat that acts as a bassinet. If you get the chance to walk more and drive less this would be a great accessory to have for the littlest babies.

The Sola Pushchair also doubles as an infant stoller. Similar to the Snap ‘n Go there is an option to attach select infant carseat carriers to the Sola frame with an available bracket system. This piece is separate and at a cost of approximately $60.

Like most European styled strollers you’ll find very few bells and whistles. Things like cup holders, snack trays and umbrella holders (yea, I had one of those before) aren’t included in the sleek and modern designs. Included with the Sola is the stroller bar and a raincover but everything else comes at an extra price.
I loved the Sola Pushchair. It had a great look, great glide and great features. Like I said, I’m past the baby stage so this stroller found a nice home with my sister in law and her soon to be born little boy Carter. I’ll at least get to visit.

(my apologies for an erratic video, it’s quite hard to do with a kid in the same room)

New Skate Shoes from Heelys

Helmet. Check! Knee pads. Check! Elbow pads. Check! Health Insurance. Check! We’ve got our bases covered so now Shaun can finally enjoy his Heelys skate shoes. He’s been asking for these for YEARS but I’ve always said no, saying he was too young, too careless, too accident prone. Honestly though nothing has changed but I thought it was time for me to stop being such a downer so I gave in.

Shaun received Heelys Double Threat shoes. These shoes are made to be low profile, comfortable and most of all FUN.

Heelys became a phenomenon a couple years ago but I hated them. Kids rolling around in stores, malls, hallways and sidewalks not paying any attention others; I just wanted to trip them. I’ve cheered up a little and blamed the bad behavior on the parents. Shaun won’t be allowed to wear them anywhere but outside.

I realize now that Heelys can be really great for outdoor activities and having fun. Shaun can head to the dog park with my parents and get pulled along by the poodles. Recently Heelys introduced the new Nano; a patented shoe bracket to give wearers a skateboard feel and look.

This option gives wearers the ability to skate faster, longer and farther than with just the traditional one-wheeled Heely.

Healthier Winter with GermGuardian

The dry winter air wrecks havoc on my family. The kids wake up with chapped cheeks and cracked lips and cough that produce nothing. Recently Rob and I have been waking up with dry scratchy throats no amount of water can soothe. For years the kids have slept with humidifiers to ease the weather induced sawdust air and keep the sickness away. Usually Rob and I just suffered through it, until now.

Germ Guardian sent us their 55-Hour Ultrasonic Humidifier to review. Since the kids already have similar quality humidifiers in their rooms we thought it would benefit us to try it for US. To start off Rob liked that there was no added cost involved for filters or silver sticks. Both brands we currently use both require one if not both replacement parts throughout a season. The variable mist controls lets us adjust the humidity level in our room. This is good since we keep it directly next to the bed, it doesn’t have to be cranked up high.

The warm and cool mist option is perfect for a nursery. That croupy barky cough that many children get during the winter responds really well with a cool mist humidifier; it helps to alleviate bronchial swelling.

I’ve been waking up with less dryness in my sinuses and throat; so it’s working. Rob has noticed an improvement in his sleep also. Invest in a Germ Guardian ultrasonic humidifier for the winter, your body will thank you.

Waiting For Superman Recap

Recently Melinda and I received a Blu Ray copy of Waiting for Superman for overview.  I was excited because this was a movie I wanted to see for a long time but just never got around to it. I’m glad I did.

Waiting for Superman is a movie showing us just how messed up our education system is and how hard it is for children to get a good education.  It shows how good teachers run into the system which holds them back from being the best they can be while bad teachers are protected by the system.

One of the sad things about Waiting for Superman was the lottery system.  This happens when kids want to go to a better school but there are not enough spots for the number of applicants that have applied.   The crazy thing is you see this happening all over the US.  When we first moved to Delaware we wanted to get Sabreena into a program at her high school called the Cambridge Program.  It is a two year program for honor level students that you need to apply to via an application that contains essay questions.  Your grades are also taken into consideration.  Sabreena her whole life has been a straight A student so we figured she would get in with no problems but we were very wrong.  Sabreena was not accepted and it had nothing to do with her grades it had to do with available spots.  It’s ashame that students need to compete to get a good quality education but unfortunately that is how our school systems work.

Filmmaker Davis Guggenheim reminds us that education “statistics” have names: Anthony, Francisco, Bianca, Daisy, and Emily, whose stories make up the engrossing foundation of WAITING FOR SUPERMAN.

If you want a real look into America’s school system watch Wating for Superman.  It’s a real eye opener.

Get $25 from PASS from American Express

She’s spending more time with friends shopping, eating, hanging out on Main Street. She’s got her phone, her iPod and now her own PASS Card from American ExpressSM. All she needs is her license and car and she won’t need Mommy and Daddy anymore; that is until she runs out of money on her PASS Card.

The PASS Card is PREPAID reloadable “credit” card. It’s safer than cash, convenient to monitor, easy to add funds and risk-free of overdraft. The program is geared to teens and young adults as a way to teach financial responsibility. We can send our kids to the mall or movies with a little peace of mind that they will only spend a certain dollar amount. This can teach them how to balance shopping for the things they need versus they things they want, shopping on price rather than just fashion and how to track how much money is spent on things like their half caf grande soy vanilla chai skinny latte no foam habit.

What I like best about this program is the no-chance-of-losing-the-money-I-just-handed-you concept. Sabreena is a great student, super sweet, responsible, caring and smart. That being said she’s sometimes a bit scatter-brained. This lets me hand her the card and know it’s safe if she drops it, leaves it in another pair jeans or worse, leaves it at a store. If the PASS is lost or stolen the cardholder isn’t responsible for fraudulent charges AND AMEX will replace the funds.

Find out for yourself the convenience and ease of the PASS card by signing up for yourself. If you do before April 25th you’ll receive and an additional FREE $25 by using code SS25 when you order a $25 card. Start your kids off on the right financial foot. Start talking budgets, limits and responsibility with them today so they make smart decisions in the future.

Bambi is coming out of the vault, March 1, 2011!  The Diamond Edition debut of BAMBI, Walt’s fifth full-length animated classic, is a heartwarming story about a young deer that quickly learns the lessons of life: love, friendship, loss and heartbreak.

It’s been many years since watching Bambi, in fact I don’t think I even remember the entire story.  This is going to be a Friday movie night pick with the kids. We are slowly replacing all of our DVDs with the Blu-Ray/DVD combos.  The Disney classics are the 1st on the list and I’m excited to introduce Bambi to the kids. Shop for yourself with this $10 off coupon.

The new BAMBI Diamond Edition will be available as a 2-Disc Disney Combo Pack, a High Definition Movie Download and a Standard Definition Movie Download. For those wanting it in standard definition DVD version you’ll have to wait until April 19, 2011. Disney’s new “Second Screen” technology, which is being introduced for the very first time on the BAMBI Diamond Edition release, will further transform the at-home movie watching experience by empowering viewers with the ability to engage with film content on multiple media platforms and bring them to life in their own hands at the touch of a button

For those getting the 2-Disc Combo Pack you’ll have access to fun games and activities as well as never before seen deleted scenes and a song; Twitterpated.  Bambi is 69 years old, it was intended to be Disney’s second full-length animated film after “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” but took 6 years to complete. It is one of Disney’s most beloved classics and its shelf life is limited so get it now before it gets locked up again.

Rain Boots go with Everything

Dress up and imagination play are the biggest parts of Shae’s daily play time. When it’s time to leave the house it isn’t always convenient or appropriate to take that with us. Kidorable now lets her bring her newest stories along for the ride.

The Fairy Collection is adorable and perfectly girly and sweet. With a foot of snow on the ground Shae is wearing her rain boots with confidence that her feet won’t get wet. The bright yellow, pink and green colors match almost everything she wears; not that being mismatched would stop her anyway. The matching umbrella has the cutest fairy wings on top and is a perfect bell shape to keep her dry. Toddlers aren’t the best at handling umbrellas but its lightweight design helps keep it upright with ease.

Shop Kidorable for any and every kid you know. Styles range from fireman to mermaid to space hero to ballerina. Don’t think the selection stops at raingear either. Kidorable now has winter gear, bath accessories, room décor and more available. We’ve been shopping Kidorable since Shaun was little and have always been very pleased with their quality, fun styles and of course all the great comments and smiles we get out and about all dressed up.

Secretariat-more than just a story about a horse

A movie that can make a grown man cry is a keeper in my book. Secretariat is the story of the Triple Crown winner horse and the struggles and sacrifices his owner, handler, caretaker and jockey had to go through to get him to that final finish line.

I honestly didn’t have high hopes for this film. I didn’t think it was going to be as interesting as the previews and reviews claimed it was. Horses are beautiful but I’m not a horse racing kinda person. It started slow but indeed tugged at the heartstrings and gave you a glimpse into the owner’s motivation and love for the gentle giant. At the end of the film Rob was teary and I knew this was a movie that was going to hold a special place in our growing DVD collection. Not what I expected; this movie completely surprised us.

Behind every legend, lies an impossible dream. Witness the spectacular journey of an incredible horse named Secretariat and the moving story of his unlikely owner, a housewife who risked everything to make him a champion. Out of the gate with never-before-seen bonus features, Secretariat is hours of pulse- pounding entertainment for the whole family!

Secretariat was released January 25, 2010 on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD & Movie Download.
