I’m strangely obsessed with button crafts lately. It’s weird I know but I think they are adorable and fun and pretty. Shae and I even did a button craft earlier this week (post coming soon).

Here are some of my favorite button “pins” I’ve found lately.

Digital Artistry with Nomad Brushes

I am very far from being any kind of artist. I’m more of what one would call a crafter. Sabreena on the other hand is the artist and every year we head to the supply stores to stock up on basics and other “ingredients” for projects. Artistry isn’t a very mobile hobby though. What happens when inspiration strikes in the car or visiting the grandparents?

With all the mobile devices at our fingertips Sabreena can virtual draw anytime she wants. The Nomad brushes we recently received went right to Sabreena and she’s been “painting” ever since.

Nomad Brushes were invented by artist Don Lee. After receiving an iPad as a gift and delving right into his digital scrapbook he knew something was needed. The feel of his finger rubbing across a glass screen wasn’t right. He searched for that just right tool but never found it. The Nomad Brush is his gift to the world of digital artistry. There is nothing mechanical about the brush it all about giving the user a more authentic feel while creating. An addition to the Long and Short bristle brushes is a Mini; perfect for smart phones/iPods.

The Nomad Brush is perfect for almost any touchscreen device such as iPad, iPod, Android phones and Galaxy tablets. The brushes require no care except keep them in good condition, do not flatten or crush bristles. A cover or cap would’ve been a great addition so the brush can be tossed into a purse or bag along with the device.

Three (3) LookWhatMomFound.and Dad too! readers will win a Nomad Brush. Tell me what device and APP you use for digital sketching, drawing or painting.

It’s Dad’s Day, Craftsman Tool Giveaway

How long is your Honey-Do list? You know that list that is tacked on the fridge of fix-its and other projects that need to be done around the house. On my list is; hang a picture, vacuum out the air vents near the ceiling, power wash the deck and refinish our end tables. Not a long list but a list of things that neither I nor Rob want to work on.

tool-set-searsThese lists go away much faster when there is a skilled someone handling the projects. Rob is our handy-man by default. But you know when I told him he was getting a 255-piece Craftsman Mechanic’s Tool Set for review he was more than excited. He knows that in order for the job to get done RIGHT the correct tools are needed. He also knows that Craftsman is a name to trust.

With Craftsman you get:

  • Lifetime Warranty on all hand tools

Make Your Own Crafting Kit

Thanks to a kick in the pants from GummyLump’s #300CraftsforKids project Shae and I have been doing so many crafts lately.

#300CraftsforKids

I used to be really good about crafts about a year ago since moving into this house I haven’t done many with the kids. I know it’s because we no longer have a play/craft room. All of the supplies are now kept in the garage; no one wants to go in there.

sorry for chopping off my own head, that’s what happens when I record myself 🙂

Here is the list of stuff on the bucket:

  • Sticky foam sheets
  • Colored pompoms
  • Colored pipe cleaners
  • Embroidery Floss
  • Assorted fabric flowers
  • Assorted buttons
  • Assorted beads
  • Googly eyes
  • Multi-colored stamp pad
  • Assorted stamps
  • Water colors
  • Glue & double sided tabe
  • Construction paper & cardstock
  • Sequins
  • Sticky gems
  • Colored pencils
  • Glitter Glue
  • Hole punch
  • Scissors

Remember, this won’t be everything you need for every craft but it’s a good start. In the garage I’ve started a little pile to lidded glass jars, sturdy small boxes and odd shaped containers. If I find a craft online or in a magazine that can be modified to use something I already have I can just grab something I already have. Let me know what you’ve put into your craft kit or where you found some really cool craft supplies.

Posts of the individual crafts we’ve been doing will follow soon, keep checking back.

Valentine’s Day Party-Wilton Cupcake Theme

Cookies, cakes and candies Oh My! Who doesn’t love at least one of the things I mentioned? In our house we love cupcakes. There needs to be no special occasion or special visitors to have adorable cupcakes but what a great little surprise to give to someone you love.

I’ve become a better baker over the last couple years with the help of Wilton. With an extensive selection of high quality kitchen and baking supplies and ingredients Wilton helps everyday cooks become masters in their own homes. For Shae’s 1st birthday I tackled the giant cupcake, it was so cute. I’ve worked on a few other baking projects and have been pleased with everything I’ve tried from Wilton from their baking sheets to pastry bag to decorative cupcake liners.

I recently received a special gift from Wilton; Flower Power and Teddy Bear Silicon baking cups. What I love about these is I can easily fit a dozen cups on a baking sheet and place them into the oven, no more cumbersome cupcake tins. And the cups are so cute I frost and serve the cupcakes still inside. It’s a special touch to an already special treat. The directions say that they are dishwasher safe but mine didn’t come clean that way. I used a bottle brush and everything was fine.

Wilton Enterprises offers the industry´s most comprehensive and innovative selection of baking, cake decorating, candy making, cookie making, wedding, baby, party, seasonal and kitchen products. These products are designed to make it easy for anyone to enjoy the thrill of serving something special and utilizing unique style and design while doing it.

Win a fabulously adorable cupcake gift set from Wilton right here at LookWhatMomFound…and Dad too! Visit Wilton and let me know what product you love or ALREADY love for your baking or candy making needs.

Klutz Activites Recapitulation

Summer is winding down and the kids are getting bored. They’ve plFayed and played till this isn’t anything left to play. So they are sitting in the house sofa surfing with nothing to do. Well I have stuff for them to do. Klutz creates wonderful activities, crafts, games and projects for kids ages 4 to teen. Started in 1977 by three college friends, Klutz got its beginning with sidewalk juggling lessons. With the first weeks earnings topping off at $35, John Cassidy, Darrell Lorentzen and B.C. Rimbeaux knew they could only go up from there.

Today Klutz offers a wide variety of fun things for kids within their collections Klutz Toys, Klutz Kits, Klutz Buckets and Klutz Guides. Klutz is a fixture in book stores, toys stores, book bestseller list and craft and project stores not just in the United States but throughout the world. With a hands-on approach children are able to learn while having fun working on unique projects and games. Tricky Videos, A Complete Guide to Moviemaking Magic is one of their newest additions. A how to collection of video tricks, gags and gimmicks that older kids can do with a video camera.
Here is an example of the cool tricks you can do with Tricky Video.

Sabreena is working on an Adventures in Giant Land video with the neighborhood kids. It’s been hysterical to watch and edit.

Klutz has selections for little kids too. Preschool age is a perfect time to get kids involved in crafts and building and working with their hands. Chicken Socks is a collection for ages 4-6, since most of these activites contain small parts adult supervision is strongly advised. Totally Tape is a a simple idea but one that would capture Shae’s attention in a second. Let kids go wild with colorful paper tape (no scissors required) on activity pages. Let them stick away to their hearts content.
Become a Klutz insider to received their newsletter and received 25% off your purchase. This is a great deal to stock up on cool games and activities for the holidays and cold winter months when the weather doesn’t allow for outdoor play.
Klutz wants to give a LookWhatMomFound…and Dad too! reader 2 activity books to add to their boredom buster arsenal of fun. The winner will receive Tricky Videos and a Chicken Socks selection. Please visit Klutz and tell me another product you would love to try out the kids in your life.

Sk8Grl is about More than just Clothes

Being the mom to a teenage girl I have to be conscious of the message that clothing designers send to the market. Sexy isn’t a message I read to well. I’ve found a unique alternative that fits Sabreena’s lifestyle as well as fashion needs.

Started by Holly Lyons, World Cup Skateboarding Champion, Sk8Grl.com is a premier clothing brand created for girls who love skateboarding and the lifestyle. Sk8Grl is also one of the only clothing companies working towards building self-esteem and character in our girls. A Sk8Grl is someone who loves freedom, fun and wants to positively impact her environment.

“Sk8Grl is all about inspiring and empowering girls to follow their dreams, believe in them self and know they can have fun, stay feminine, and rip on a skateboard. Through community and exposure we can make female skateboarding bigger and better”

Holly Lyons was sweet enough to answer some questions from Sabreena. Check out what they had to say.

  1. What/Who got you started skateboarding? I got into skating when I was a teenager. My sister was friends with these pro skaters, so we would go and watch them at a mini ramp at this one guys house. I thought it was so beautiful and I have never been one to just sit and watch. I started dating one of the guys and he hooked me up with a skateboard and some t-shirts.
  2. Who do you look up to in the skateboarding world? I look up to Chris Miller a lot. He owns a successful company, Planet Earth and Adio. He’s a really good person, a great husband and father. He is also the smoothest and most graceful skater I have ever seen. It’s always fun to skate with Chris.
  3. How long do you skateboard in a day? Depends, generally for a couple of hours.
  4. What injuries have you sustained? Many….I just had reconstructive surgery on my wrist, I have torn my mcl on both knees, my left knee twice. I tore my acl snowboarding and had surgery, and was also knocked out for 10 minutes and had a contusion in my brain. That was scary, my mind was skipping a lot for quite a while. I have broken bones in both hands, chronic back pain which is a lot better due to chiropractic work, yoga and exercise. I have had so many cuts, bruises and scrapes I wouldn’t know where to start It’s funny, but they were all worth it at the time and I don’t have any regrets because I learned a lot from every incident.
  5. What advice can you give to teen girls about their futures? Well, everybody is different. Skateboarding is getting bigger and better and there are so more girls skating than ever, which is so cool. I think if you love to skate then skate. If you are skating because you want to be sponsored or get free stuff then you are in it for the wrong reasons. It takes a certain kind of person to be able to withstand the injuries and keep going forward. You have to be tough because no matter who you are, you will get hurt. This also is the same with love, life, relationships or whatever. There will be the ups and the downs. Wise teachers say “It doesn’t matter what happens to you, it’s how you react to it.” When something happens it just is, it is your response that determines if something is “good” or “bad”. So, you have to skate because you just can’t image not skating. That’s how it’s been for me and trust me it’s been a colorful journey to say the least 🙂
  6. What is the future of Sk8Grl? Hopefully we will keep growing and making a positive difference for girls in skateboarding and in life. We are all about inspiring and empowering girls to believe in them self, go for it, and know they can always stay feminine and be strong! We aspire to be the ROXY of girls skateboarding and be sold worldwide. We want to have a very interactive website where girls can become friends and find out about each other, have girls design shirts and vote on the designs, then have them made and pay them a royalty. We want every girl to be part of the company itself through design projects like that and more. We want every girl to be part of the Sk8Grl world and know that their voice counts and that they can be anything they set their mind to. We want Sk8Grl to be the girls voice in skating!

If you board, ride, skate or just enjoy the lifestyle, Sk8Grl is an image you can be proud to wear. The designs are flirty, feminine, unique and stylish, something I don’t mind Sabreena wearing.

A great find-No Time For Flash Cards

I was lucky enough to have Allie of No Time For Flash Cards do an interview with me! If you’ve never visited her site you are sure missing something special.

Allie is the guru of crafting with kids. Her site shows how trouble-free doing educational and fun projects with your little ones can be with everyday supplies like paper plates, glue, crayons and recycled household things. She even has a supply list on her site and I’m proud to say I have almost everything she recommends. NTFFC isn’t just about crafts though, Allie has this wonderful gift for singing. I’m telling you all, she is a talented mama. My daughter loves to watch her video clips of familiar tunes and hand movements and dramatic expressions. As a super bonus, Allie’s handsome son has the starring role on NTFFC. At just 2 years old he shows off his creations with pride and joy. Readers you are also encouraged to submit your child’s artwork to the site.

With a wide-ranging background in Early Childhood Education, Allie has a passion for anything kid related. She has an extensive book collection, stocked craft bins and broad knowledge about children’s health and developmental growth. She is often the go-to girl on Babytalkbio.com when there is a question of what to do for a particular situation. Babytalkbio.com is where Allie and I and many other mamas have joined forces to create a supportive and creative online community. This is where Allie share’s her wealth of knowledge of all things kid along with NTFFC and now she can be found at Blissful Kids and Educatall.com as a contributor.

Now here is our interview.

When did you start documenting your crafty times with your son? What made you start documenting them online?
It all started because I missed teaching but wasn’t ready to leave my little man to go back to work. I needed an outlet and wanted to share it with other moms, teachers and care givers. I missed helping them at work too, so No Time For Flash Cards was born!Has there been any craft idea that was great in your head but the outcome wasn’t as expected?
Of course! My son does most projects with me so it’s always a surprise what they will look like. One that comes to mind though was a touch and feel duck, my son hated the feathers and refused to touch them!

What prized pieces have you kept?
In all honesty I don’t keep much; I keep everything with hand prints and any holiday decor we made.

Does your husband ever get involved in project time?
Only once so far!

Is he a creative type?
Yeah Jason is creative, but in a more logical way, he is very musical and great at building things.

What are your top 3 book recommendations for baby (ages 0-2)
Goodnight Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann
Chicka Chicka ABC by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault
Brown Bear Brown Bear by Eric Carle

preschool (ages 3-5)
Gilbert de la Frogponde : A Swamp Story by Jennifer Rae
The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
Something from Nothing by Phoebe Gilman

School age (ages 6-9)
The Westing Game – Ellen Raskin
Owls in The Family – Farley Mowat
Anne of Green Gables – Lucy Maude Montgomery

Name 1 book you read yesterday to your son.
“Din Dan Don” by Janina Domanska

Have you ever written a children’s book?
When I did my degree in Elem. Ed I focused my studies on early literacy and for that we had to write one. Mine sucked. It did, it was a terrible horrible knock off of “Alexander and The Terrible Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” by Judith Viorst.

Has it been published?
Oh no no no no. I’m surprised I got a passing grade on it.

What adult crafty things do you do?
I used to make cards, but now NTFFC takes up all my free time.

What advice can you give to parents who don’t have a creative bone in their body that want to do more with their children?
You don’t have to be creative to enrich your child’s learning at home. Grab some basic materials, like crayons, paper and glue and let them at it. I also know of a great website with tons of free ideas!
Seriously though it doesn’t matter what things look like, it matters that children are being read to, being creative and drawing – which is a basic building block for early literacy! If doing fun crafts adds some interest and novelty to keep them interested that’s awesome , and I like doing that but it’s just a wonderful bonus to those other basics.

Some other achievements Allie has tucked under her belt are winning Best Website Award on HillbillyHousewife.com, having a craft (#11)featured in Cookie Magazine and having a write-up on Shine from Yahoo. Allie should be very proud of all that she has done. She’s a warm, genuine person and I am honored to call her my friend.
