BEARPAW Shoes Evaluation

My very first blog entry (besides my introduction) for LookWhatMomFound was a analysis for Bearpaw boots. I had purchased a brown pair for myself and a black pair for Sabreena last winter and we love them! I actually can’t wait for the weather to cool down so I have an excuse to wear them again. It just made sense to try out the other Bearpaw products as soon as the summer season started coming to an end. I recently received a pair of chestnut Loki slippers. I’m going to say it again, YUM. Luxurious sheepskin lining and a velvety soft suede outer paired with a hard rubber sole makes for comfy wearing ALL DAY. I’ve been wearing these to Shaun’s bus stop, grocery store, park, walks, mall, EVERYWHERE. I wore them this past weekend to my parent’s and my mom pointed at them looked at my dad and said I WANT THEM.

Bearpaw Shoes was founded in 2001 with the intention of providing casual footwear with natural comfortable materials. The sheepskin lining surprisingly keeps feet cool and dry in the summer and warm and toasty in the winter. Bearpaw shoes, slippers and boots can be worn throughout the seasons. This particular style of footwear has established itself as wardrobe basic in the last several years, no matter your lifestyle, your income bracket or your age Bearpaw shoes have proven themselves a favorite with regular folk like me and celebrities all over the world.

As a socially and environmentally conscious company Bearpaw Shoe makes it their objective to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle within the workplace. By utilizing modern recycling methods, evaluating packaging designs and emphasizing “Greener Living” with their employees Bearpaws hopes to preserve the world around us while providing quality footwear that can sustain the elements and regular wearing. Bearpaw and their employees are also involved in community efforts to help make a difference to those less fortunate by teaming up with philanthropic organizations such as Soles for Souls, a project that has donated over 1million pairs of shoes to victims of disasters such as Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the Tsunami in Asia.
I’m a simple girl who loves her slippers and comfy boots with everything from jeans to yoga pants to shorts in the summer. Bearpaw’s Boutique collection helps you make a bold fashion statement by utilizing the newest trends in footwear with exotic furs and wedge heels and their Campus collection is the epitome of comfort with casual slip-on uppers for men and women. And of course they don’t leave out the little ones with the Pawz collection of infant slippers.
Win your own pair of Bearpaw shoes, slippers or boots! Pick any pair from their many collections. Visit the Bearpaw store, pick your favorite pair and come back and tell me what style you have chosen and who they are for.

ReliOn Temple Touch Thermometer

Cold and Flu season is among us as well as the bothersome random runny noses and coughs and in general yucky feelings. Is your medicine cabinet stocked? Ours is but I recently received a nice addition, the ReliOn Temple Touch Thermometer.

I may be a young mom but I’m old school when it comes to taking temperature readings for my kids. As infants I did rectal readings and as they grew up it went to the armpit then under the tongue. I never thought I needed technology for something so simple. Well I was wrong. The Temple Touch Thermometer came I went around the house and got everyone’s base temperature, something everyone should know by the way. It was simple, so simple that Shae now asks for the “mometer” at night. The Temple Touch Thermometer uses a unique probe to record heat flow from the blood vessels in the temporal artery and converts it to body temperature.

The process is super simple.

  • Turn it on
  • Wait a couple seconds for the hour glass to finish spinning and beeps twice
  • Firmly press to temple between eye socket and eyebrow
  • Wait 7 seconds for single beep, reading is ready

Seven seconds can feel like an eternity when you have a sick or cranky child but with a little practice and distraction this can be done without the child even knowing. Certain guidelines should be followed when using this product, things that sound obvious but make your go hmmmmm.

  • Make sure your childs head is not wet, moisture can register cooler
  • Do not use if your child has recently been exposed to direct sunlight or other heat source like a warm bath, their skin will warmer
  • Do not use if your child has just exercised or exerted themselves, skin will be warmer after physical activities
  • Keep the Temple Touch Thermometer in a stable environment like a closet or first aid kit, extreme humidity, cold or hot temperatures can alter this products performance

The Temple Touch Thermometer is going to save lots of time and headache this coming winter. While I don’t look forward to sick kids I do look forward to having this handy tool at my disposal for those night-time fevers because that’s when they always spike! The Temple Touch Thermometer can be found in WalMart and Sam’s Club for approx $10.

Dezign With a Z Wall Decals

We’ve all tried the trick of putting sticky decals on our walls to add come color and design. Most of them turn out flimsy, off-color and lifeless. I found the solution to that problem. Dezign With a Z takes vinyl wall decals to a new level. Dezign With a Z creates Vinyl Wall Decals that are new, fresh, young and stylish, no licensed characters or boring old quotes here. Using a team of talented artists from the US and Europe they’ve come up with innovative designs that rival anything you can find on the market. They have a huge selection of ideas from categories like Floral Art, Wall Clocks, Chalkboard Decals and Abstract everything is made with a high quality matte finish vinyl that gives the impression of each design being painted directly on the wall giving the room a unique finished look.

We were able to try out decals for the girls rooms. Picking out just the right design took a while because there were so many cool choices. I let Sabreena choose her own and she was drawn to the Hawaiian Flowers. Her new favorite color is tuquoise so I knew that was going to be her color selection. The outcome is really pretty and a striking contrast to the boring walls in the dungeon (her room is in the basement). As you can see I add the included butterflies to her mirror for a little fun change.
For Shae’s room I wanted something pretty and girly but not babyish. Moon Girl jumped out and I knew in the right color it would be the perfect addition to her big girl room.

Dezign With a Z offers a video tutorial for installing your wall decals. The process is quite different from other products I’ve tried in the past, it’s more like a 4 step process rather than a peel ‘n stick method. There is a lot of rubbing involved and while not hard it takes a little bit of time. To do Shae’s room took about 30 minutes from start to finish, the larger decal with all the points and edges takes some maneuvering. Sabreena’s room took about the same time but each flower and leaf decal was positioned and installed individually. A credit card was the best tool and didn’t require such a heavy hand as I thought it would. I am pleased with the results in both rooms and equally pleased with the quality of the decals.

Vinyl Wall Decals are a simple way to add a new dimension of color and vibrancy to a boring wall. Dezign With a Z wants to give LookWhatMomFound…and Dad too! readers the chance to make a dramatic and stylish change to their bedroom, bathroom, playroom or anything else. Win a $50 Dezign With a Z Gift Certificate. Visit Dezign With a Z and tell me 3 decals you would love to try out.

The Studio Danielson Designs

You know I love anything and everything personalized. Things made especially for children or for others from a child bring a sense family and pride. Whether it is something handmade, hand-painted, customized or just sentimental these are the gifts I love best.

Danielson Designs is an online studio of fully customizable plaques, signs and frames. Started in Trinidad, Colorado the Danielson family was thinking ahead to the next generation that needed employment in this little town. Pooling together their talents and knowledge they came up with Danielson Designs; a business venture that not only provides great home décor for their customers but also a way to build the community around them.

The Studio by Danielson Designs is taking gift giving and home décor to a new level.
Offering customizable decorative signs and frames, The Studio is the perfect stop for those one of a kind treasures for gifts or for the home. Designing a custom piece takes just minutes and ships in 2 business days. Personalizing signs and frames has never before been this simple and affordable!
The Studio offers a variety of signs and frames for almost any occasion or relationship. Every custom piece is made from 100% recycled wood and finished exclusively with water-based finishes. Better yet, in an industry that’s notorious for sending jobs to China, each and every custom piece ordered on The Studio is made in the USA.

I was asked to analyse something from their studio and it took me forever to choose. Not because there wasn’t anything I wanted but because the choices were endless. My first thoughts went to my new nieces, gorgeous name plates for their doors or above their cribs would’ve been gorgeous but then I looked at my own girls and knew what I needed. I settled on a customized frame “Just Us Girls”. We’ve had a great summer and I wanted to capture that so I ordered the frame with our names and Summer 2009 on it. The Sisters frame was my 2nd choice. It seems each time I look at the site I find a new design idea too, something for another important person or time of my life. The Studio is an easy to use tool with the ability to add your personalized content and color choices or use from their library of phrases or quotes. A proof is immediately available so that you know if the wording or names fit well.

The frame came and it was gorgeous, with a slightly aged and casual printing it is perfect for our home or its eventual home, Rob’s work desk. I’m even more impressed with the speed of the creation and shipping. The frame came in about a week, a wonderful thing to know for last minute gifts especially with prices from $25-$40. The selections are extensive also, from baby furnishings to wilderness themes to beach house designs you’re going to find something for every décor.

Danielson Design wants to help you get a jump on your holiday shopping. Take $10 off of each purchase by using discount code MAMAFOUND. This promotion ends October 9, 2009.

As a extra special treat Danielson Designs is giving LookWhatMomFound…and Dad too! readers the chance to win a custom piece of your own. Visit The Studio and let me know what you would choose.

Your Family Constitution Book

If your family is like mine you are busy from the time you wake up until the time you go to sleep. Life is so busy with work, the kids, sports practice you lose focus on the most important thing you have, FAMILY. It is very easy to let life and family spin out of control even though everything on the surface looks fine. If this sounds like your family you need to read Your Family Constitution by Scott Gale. Scott Gale talks about his life and how he was able to make a change for the better by using a Family Constitution. This book will give you a lot of very valuable ideas and suggestions to get you and your family back on track. The cover of the book says it all, Your Family Constituiton is a modern approach to family values and household structure. Every family deserves to have values and structure.

Scott Gale describes what he calls Black Sunday which occured on Mother’s Day 2007 for the creation of the Family Constitution. He goes into detail on how he and his nine year old son Jack had a falling out causing his family to hit rock bottom. Your Family Constitution then goes into why his family hit rock bottom and all of the work it took and many drafts of his Family Constitution to get his family back to the place where they belonged, Peace. He described how difficult is can be to recover once you hit rock bottom but there is hope and it can be done.

My kids have chores and responsibilities but Melinda and I are very loose with the punishment if these chores and responsibilities are not done. I tend to yell and make empty threats about how they will be grounded for a week only to let them off punishment the very next day. Yelling causes tension and resentment and does not create a great family dynamic. Currently we have a big problem with Shaun and homework. Like I mentioned in an earlier post he still is not in the swing of school so anytime homework needs to be done it is a battle. He cries and wines when we make him read the homework directions because he says it will take him to long to read them. He cries before he even makes an attempt at doing his homework which is the most frustrating thing. Melinda and I tend to get frustrated with the homework process which only causes Shaun to cry so we yell about him crying which only make him cry harder.

I realized something needed to be done ASAP before our problems got too far out of control and that is where Your Family Constitution came to the rescue. After reading this book by Scott Gale I realized we have the same problems as I am sure most parents do and that is getting our kids to listen and do what they are told. Reading this book made me really look at myself as a father and parent on how I interact and discipline my children. I realized I yell entirely too much and yelling gets nothing resolved. It only makes the house tense and the kids more defiant. After reading this book Melinda and I have implemented a chore chart so the kid’s chores were laid out with consequences if they were not done. If a chore is missed the first time they lose half of their weekly allowance, second time they lose their entire weekly allowance and a third time they lose all screen time (meaning TV, computer and all electronics like the DS and iPod). This is a fairly new process so I do not have a lot of feedback on how the process is going so far but I am optimistic and have a good feeling.

We have started a three step process with Shaun and his homework. He was told he needs to do his homework daily with no crying or whining. For the first infraction he gets a warning, the second infraction he gets a five minute timeout in the corner, and the third time he loses all screen time for 1 day. We implemented this last week and it seemed to work during the later part of the week. I feel as the weeks go on Shaun will know the rules and what will happen if they are broken and slowly this problem will go away.

I am hoping since reading Your Family Constitution and implementing rules and consequences my kids will now know what needs to be done and what is expected of them on a daily basis. I am also hoping this will ease the chore and homework tension allowing us to have a less stressful household. I will keep everyone posted.

Scott Gale the author of Your Family Constitution has been generous enough to give 1 copy of his book away to one lucky Look What Mom Found…and Dad too! reader. Go to Your Family Constitution and tell me how you think this book would help you and your family.

Milkshake music Recapitulation

I got a big bottle of Sunshine
Mixed up with a bowl of daydreams
Poured into a suitcase filled with laughter that I found
You won’t find me sitting around

These are just some of the whimsical lyrics you’ll find in Milkshake’s catalog. Milkshake is a Baltimore, MD based kids rock band that have been seen on Noggin, PBS Kids and Discovery Kids as well as concerts around the US. Using music as a peek into the child’s imagination is one way I describe their style. Most of their songs are written from a child’s point of view but there are always exceptions to the rule. You Did It is a song of motivation being sung from a parent to their child. Whatever task is in front of them we as parents know they can accomplish it with a little push and pull.

Milkshake was formed in 2002 as a way for then new parents Lisa Mathews and Mikel Gehl to stay in touch with the music that was going to influence their children’s lives. With a background in indie rock they used their enthusiasm and originality to gain a strong following over the next few years with fellow bandmates Tom Moon, Cord Neal, Brian Simms and Michael Sheppard. Great Day is Milkshake’s 4th studio album and was just released in August along. This album like all the others (we have them all) is a celebration of all things KID. With songs about family, feelings, friends and FUN it touches on the topics that are important for kids.
Milkshake wants to give LookWhatMomFound…and Dad too! readers the chance to win a special giveaway, the Great Day CD PLUS a Milkshake Tutu just like Lisa wears or a Milkshake Moo t-shirt OR Milkshake’s complete studio album catalog, that’s 4 CDs. Give Milkshake music a chance and tell me a song you really like from their website or Facebook page. Also tell me which prize you would like to win.

P.F. Changs New Kids Menu Recapitulation

Long gone are the days of regular date nights and not just for us but for most busy moms and dads out there. We’ve learned to adapt to the shortage of time and do the things we really love. Rob and I love to eat yummy food! One of our favorite spots if P.F. Changs China Bistro. We settle in at the bar, order a drink and 3 starters to share; chicken lettuce cups, crispy green beens and either the big bowl of wonton soup, crab wontons or dumplings. We do this because everything is so good we have a hard time deciding on one meal each. On the few occasions we have gotten meals we love Mongolian Beef.

We have always kept P.F. Changs to ourselves; it wasn’t always a kid-friendly place. This has recently changed. P.F. Changs China Bistro has introduced a kid’s menu where all the kids’ meals are less than $5, designed with a child’s palate in mind and include all the fresh and delicious ingredients as the regular menu.

The new menu includes:

  • Kid’s Chicken served with honey or sweet and sour dipping sauce

Kid’s Lo Mein, egg noodles stir-fried with chicken

  • Kid’s Chicken Fried Rice- without the veggies
  • Baby Buddha’s Feast, carrots, snap peas and broccoli steamed or stir-fried

Along with the above meals your child also gets a take home kids cup.

On a recent random Saturday night Sabreena went out with her girlfriends so we decided to do the unthinkable; take Shaun and Shae to our sanctuary. It was still early enough that the wait was manageable but if we had waited any longer the kids would’ve become restless. We were seated and quickly greeted by our server who was friendly and talked to the kids like they were guests too. We ordered Baby Buddha’s Feast for Shae and Kid’s Lo Mein for Shaun and let them share. We also shared some of our rice and entrée and appetizer (just one) with them too. They really enjoyed almost everything they tried. P.F. Changs even offers cute shot glass size desserts for $2. The kids each got one while Rob and I split the Banana Spring Rolls (another luscious decadent favorite of ours).

While P.F. Changs may not seem like the family friendly eatery from the outside the atmosphere is relaxed the staff is friendly and food is yummy yummy yummy.

LookWhatMomFound…and Dad too! readers have a special giveaway from P.F. Changs China Bistro. Win a $100 gift card to treat your entire family to a fabulous dinner. Take a peek at their menu and tell me what you or your children would like to order.

The Safe Sporter Evaluation

Kid Basix has again produced a safe non toxic alternative sippy cup for older kids. The Safe Sporter is the newest addition to the Kid Basix family and is constructed with the same stainless steel body and BPA and phthalate free materials as the The Safe Sippy and The Safe Starter.

Shae is at the stage where a traditional sippy cup is no longer needed. She sees her big brother and sister drinking from sports bottles and often steals them to drink. Kid Basix must have known about our dilemma so they sent Shae their new Safe Sporter. She loves being able to close the spout and lid when she’s done sipping, I think she closes and opens it more than she actually drinks. This cup has features that are perfect for this age or running about and taking the cup along.

• Mud Cap-prevents other kids from taking a sip
• Pull Spout-spillproof when closed
• Stainless Steel body- no chemical leaching into your child’s drink
• Wide Mouth-easy cleaning access
• TPR Sleeve-no slip grip plus insulation from cold drinks
• Plastic Coaster-no damage to tables
The Safe Sporter comes in 3 colors, fucshia, blue and lime and is available in 2 sizes,  12oz and 16oz to accommodate your child’s thirst level. The bigger size is plenty big enough and stylish looking for bigger kids lunch bags also.
Win a Kid Basix Safe Sporter in your choice of color here at LookWhatMomFound…and Dad too! Tell me your favorite feature of The Safe Sporter.

Crazy Forts Recapitulation

What is it about tents and forts that intrigue children so much? I remember building them when I was younger, my brother and I would lean sofa cushions against chairs and tables and throw blankets over them to give ourselves a private little space. Crazy Forts is an awesome build your own structure set lets children us their imaginations without batteries.
Crazy Forts is the unique design invention of Jim Whitney. With just a bundle of sticks and some connector balls and a simple bed sheet kids are able to construct a sturdy but lightweight place to call their own. Simple assembly allow kids as young as 4 to help with the construction but they definitely need some help to get the entire house, igloo or rocketship built. Sabreena has taken over this task but Shaun is a big help. I do wish it came with a carrying bag or a reclose able box for easier storage and transportation, the original box works fine just doesn’t close again. My parent’s house isn’t conducive for forts as their furniture cushions don’t come off and the furniture is too heavy to move around. Crazy Forts is going to let my children continue the fun from our house to the grandparents plus the outdoors if that suits them.

The Crazy Forts house has become Shaun’s and Shae’s standard watching tv spot. Set up strategically in Sabreena’s room this is where they sit on Friday’s movie and pizza night to watch Finding Nemo or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The Crazy Forts igloo is where they play veterinarian in the playroom. It takes up a good amount of room so the few times they’ve set it up in the living room we’ve had to push back furniture. The optional LED lights add illumination to the standard dark cave feel that forts have. LED technology gives light but that are cool to the touch plus they shut off after 20 minutes.
Available at cool kid’s toy shoppes and online, Crazy Forts run approx $40-$45; less than a traditional playhouse structure but with the ability to change shape and location of play, not something you can do with a big bulky plastic playhouse in most backyards and playrooms. Did you design a cool fort?  Did you combine 2 sets to make a mega fort for the entire family?  Submit your design to Crazy Forts Facebook Group to show off your unique design.

Crazy Forts is giving LookWhatMomFound…and Dad too! readers the chance to win their own Crazy Forts structure set. Visit Crazy Forts and tell me where you can shop for one. Is it in your town or is it online?

Aloha Friday – Back to School

Welcome to this week’s edition of Aloha Friday. Head over to An Island Life for more Aloha Friday!!

In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that we take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So I thought that on Fridays I would take it easy on posting, too. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.

If you’d like to participate, just post your own question on your blog and leave your link below. Don’t forget to visit the other participants!

My Question is: Do you have children in school? If so when do they go back to school and what grade are they starting.

We have 2 start school on 8/31. Sabreena is 13 and going into 8th grade and Shaun is 6 and going into 1st grade.

Check out our current Giveaways list in the right hand column!!!
