Family and Breakfast – What More Could You Ask For!

I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of The Motherhood for Pillsbury. I received a promotional item to thank me for my participation.  All opinions are my own.

It’s Sunday morning and the wife and I have finally been able to sleep in past sunrise. The weekdays offer up twilight starts and tiptoeing through the house so we don’t wake anyone else. We live for the weekend to get just a couple hours of extra sleep. it’s time to get up though. We hear the dogs sniffing at the bedroom door. We hear kids running down the steps and the muffled voices from the tv.  They’re waiting for us; it’s time for the much anticipated weekend breakfast.

Depending on what’s on the agenda for the day breakfast can be simple like oatmeal and yogurt or long and lazy with eggs, meat, sweets, waffles and fruit.  Let’s not forget coffee, hot and lots of it.  Weekend breakfast is all about hanging out as a family.  We plan our day or our week. We talk about movies, video games, friends and food. We laugh a lot. We often get the side-eye from Melinda as the kids have taken on my potty humor.

It doesn’t really matter what’s for breakfast.  It’s all about the time spent gathered around the island connecting with each other.

IMG_1613

That doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy good breakfast.  Melinda has definitely mastered the veggie frittata.  The kids do love when we have something sweet though.  Pillsbury Grands! Cinnamon Rolls are definitely a favorite in this house.  They have become such a staple in our household that they are the official breakfast of the Babiak Family on Christmas morning.  The kids talk about this tradition all of the time and I hope this is something that they take with them and carry on when they have families of their own.

IMG_1328

It’s the simple things in life that make us happy. Pillsbury Grands! Cinnamon Rolls and hot coffee are what we need for a complete weekend breakfast.

Don’t forget that if you want to start your own tradition Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls are available nationwide in major grocery and retail stores.

For more information, visit Pillsbury on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

What are your favorite Saturday and Sunday morning traditions?

Apple Picking and Fall Festivals in Delaware Valley

It’s a special time of year for my family. Yes it’s back to school. Yes it’s almost fall. But most of all it’s APPLE PICKING and Fall Festival season.

Each year, as a family, we pick apples. We pick very specific apples too, Honey Crisp. If you haven’t had a Honey Crisp apple you are missing the most delicious apple in the world. Their window of opportunity for picking is short and some people like to blame us for their short supply.

There have been years when we’ve brought home 40lbs of apples. It sounds like a lot but with 5 people picking at the same time the bags fill up very quickly.Apple Picking and Fall Festivals in Delaware Valley #appleseason

So each year as Labor Day approaches I scour the local orchards to see when the picking begins and make sure we’re there on opening day.

This year, just like the last 4-5 years we were at Milburn Orchards at 10am. We hoped on the tractor and got a ride right into the apple orchard to have our way with their dwarf trees. It’s one of our favorite things to do.

There are so many great orchards in the area. These orchards are the the epitome of pure family fun. There are baked goods to eat, fresh cider to drink, hay bales to climb and animals to feed. Each location has different amenities and features but you’ll never be disappointed. Whether you’re looking for Pick Your Own fruit and pumpkins or build your own scarecrows or hayrides through haunted woods you’ll find so much in the area. Apple Picking and Fall Festivals in Delaware Valley #appleseason

Our Summer with Camp Invention

The summer is wrapping up and the kids head back to school next week. While we definitely took advantage of the long summer vacation we definitely made lots of learning moments.

Weekly trips to the library opened their eyes to Greek mythology and magic.
Hikes in the state park introduced them to nature and taught them the Poison Ivy song.
Rainy days reinforced their imagination to beat the boredom.

Then there’s Camp Invention. Shae took a week of her vacation and spent it creating, discovering, inspiring, building and exploring. Camp Invention is the nation’s premier summer enrichment day camp with a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) with hands on activities.Camp Invention 2015 Ambassador Review

Her week long experience was amazing. She loved the fun that was injected into each day’s project and came home excited for what was in store the next day.Camp Invention 2015 Ambassador Review

We started the week with a box full of recycled materials, craft supplies and and old DVD Player. They were told they were going to reverse engineering their broken appliances to create a maze of circuits. This exercise focuses the kids’s minds on strategy, problem solving and innovation. I witnessed the kids in Mr. Ostheimer’s class eager to get started. They listened intently on directions, interjected their own ideas for the upcoming week and immediately got to work learning about the tools and supplies needed to stay safe.Camp Invention 2015 Ambassador Review

Camp Invention 2015 Ambassador Review

KartWheel might have been the most exciting part of Shae’s week. Utilizing teamwork, communication and household products and cardboard boxes the kids built go karts that were raced then destroyed with water balloons.Camp Invention 2015 Ambassador Review

There’s no reason to worry about summer brain drain when there are opportunities like Camp Invention in your backyard. We’ll check back next year and hopefully Camp Invention comes back in our area.

Time To Talk Hungry Jack Protein Pancakes Plus Giveaway

Elmo says breakfast is the most important meal of the day and I totally agree and so do my kids.  They love pancakes so much they would eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner and that is a huge reason why I am very proud to be a part of the Hungry Jack Team telling you about PANCAKE-ISMS and some great new Hungry Jack products.

IMG_1458

HUngry Jack Pancakes

People love breakfast because it’s easy to eat a protein packed meal like eggs or even a protein shake and most likely pancakes would never cross a persons mind until now.  Hungry Jack has an awesome new protein pancake mix that contains 10 grams of protein per serving.  If you love pancakes and eating a protein packed meal you can now have both with these new pancakes which in my opinion totally rock.  My kids tore up these pancakes the first time I made them and they were asking for more and how could I deny them these delicious new protein pancakes.

IMG_1461

If you love a piping hot stack of pancakes like my kids and I do you know putting cold syrup on them is a real bummer.  Hungry Jack has also fixed that problem by giving us the newly updated 27.6 oz. Hungry Jack Original Syrup which is microwavable.  SCORE!!! So now there is no reason to put cold syrup on steaming hot pancakes.  I think I am in heaven.  Writing this post is making me want to go into the kitchen and whip up some pancakes.

Hungry jack Syrup

Being a part of the Hungry Jack team is awesome and we have a lot of fun  For this post they challenged me to come up with my own PANCAKE-ISM.

What are PANCAKE-ISMS you ask? A Hungry Jack Pancake-ism is a hearty bite of worldy wisdom, served with a side of wit. Some are short and sweet, and others are a little more reflective, with an unexpeced twist. However you stack it, Pancake-isms are the perfect mix of racing, pancakes, and satisfying straight-shooting humor.

Here are a few awesome ones that Hungry Jack came up with:

  • A pancake’s worth a thousand words.
  • If you love a pancake, let it go. If it comes back to you, eat it.
  • It takes two to tango. It takes one to make pancakes.

Now it took me a while to come up with my own PANCAKE-ISM because I am not witty as most but here it goes : If you make Hungry Jack pancakes, they will come!Shae eating Hungry jack

It’s time to have #OneConversation #ActAgainstAids #CDC

I think I’ve done a good job at parenting my oldest when it comes to being open and honest about the dangers of unsafe sex, drug use and illicit behaviors. Some conversations aren’t easy to have to ensure you and your family are safe the job needs to get done.

Sabreena has been exposed to a lot in her 19 years. She’s aware of what’s really going on in the world and the struggles that many face by prejudice of all kinds.
I was approached to bring to your attention of a plague affecting the Latinos and Latinas living in the United States. Did you know Hispanics account for 19% of those affected with HIV/AIDS but we only account for 16% of the population? The disproportion comes from the lack of outreach and education, language barriers and discrimination. As a culture Hispanics don’t talk about personal issues, especially those that are considered taboo. We hope deep down that our family and friends are taking care of themselves, making the right choices.

Have #OneConversation at a Time to Stop HIV #CDC #AltaMed #HIV

Sin Vergüenza (which translates to Without Shame) is an exciting, entertaining, and suspenseful telenovela web series, produced by Los Angeles-based AltaMed Healthcare Services. It takes viewers into the lives of a dynamic Mexican-American family coping with issues around HIV and sexual health. Each family member represents a different age group, sexual orientation, and marital status and faces unique challenges. Each person is also at risk of getting HIV.

The high risk of contracting HIV/AIDS isn’t inclusive to just the Hispanic community but the high rate at which this demographic is being infected needs your attention. If current trends continue, an estimated 1 in 36 Hispanic/Latino men and 1 in 106 Hispanic/Latina women will be diagnosed with HIV at some point in their lifetime.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recognized this epidemic and launched We Can Stop HIV One Conversation At A Time. This national campaign encourages open lines of communication between the Hispanic community to educate and inform family, friends and loved ones of the dangers of unprotected sex. This call to action stresses the need to talk about HIV/AIDS and how no one is immune; no matter the marital status, age and sexual orientation.Have #OneConversation at a Time to Stop HIV #CDC #AltaMed #HIV

The choices we make stay with us. The information is available and now it’s time to share it with those that need it. Start the conversation and have facts on hand if you suspect someone you love is at risk.  One Conversation at a Time is free to use, has downloadable materials and has facts on how to protect each other.  It’s time to let go of the stigma and educate, especially our youth. Young people, aged 13-24 are especially affected by HIV. They comprised 16% of the U.S. population, but accounted for 26% of all new HIV infections in 2010.

There’s so much to live for. Let’s not waste another minute. Share what you now know about the rising rate of HIV/AIDS in the Hispanic community and how to stop it in its tracks with #OneConversation.

This post is made possible by support from the We Can Stop HIV One Conversation at a Time campaign. All opinions are my own.

Having A Hard Time Finding Balance

How the heck do parents, fathers, and mothers find a good balance between work, family and personal time?

I am a UPS driver and my day typically starts around 7am and typically ends around 7:30pm. By the time I get home from work I am utterly exhausted and find that I have zero time for anything other than eating dinner, showering and going to bed.  I feel like the kids stay up later than I do especially during the summer and I definitely feel like I barely see my kids until the weekend rolls around.  It is soooo frustrating and annoying but I know that I need to work and make money for my family but at times it really bums me out that I am never home.

IMG_0874

I love the rare days when I am off or get home before 7pm because it feels like I have sooo much time to spend with the kids and Melinda.  That happens maybe once a week which is better than nothing so I know I shouldn’t complain.

I thought I hated my office job but I always (99% of the time) got off at 5pm and was home by 6pm.  I would kill for those hours again but that ship has sailed so I should stop living in the past because those hours will never happen again.

I know that I should be happy to have a job because a lot of people don’t and I am very thankful that I do I just wish I was able to get home a little earlier each night. That is all that I am asking for.

Do you have a crazy work schedule? How do you balance work and family?

Owning my Strong and my Weakness #Mudderella

It was the worst day of my life. I’m not proud to admit it but I regretted it 20 minutes in.Mudderella #CapitalRegion

Mudderella isn’t for the faint at heart and it definitely isn’t for those lacking healthy fitness regimens. I had high hopes for myself thinking it was going to be lots of fun and motivating because of the large groups of women all struggling to get through the obstacles together.

I was wrong.  Partly due to my own lapse in judgment and some due to poor planning.  The event itself looked like it was organized and planned out well except for the parking.  That itself put us 40 minutes past our scheduled start time.  When we approached the corral to start it was empty. We were informed we were the last group going out. This was a bit disheartening. It meant we were already last before we even started.

My teammates and I started off strong. The path was rough but it felt good to actually get moving.  The heat caught up to me, quickly. Approaching the 3rd obstacle I felt terrible.  The sun was beating down the water stop was way behind and I couldn’t think to take another step. I bailed.  I pulled over to the side go sick, got a water bottle off some really kind spectators and waited. Mudderella #CapitalRegion

I felt terrible. I watched women of all ages, sizes and handicaps pass where I was sitting in the shade. I knew I didn’t take this seriously.  I knew I didn’t train the way I should’ve. I regretted it for the next 45 minutes just waiting for my teammates.

I was asked by an older woman if this was where I stopped, did I quit at this spot. I said no, I took a shortcut to wait for my friends. She said it didn’t matter, that I did what I could do and she was proud of me.  I felt like such a bum.  She didn’t see that but that’s what I felt like inside. Mudderella #CapitalRegion

Mudderella is all about what this woman did for me. Empowerment, motivation and strength. She didn’t see my failure, she saw my attempt. I’m not sure If I’ll do this kind of even again but I do know I have to have the strength to try new things and push myself to work harder.

Did I have fun? Yes, regardless of the miserable outcome I had a great time.  I’m glad to be a part of this event to bring awareness to Futures Without Violence also.  Mudderella is committed to a great cause — the prevention of domestic violence and supporting those affected by it.

Futures Without Violence is a national nonprofit that is working to prevent and end domestic violence by developing innovative programs and policies that:

  • support victims, survivors, and their families and help them get to safety

  • and much more

Factoring In Your Total Cost Of Ownership

When you are considering the purchase of a new vehicle, there are a great many costs to factor in that you may not have previously taken into account. Chief among these stealth expenses is the total cost of ownership, which will include a myriad of different elements. To complicate the issue even further, the total cost of ownership will regularly vary according to the area you live in. For example, the total Tacoma cost of ownership may be radically different than the cost of ownership for the exact same vehicle model in El Paso or Sioux Falls.

Different Conditions Account For Different Expenses

The place you live and drive your vehicle in will play a significant part in determining the total cost of ownership for your vehicle. For example, if you should live in a hot, dry, environment, such as New Mexico, the value of your vehicle will depreciate based on completely different factors than if you lived in Alaska. You will also have very different expenses to deal with when it comes to maintaining your vehicle in good running order. Heat, sand, and dry air will be factors to worry about that would simply not be present in another area and climate.

Keeping Your Vehicle In Tip Top Shape

Obviously, the chief issue that will run you into money when owning and operating a vehicle is your daily maintenance cost. This includes such items as oil, gasoline, brake and wiper fluid, and the like. You’ll need to keep your vehicle running smoothly via regular check ups at the dealership, and you’ll need to keep it clean with plenty of timely visits to the exceptional car wash experience in New Jersey. These are all routine daily maintenance costs that must be factored into your budget in order to keep an accurate record of your total expenses.

Adding It All Up In The End

In the end, if you can add up all of the maintenance costs for your vehicle and still come out well in the black, you’ve made an excellent purchase and can feel proud of yourself. If you can possess the foresight and research skills to calculate a projected total cost of ownership for the vehicle you are considering purchasing, you will have done yourself an even greater service. It’s a skill that can be acquired through patience, and one that you can use to great advantage.
