Scholastic Books Christmas Prize Pack Giveaway

Books, Books and more Books! Scholastic has released 2 great stories just in time for Christmas; It’s Christmas David and Captain Blue Sky.

It’s Christmas David
Christmas is coming, and Santa Claus is making his list. David is trying to be good, but when the house is filled with candy canes, Christmas cookies and beautifully wrapped gifts, it’s very hard to stay out of trouble! From wayward snowballs to the sleepless excitement of Christmas Eve, best-selling author David Shannon perfectly captures the joy and laughter of the holiday season.

Captain Sky Blue
Santa brings Jack his best toy pal, Captain Sky Blue, a pilot. Sky speaks in Pilot Talk (“Roger! Wilco!”). After a thunderstorm separates Sky and his buddy (“Mayday!”), Sky is abducted by a whale, then left alone to wander a frigid ocean floor until he chances upon a very special place, a place where he’s been before (“Now I’m spooled up!”). Captain Sky Blue thinks he has finally found an easy way home, but first he must help Santa out on Christmas Eve –a challenge that puts his pilot skills to the test! From Caldecott Medal Winner author Richard Egielski.

Shaun Thinks Money Grows On Trees

Today Shaun’s Scholastic book form came home from school and he asked if he could get some books. I told Shaun to circle what he wanted and I would look to see what we would get if anything at all. Shaun went into the kitchen and came out a little while later saying he needed $12 for Snow Science (you make your own snow flakes) and then another book that I can’t remember.

Shaun then asked me what Harry Potter books Sabreena had because he saw them in his Scholastic magazine. Not sure why he is asking because he is not able to read those books yet. He must have asked Sabreena because he came back downstairs a few minutes later went into the kitchen and then came out an said “Dad, I need $35 so I can get Snow Science, Scooby Doo and Harry Potter”. Melinda and I laughed immediately. His book order went from $12 to $35 in an instant. This boy must think money grows on trees!!

As you all should know by now I’m in love with the magnificent work of Anne Geddes; this includes her books, calendars, stationery and journals; even her children’s clothing lines are adorable. My Pure book has been a keepsake for 7 years now, it’s a book that reminds me of the wonders of being pregnant and holding a tiny baby in my arms. Beginnings is exactly the same; each photo is perfect, sometimes more perfect than the one before.

With threat of a hiatus in her future Geddes stumbled onto an exhibit of birds’ nest and was inspired to create Beginnings. The process took 12 months of photographing the simplest elements of nature and newborn life. A combined 140 images of new subjects as well as some returning faces comes together to form this new masterpiece.

Maneesha was photographed holding a preemie infant girl; 17 years prior she was a preemie being photographer herself.

A perfect gift for any woman, enter to win an AUTOGRAPHED copy of Beginnings. Visit AnneGeddes.com, review the Beginnings pages and tell me one of your favorite new images.

Back to School Kobo eReader Giveaway-CLOSED

Do you like to read books but hate to go to the library or bookstore to get them? I am not a huge reader but I try to read a book every month but my biggest problem is I am too lazy to go anywhere to get a book. So when I got the opportunity to review the Kobo eReader I was ecstatic because that meant I would no longer need to venture out for my books.

The Kobo is the newest eReader from Borders which has some pretty cool features. The first thing that I thought was pretty cool was that the Kobo comes preloaded with 100 classic eBooks like A Tale of Two Cities, The Art of War, Dracula and 97 other titles. So right out of the box you can begin reading with zero effort. If those 100 books do not interest you all you need to do is plug in your Kobo using the provided USB cable or sync up via your Bluetooth with select smartphones to your Borders library.

The Kobo also allows you to jump around from book to book and chapter to chapter just like you would if you had a printed book in your hands. I also like the weight, size and the quilted back which gives you a real book feel. Since the Kobo supports PDF files you will be able to view images in graphic novels and other illustrated texts.

For those of you tech people out their here are some additional tech specs for the Kobo:

– Measures approximately 4.7 x 7.2 x 0.4 inches, and weighs less than 8 ounces.
– Logically planned 4-way D-pad and center select navigation lets you move between screens with ease.
– 1 GB Memory allows you to carry over 1,000 titles, add an SD card for additional storage space.
– Battery charge lasts up to 2 weeks.
– Supports ePub, PDF and Adobe DRM file formats.

This is my first eReader so I do not have anything to compare it to but for me the price is right at $149.99. I like how when you have the Kobo turned off the cover image of the current book you are reading is displayed just like you would see if you closed a printed book. I do have to be honest that at first this feature made me think that I did not have the Kobo turned off properly. Also, I did have trouble figuring out how to move from book to book but after a little playing I did get it figured out. For me it took a total of 15-20 minutes to figure out and that is probably long. I would assume if you have used an eReader before your learning curve would be a lot less then mine. I was disappointed to see that the Kobo did not have a WIFI feature but as I mentioned above you are able to sync up to your library via Bluetooth using select smartphones. I have a Blackberry which is a supported device for the Kobo but I still have not tested this feature out yet.

All in all the Kobo eReader is an awesome device that I would recommend to friends and family and is perfect for anyone who loves to read but hates the hassle of buying, borrowing and returning books. The Kobo will make your reading experience easier and more pleasurable.

Would that student in your life benefit from the simplicity of a Kobo eReader? Win 1 here at LookWhatMomFound…and Dad too!  Visit the Border’s e-book store and tell me a title you would download for yourself.

Border’s Double Dog Dare Summer Reading Tip #2

Summer is in full swing for lots of students. Border’s is encouraging kids to keep up the reading with a sweet little bribe. Read 10 books and get a free one.

  • Read 10 books-any ones you like
  • Download and print or visit local Border’s location for Double Dog Dare form
  • List the books you’ve read
  • Redeem the complete form at any Border’s store by 8/26/10 for a free preselected book

Borders is offering great tips this summer to keep your kids reading and able to cash in on the great free book offer.

“Encourage your children to read books about people and who are different from them. In fact, Katherine Paterson, recently named National Ambassador for Children’s Literature by the Library Of Congress and author of many award-winning books for children, including Bridge to Terabithia says, “I began reading on my own very early because I knew the magic that books held, and when I came to the United States and was regarded as alien by my classmates, books provided me with friends who helped me to understand myself and to have compassion for other people. So I urge everyone to read for your life–for enjoyment and knowledge and as a member of a family and a citizen not only of your community but of the world.”

If you have a tween boy who loves Diary of a Wimpy Kid try introducing him to Pippi Longstocking. It may be a story about a girl but it’s full of adventure and wild antics and feisty characters.
A simple change of characters and stories may be all your kids need to spark a renewed love of reading this summer. Right now buy 2 selected Junie B. Jones books and get 1 free.

Don’t forget to enter to win 1 of 2 $100 Border’s Gift Cards to indulge in great books, new music, e-book downloads and more.
