It Started with One

ronald-mcdonald-house-charities-join-us-for-1-campaignIt all started with one: one child who needed health care, one family who hoped to stay nearby and one community who came together to build the first Ronald McDonald House®. 36 years ago 1 child needed medical attention; Kim Hill was battling leukemia and was that child, that one child who inspired the RMHC system. Her parents slept on hospital chairs and ate from vending machines to stay by her side during her treatment. Their determination to stay close to their daughter inspired one doctor, one football team, one community and one company, McDonald’s, to create and build the first Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia in 1974.

The Ronald McDonald house has become a home away from home for many families across the world. More than 7200 families each night are greeted with warm beds, fresh meals, comfort and support by RMHC staff and volunteers while dealing with some of the most stressful times of their lives. RMHC was started in Philadelphia; I’ve volunteered at our local house in the past and my in-laws have utilized the services over the years while caring for a disabled adopted son. There is a special place in my heart for Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Kim Hill passed away this year. In her memory RMHC is asking people to support the 1 Campaign by donating 1 penny, 1 dime, 1 quarter or 1 dollar to the donation boxes found at participating McDonald’s restaurants.

It doesn’t sound like much but each donation means so much for so many. Last year alone, nearly $25 million was raised through the RMHC Donation Boxes in the U.S. These funds support programs which provide a bridge to quality health care and allow families to give 100 percent of their time to their children so they can heal faster and cope better. In fact, one full Donation Box could provide a safe place to stay in a Ronald McDonald House for up to one night or cover the cost of a dental screening for a child on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile.

Support the fundraising efforts on the Join us for 1 Facebook page, spread the word on twitter using hashtag #1 or visit your local McDonalds and drop off your 1 donation.

Love Coffee? Try Marley Coffee!!

Coffee is a necessity for me especially with waking up at 5:30 am so when I was asked to review a bag of Lively Up! Whole Bean Organic Coffee from Marley I was all over it.

Lively Up! is an exquisite 5-bean espresso blend that is married beautifully with our premier Ethiopian Yirgacheffe. This full-bodied yet well-balanced coffee offers hints of cocoa, candied fruit and sweet caramel. The long, savory finish can be equally enjoyed in drip, press or espresso preparations.

One of the cool things about Marley Coffee is they are committed to respecting the environment and using beans that are farmed and adhere to strict sustainable ethics. It is the Marley family’s hope that the Marley Coffee farm will inspire other Jamaican farmers to join the organic movement, by showing them that sustainable farming can be profitable.

Marley Coffee is also big into kids and believes kids should be on the playground not the workplace and should be playing sports and that is why they started Kicks For Cause Foundation. The foundation aims to build playable soccer fields and soccer camps for children of the coffee-producing communities around the world.

There are approximately 250 million children in the global workforce, 120 million of whom work full time, according to an International Labor Organization (ILO) estimate. Especially in agricultural communities, children are often forced to work just to help their families survive. In fact, according to the US Department of Labor, more children work in agriculture around the world than in any other economic sector, making up an estimated 7-12% of workers.

Marley Coffee is working to change that above one bag of coffee at a time. Every purchase of Marley Coffee also supports our commitment to pay twice the average wage to our family farmers on our Marley Coffee farm in Jamaica.

I love coffee and I was really impressed with the flavor.  This is a coffee I would definitely buy in the future and now that I know about there history and Kicks For Cause foundation it is even more of a reson why I would and should purchase Marley Coffee.

Share Your Breakfast and Feed a Hungry Child

Today one in four children goes without meals due to economic hardships or poverty. These families are food insecure; inability to obtain sufficient nutrition. As a mom I try my best to provide my children the food required to keep their brains functioning and bodies moving.  Growing up I remember going to school without a meal in my stomach.  I don’t want that for my family.

Kellogg’s believes that breakfast can be a child’s best start to a productive and active day. Share Your Breakfast and Kellogg’s will share a breakfast with a child who needs it. Upload a picture, give a description or send a text and Kellogg’s will supply the funds required to a school to provide 1 child a nutritious and much needed breakfast.

Each time you share, Kellogg’s will donate the monetary equivalent of school breakfasts. Kellogg’s will donate up to $200,000 – the equivalent of one million school breakfasts.

Today I shared mine, Shaun’s and Shae’s breakfasts with Kelloggs. That will feed 3 children. A step so small but that will make such a large impact on a child’s life. Help me and Kellogg’s feed the children by participating in Share Your Breakfast today and each day until the goal of 1Million meals is met.

“Buy One, Give One” Comforter Donation Program to Benefit Homeless Children

The Company Store today announced the launch of a Buy One, Give One Comforter Donation Program to benefit homeless children across the country.  With this initiative, The Company Store will donate a new comforter to a homeless child with every comforter purchased from their web site or catalog. As the children transition from temporary to more permanent housing, the children will be able to take their new comforters with them to their new home.

“We’re pleased to partner with charities nationwide on such a vital initiative,” says Dennis Warner, Chief Marketing Officer of The Company Store.  “There are a significant number of homeless children in this country who do not sleep in their own home, in their own bedroom.  The Company Store is committed to bringing some comfort to these children in need.”

According to The National Center on Family Homelessness (www.familyhomelessness.org), families with young children comprise a staggering 34% of America’s homeless population.  In a given year, 1 in 50 American children is homeless, affecting over 1.5 million children across the country and jeopardizing their health and well-being on a daily basis.  Numerous charitable organizations work tirelessly to provide relief and shelter to homeless families, and The Company Store has pledged to aid their efforts.

“Day in and day out, these groups work to deliver services and care to families until they can get into permanent housing.  We hope that the donated comforters will raise the spirits of thousands of children and their families as they work to rebuild their lives.” says Dennis Warner, CMO of The Company Store.

When I Actually Try To Do Good!

So a month or so back I was coming out of Brew Ha-Ha (a local coffee shop) while on my way to work with a coffee and a muffin. When I left the coffee shop I was approached by a homeless man who told me he was hungry and asked if I could help. Since I had just left the coffee shop I had a muffin that I was willing to give him. When I told him I had a muffin he said he had special dietary needs. He didn’t even ask what kind of muffin it was so how did he know he couldn’t eat it. I also offered a granola bar that he declined. Really? You are hungry but the two things I offer you, you decline.

I rarely meaning almost never give cash to people who say they are hungry because I am afraid I am feeding into some kind of addiction that I would feel guilty about. Plus I also have this image that all homeless people use the money for booze or drugs. Maybe that isn’t true but if you are truly hungry why not take my food?

There was a time a while back when Melinda, me and the kids were in Baltimore at Port Discovery and while on the way back to the car we were approached by a homeless man. He asked if we had any food or money. I honest to God didn’t have a dime on me and we didn’t think we had any food either so we said we didn’t and he said thank you and left. After he left Melinda realized she has a granola bar in her bag so she ran after the man who was already around the corner. The man came running back and was so appreciative he said thank you a million times and actually started to cry. It was so nice to have been able to help him out.

I am not really sure what the point of this post is. I guess it is about me not minding helping people out but it is frustrating when people say they are hungry but won’t except your food because to be honest I rarely have cash on me which means I am unable to help at all.
