Soul Kitchen Community Restaurant Doing Good in Red Bank, NJ

As if I needed another reason to love Jon Bon Jovi. The Soul Kitchen in Red Bank, NJ is a restaurant that is truly giving back to the community thanks to Dorothea Hurley (Jon’s wife) the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation.

“Our vision here at Soul Kitchen is to serve healthy, delicious, and when possible, organic meals. At the Soul Kitchen you will notice there are no prices on the menu and you might have been seated with someone you don’t know. Customers pay the minimum donation or volunteer in some way to earn a voucher for a meal.”

The Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation has come up with an awesome idea of bringing together all walks of life for a common goal, to feed our community. The Soul Kitchen opens its doors to everyone, everyone eats regardless of their socioeconomic status. Everyone is fed a delicious, nutritious and fresh meal with ingredients that are harvested locally and organically when possible. Everyone pays. You either pay the $10 donation per meal or you pay it forward with some volunteer work at the restaurant. If you are in a position to pay more than the minimum donation, that goes towards feeding others in the community. This is a win win for everyone.

Help Make the World a Softer Place

snugs across america, charity for kids in needSnuggle is on a mission to make the World a Softer Place. Snuggle fabric softener has launched Snugs Across America, a movement to inspire people to spread love across America.

Each day many children are left with no or very little personal possessions due to difficult challenges they have to face such as medical emergencies, natural disasters, military deployment and domestic disturbances. These children are left to face uncertain situations without the things that may have provided the comfort needed to cope.

Snugs Across America is on it way to providing 10,000 Snuggle bears to deserving children to help give them a sense of love and warmth.
Share a Snug today on the Snuggle’s Facebook Page and get them closer to this goal. Snuggle has pledged to donate up to 10,000 15-inchSnuggle Bears to children in need, with a minimum donation of 5,000 bears, by December 31, 2012 to Hugs Across America, Toys for Tots and My Stuff Bags. For every ten snug photos uploaded and shared on Facebook through November 1, 2012, Snuggle will donate one Snuggle Bear to a child in need.

Emergency Preparedness with The Hunt

Today my family and I completed the challenges for Day 8 of DoSomething.org‘s, The Hunt. The challenges today focused on Disaster Response and Relief and was one of the simplest and most important days in the campaign. Many people are not prepared for a disaster and would be stuck without the most basic supplies should one occur. Today, we made sure we were prepared.

The first challenge was to check all of the smoke detectors in our house and make sure they were fully functional. Our dogs did not appreciate this at all.

The next two challenge was to identify the top natural disaster in our area and set up a disaster preparedness plan and kit. The most common risk in our community is a Nor’easter, a violent storm which occurs along the north east coast that greatly represents a hurricane. They mostly happen in the winter but have come at other times of the year and cause floods and power outages all over Delaware. We collected all of the things that we would need and figured out what we would do and where we would go if our power went out or if the area around started to flood.

emergency preparednessWe searched for the items listed on DoSomething.org and found that we had most of the items somewhere in our house. We just had to collect them into one space so they were accessible in an emergency. Then we came up with our plan. If the power went out, we have several flashlights with batteries strategically placed all over the house. We also have a large box of candles, holders and lighters. We were prepared for the power to be out for a short time. We also have several family members nearby who we could visit if there was a prolonged power outage.

11 Days of Doing Something, The Hunt

Poverty and hunger has been my active cause for about two years. I frequently volunteer at the Food Bank of Delaware and I love it. It is a great feeling to know that you have provided someone with a meal that they would have gone without otherwise. Those who run the Food Bank strive to ensure that everyone gets the nutrition and sustenance they need. They even have a special program during the summer that provides meals to children who already participate in the school year free lunch program. During the summer these children often don’t know where their next meal is coming from, the Summer Feeding Program ensures they don’t miss these meals. I was encouraged to see that Poverty and Homelessness was the cause for Day Three of The Hunt.

The first challenge was to live below the poverty line by not spending more than $1.50 in one day. That’s the price of my mom’s cup of coffee at the convenience store. My house is stocked with food that no one under the line would ever be able to afford. I have running water, indoor plumbing, electricity and central air conditioning. I can only imagine what it must be like for someone who can’t afford to eat let alone cool and light their home. It seems impossible to live on such a small amount of money but this is the reality for so many people in the world today.

The Hunt’s second challenge was to donate 5 food items to a local food pantry which I will be doing on Thursday when I go in to volunteer for my weekly shift.

The final bonus challenge was to visit slaveryfootprint.org and find out how the products you use are connected to slave labor. I took the survey and was shocked by how tied up I was with slavery. Of course the survey is based mostly on assumption and cannot give you an exact statistic but it can open your eyes and make you more conscience of your impact.

I’m really looking forward to completing the other challenges and viewing the photos and videos that people send in. I’m so excited with how many people are participating. They really are making an impact on their community.

“Let Us In” Nashville- A Tribute to Linda McCartney

You might remember my note a few weeks back announcing my mom’s cancer diagnosis. Having to deal with that I’m happy to share this campaign for the Women and Cancer Fund.

The Women and Cancer Fund is a not-for-profit charity led by Dr. Alicia Alvarez and established in the memory of Linda McCartney. Sir Paul McCartney has given his “whole-hearted blessing” to “Let Us In” Nashville, a campaign led by Reviver Music to raise awareness and proceeds for this charity which promotes prevention, lifestyle awareness, enhances available health services and advocates advanced breast cancer and children’s cancer research.

In November of 2011, a special concert to benefit The Woman and Cancer Fund kicked off CMA Week in appropriate fashion at Nashville’s legendary Ryman Auditorium. The concert was hosted by actor/musician Jeff Daniels, who also performed along with SHeDAISY, Sarah Darling, Steel Magnolia, Phil Vassar, Cheyenne Kimball, Juliana Cole, Jeff Daniels, Nikki Shannon Fernandez, Jordyn Shellhart, Chuck Wicks, Nancy Sirianni, Samantha Landrum, and Blue Sky Riders.

Performers for the “Let Us In” event and several other artists contributed an original version of a Sir Paul McCartney song for a charity-based compilation album. “Let Us In” Nashville – A Tribute To Linda McCartney is now available for purchase, and proceeds will also benefit The Women and Cancer Fund.

Sarah Darling’s heartfelt rendition of “Blackbird” was recorded with legendary producer, and lead guitar player on the track, Dann Huff.

Lets Make a Difference in our Jammies

November 19th has been declared National Family Pajama Night! Honestly, every night is Family Pajama night in our house. We live in our jammies on weekends and most of the winter when it’s too cold to go outside. We play board games, video games, take naps and eventually eat dinner while never changing into regular clothes.

The Company Store wants to take this one step further. They want families all across the United States to pledge to plan a memorable evening together doing something that will provide laughter and memories to last a lifetime. Think of something fun, unique and new. If you need inspiration check out the Memory Maker for a new idea a day; you are bound to find something for your family.

Pledging to participate in National Family Pajama Night does more than brings your own family together. Once The Company Store reaches 20,000 pledges they will donate $20,000 worth of jammies to children in need through PajamaProgram.org.

Box Tops for Education and Ford Partnership

This past summer I spent some time learning all about the Box Tops for Education® (BTFE) program at Box Tops University and how easily schools can earn extra cash to fill the budget gaps. Since 1996 schools across America have earned more than $400 million for things like new textbooks, playground and gym equipment and class trips. This was done by students and their families and friends clipping little BTFE coupons from some of our favorite brands like General Mills, Betty Crocker, Pillsbury and Avery.

On October 3, 2011, Ford announced they were partnering with General Mills to provide even MORE earning opportunities for the BTFE Program. Jim Farley, Group Vice President, Ford Global Marketing and Sales and Services shares his thoughts, “We are delighted to be the first automotive company to partner with General Mills on Box Tops for Education because it provides us a unique way to reach and help students across the whole country”. This is the first partnership of its kind and teaming together can only be a benefit for the schools involved.

By purchasing a Ford vehicle, ordering a brochure or watching a product video, consumers will be able to raise money for schools of their choice. During the two-month “Ford Drives Box Tops” Sweepstakes, Ford will provide sweepstakes winners with eBoxTops, which will be automatically credited to the school of their choice. Five 10,000 Box Top prizes worth $1,000 and one 200,000 Box Tops prize worth $20,000 will be given to the BTFE-eligible school of the winner’s choice at the end of the Sweepstakes. Schools can use the money in any way they choose.

Ford estimates it will provide more than $1 million dollars to schools during the two-month program through box top redemptions. This partnership will offer the necessary additional funding schools are lacking to provide quality education and activities to students around the US.

Learn more about the program and get your school involved in the “Ford Drives Box Tops” Sweepstakes.

Raising Money to Create a World Free of MS

Rob does and he needs help from anyone and everyone.
Every hour of every day, another American is diagnosed with MS — we need to take action now to help the growing number of people affected by this disease. I will be riding in Bike MS: City to Shore to help the 13,000 local people living with this devastating disease.

Today, there is no cure for MS, but we’re fighting to change that.

Bike MS City To Shore 2011

any donation will be greatly appreciated

For the last 4 years Rob has been participating in multiple Bike MS rides in Maryland and New Jersey. The 2-day, 175 mile City to Shore Ride 2011 is coming up and Rob is scrambling to raise the necessary funds to ride along with 2 of oour friends. He wasn’t positive if he was going to make it but we moved around some plans and now he’s determined to get to his $300 minimum requirement goal. In years past he’s raised more than the minimum but this year it’s been difficult. Mostly in part to his late sign-up but also to his hating to ask for money.

National MS Society City to Shore Ride 2011-Donate Here

So I’ll do it for him. We are asking for ANY donation possible since each dollar will bring him closer to his goal. Could you reach into your hearts and wallets and help him Create a World Free of MS along with 7,000 other riders.

According to National MS Society

Where do the funds from Bike MS go?

Multiple sclerosis stops people from moving. We exist to make sure it doesn’t.

The National MS Society uses the funds raised through Bike MS to fuel medical research and provide more services than any other organization in the world. We help local people through essential direct services that empower and increase independence, including:

· Specialized MS clinics
· Education and information
· Home/vehicle modifications
· Emergency financial assistance
· Medical supplies
· Home care
· Support groups
· Family programs

Ordinary people, just like you, are taking extraordinary challenges to make this a world free of MS. Are you up for the challenge?

You can help by making a donation. All you have to do it click on the banner at the top of our blog or at the top of this post and you will be redirected to Rob’s MS page.
