Tips for Budgeting as a Family

Starting a family can be expensive – particularly if you don’t properly keep tabs on your money.
Budgeting should start from the early stages of pregnancy and deciding on baby names in order to make sure you’re prepared for the huge change in circumstances that comes with having a child.

Putting a budget in place, though, requires a strategic approach, so here are a few suggestions on getting started.

Do the Basics First
Before you can start saving money you need to work out where your money is going at present if you don’t know already. For instance, do you know how
you much you spend on food every month? If not, why not? Break your budget down in different subcategories like entertainment, accommodation, pets, children and food, detailing all your outgoings and incomings. And try and do budget forecasts months in advance to factor in upcoming costs.

Identify How You Can Save Money
With the state of your finances laid bare on a spreadsheet, it should be easy to spot which areas you’ll be able to make savings. You spot that you’re spending far too much money on, say, takeaways, so straight away you can either cut down or cut it out completely. Set yourself a target for saving yourself a certain amount each week, month and year.

Plan, Plan and Plan Some for the Imminent Arrival
Take advantage of bulk-buy discounts on products that may come in handy once your little one arrives as you may not have the funds to afford them further down the line. Kitting out a nursery can cost a small fortune, so ask around amongst friends and family to see if you can borrow items instead of having to buy them outright.

Carry on Saving After the Birth
Keeping a tight control of your finances following the birth of your child is important or you may risk running into debt. Search online for discount codes and money-off vouchers on everything from your shopping to vacations to ensure you get more for your money.

Stop those Impulse Buys
Unless money is no option then you can no longer afford to splash the cash as and when you like on impulse buys. Instead, you should shop round to make sure you get a good deal or wait for the price of particular items to drop over time.

Our Unexpected Surprise!!!!

About 6 months ago my husband and I got some news that we really weren’t expecting at this point in our lives. We are the happy and proud parents of two very independent and self-sufficient girls, ages 10 and 8. We had fallen into this less demanding world which no longer revolved around taking care of the every little need of a child. It was nice to be able to come and go as we please without having to pack a car full of items for the girls.

At our ages, I’m 37 and my husband is 40, we believed that it was smooth sailing from this point out. We were just preparing ourselves for the craziness of the teenage years, even though they were still a few years off. But all that changed 6 months ago when I found out that we would be having another baby in September. At this point we couldn’t be happier and excited, but I will admit that it did take some time getting use to the idea of starting all over again. It didn’t make it any easier that with every doctors appointment they loved to point out that at 37 years old I am of “ADVANCED MATERNAL AGE”. I know I’m getting older, you don’t need to let me know every time. I can see it in the mirror every morning and I feel it every day with how tired I am. But thank you for pointing out the obvious.

Things seemed to brighten up once we found out that we would be adding a little boy to our already perfect family. Now it’s just trying to get the girls use to the idea of having a little one around. They definitely did not take it well at first. My oldest, Parker, has a crippling fear of vomit and in her eyes all a baby does is throw up. So it took some time and tears to calm her fears and once the baby is here she’ll will fall in love just as she did with her sister. My other daughter, Peyton, took it a lot better but was not happy at all when she found out it was a boy. She had all these grandiose ideas of playing with, dressing up and molding a little sister and a baby boy didn’t fit into her plan. We talked it over and once she realized that she still gets to be the baby girl in the family she started warming up to the idea. We also decided that she could still dress her brother up and we would take picture to show his future girlfriends. She loved that idea! At about 4 1/2 months we finally got over the initial shock of getting pregnant, even though we were not actively trying (and obviously not actively preventing them) and I started to realize how much there needs to be done before this baby gets here. This house is no longer baby friendly and there are so many things we now need to get which we didn’t think we would ever need again. All and all, this is truly a blessing and wouldn’t have happened any other way. And we couldn’t be happier!

A Labor of Love

pregnant bellyGiving birth isn’t easy but there are things that you can do to make things run smoother. It’s all about having a plan of attack and making sure those around you know of this plan. A support team that is going to listen and do what it takes to make mom-to-be happy is crucial. You need advocates for your behalf, loved ones who are going to keep the entire delivery progression less complicated and a joyous occasion.

I didn’t feel like I required a lot of fussiness but knew I my family treated like they belonged.  Rob, my mom, my MIL and my friend Kerry were all key people in one or more deliveries.  They were there, comfortable and included in conversations and decisions.  Here are some other points that should be discussed for a healthy and happy pregnancy, labor and delivery

Discuss your Birth Plan
Your Birth Plan can be as simple as no painkillers or turn the television off during labor. Whatever your wishes are explain them in detail to everyone beforehand; doctors, nurses, family and friends. You may not be able to convey your messages clearly during labor, I mean you are a bit busy.

Stay Rested
I know it’s hard to get comfortable with a protruding belly but find the most comfy spot and stay there. Sleep in a recliner or sofa or propped up on 6 pillows, do what it takes to get as much rest as possible.

Drink like a Fish
Honestly this is the best advice for everyone all the time but pregnant mamas need to follow more explicitly. Water is the answer to so many pregnancy side effects; premature contractions, swelling, constipation and headaches. Water is necessary to flush toxins and rehydrate skin and replenish amniotic fluid. If you suspect something more serious please contact your physician

Keep Moving
Walking is excellent exercise during pregnancy. Its low impact and you can adjust speed and destination to suit your own comfort level. Swimming and water aerobics are excellent ways to stay fit, increase flexibility and get your heart and body ready for the workout of pushing a baby out.

Keep Walking
When it’s time for labor let gravity help you out. Take some slow laps around the maternity floor or walk up and down a flight of stairs but try to stay in an upright position. One position that is quite comfortable is standing leaning on a wall or doorway with your feet about 3 feet away from the wall and swaying or rocking your hips.

Relax and Enjoy
As part of your birth plan include what you need to relax. Dimmed lights, soft music, foot massage and meditation are ideas but choose what is right for you. Don’t be afraid to tell someone that are disruptive, this is your time. I highly recommend soothing music or even the television set to low.  Telling a laboring woman “enjoy this moment” may sound silly but if you take a second and think the miracle is about to happen you’re going to enjoy the experience so much more

I know these tips just touch on so much more that can happen but if you take one little tidbit and it works for you than it was all worth it. Surround yourself with supportive loving people and start thinking how to make this pregnancy and labor full of blissful moments.

Protect Against Everyday Radiation with Belly Armor

As parents we want to keep our children safe; safe from dangers that can and cannot see. Research shows that radiation may be harmful for children, even in utero. Lower engery radiation comes from regular everyday items like cellphones, laptops, televisions and power lines. Ionizing Radiation is much more harmful but not something we need to deal with on a daily basis.

Belly Armor is a new collection of maternity apparel and accessories like maternity belt made to protect your child against harmful everyday radiation. The Belly Blanket is a high quality baby-soft blanket that is meant to be draped over a child or over a pregnant belly while sitting or lying down. The Belly Tee is a lightweight and breathable cotton/spandex blend maternity tee with a layer of RadiaShield to protect your unborn baby.

RadiaShield® fabric is a woven fabric made of 82% silver fiber and is completely safe and non-allergenic. RadiaShield® fabric shields against everyday radiation by neutralizing incoming electromagnetic waves. The material isn’t any heavier than a regular light-weight cotton tee and doesn’t require special laundering techniques.

The health risks from electromagnetic radiation are driven by the amount of exposure and the intensity of exposure. Any reduction of either the amount or intensity of exposure to everyday radiation will reduce your health risk. It is impossible to completely eliminate radiation exposure, but by wearing Belly Armor products during periods of higher risk activities (while on cell phones or working at the computer) you can significantly reduce you and your baby’s risk. Even only 2 to 4 days a week will make a difference.

Belly Armor can be purchased at select maternity boutiques such as Metro Minis, Located in the Upper East Side, NYC and Nest Maternity, San Francisco, voted “2010 Best of the Bay Maternity Store” by Bay Area Parents Magazine. I was looking for something different for my sister’s baby shower, something non-traditional but fun. Considering my sister’s personality and hobbies I decided on this blonde pregnant girl on a Vespa.
It suits her perfectly and she and the guests are going to love it. Once I decided on the graphic the layout design was simple using Storkie’s IDesign. IDesign is easy to use and game me the opportunity to add extra details like multiple hosts, additional location information and more registry information. Babytime Bags, a must-have for mommy-to-be

Pregnancy is a magical time. The first flutters, expanding baby belly, baby somersaults and in the womb hiccups are just a couple of the special joys only a mom can experience. While these are going on the mind is racing with all the other things pregnancy related; excitement, panic, delight, worry, passion, apprehension. Why not give yourself a break on the duty of packing the hospital bag. Babytime Bags is a fabulous company that is doing this for moms but not the same way it’s been done before. The gorgeous quilted diaperbags are FILLED with real necessities like Lansinoh nipple cream, Milkband breastfeeding tool and organic lip balm. If you upgrade to the bbPreme you’ll receive indulgent products like an organic nursing gown, a luxury hospital gown and a lavish bathrobe on top of the items listed for the other bags.

It’s more than just a bag of things; Babytime Bags is helping to ease the stress of preparing for the coming of you new baby. Started by the Mom & Daughter team of Ethel and Nia, Babytime Bags is their first venture into the mommy-to-be world and in my opinion it’s a complete success. The natural, organic and gentle products in the bag were all carefully chosen based on experiences by real moms not by a random must-have list. The cost of each Babytime Bag is less then it would be to purchase each item individually making it a fantastic buy and even better idea.

When my bag arrived I first noticed the rich vibrant paisley pattern, something that is very popular now. The roomy bag itself is well made and sturdy and no doubt in my mind will withstand regular use for many years. The contents were packed neatly and organized. As I started to take things out I felt like it was never going to end, I kept finding something else hidden in another pocket. The only thing mom needs to worry about is personal items like the camera, pjs, undies or clothes to go home. I plan on stuffing a couple more items like trash tabloids, gum , Sudoku puzzles, change for the vending machine and some chocolate kisses, because mama’s going to need a treat after all the work of pushing that baby out.

This bag obviously isn’t for ME, I’m going to pass it along to one of my preggie sisters and I know who ever gets it is going to be ecstatic. I recommend a Babytime Bag for every mommy-to-be.
