How To Make Beautiful Decor For Your Minimalist Home

Minimalist spaces tend to be sparsely decorated with key pieces of furniture and only a handful of artistic adornments. If you want those extra design elements to be homemade, here is exactly how you can knit home décor that will fit with your specific brand of interior design.

If you aren’t entirely sure whether you have a minimalist interior design or not, there are a number of tell-tale signs that show that you prefer a more pared-down sense of style with the rooms of your home. You choose furniture that is sleek and modern, focusing on crisp lines, rectangular shapes and glistening materials like glass or steel. You have open-concept spaces or you at least keep your rooms free of unnecessary clutter so that they feel large. Accessories like pottery, plants, pictures and art pieces are limited so that they add an accent of color or texture — when it comes to decoration, you follow the saying of less being more. If these descriptions are painting a picture of your home, then you happen to have a minimalist sense of style.

Knit or crochet yourself some magnificent home décor like pillows, blankets, afghans, chair pads, tapestries and plant cozies with the help of the Yarnspirations website and their Lookbooks. Their Warm Minimalism Lookbook has twelve sophisticated pieces that you can recreate to match your interior design. The patterns for these gorgeous projects are divided by skill level, so you won’t be overwhelmed or intimidated as a beginner. The Lookbook also recommends what types of yarn to use for the projects, including the brand and fiber. The color and style of the material are left up to you, but you will want to be careful about your selection — a poor choice could clash with the rest of your minimalist set-up and stand out in the room for all of the wrong reasons.

Pillow

To guarantee that you craft home décor that matches perfectly with your interior design plan, you should avoid going overboard with colors. Stick to monochromatic patterns in pastel hues and neutral colors like white, black, beige or grey, because you want your pieces to be beautiful without being loud. Design experts also recommend that you use items in similar tones for your minimalist interior design to avoid a conflict of mismatched colors — instead they recommend that you create interest with different types of texture and materials. You can pair a cable-knit throw made with thick wool yarn, a neat herringbone knit pattern pillow made with alpaca blends, and a bulky arm-knit blanket in a single room. As long as the pieces have similar tones, they will harmonize and perfectly match everything else near them.

Wall arts is another valuable addition to minimalistic interior décor. There are several options you can consider, depending on your minimalism theme. Options like butterfly wall arts will add a unique dimension to your design, enhance texture, and add completeness.

Minimalist interior design trims down inessential elements so that your home always looks clean and organized. All you need is a few stunning pieces like pillows, blankets, throws and cushions to bring the entire space together. If you follow these simple suggestions for yarn patterns, colors and textures, you will create impressive home décor that will make your minimalist house look interesting and immaculate.

Ways to Make your Mattress Last Longer

Mattress

It is very important to take care of everything you buy. Every small item needs proper maintenance, and there is no difference with a full sized mattress. With the right cleaning technique and good maintenance, your mattress will stay in a good shape for years to come. And, once you have spent some money in a good mattress, the chances are higher, that you will expect it to provide comfortable sleep on it for many years. Any average mattress is designed in a fashion to last anywhere from five to ten years or even more, but the way it is maintained can easily shorten or lengthen the lifespan of your mattress. If you are aware of the environmental factors and you also know the best ways to take care of a bed, then it will surely help you, to keep your mattress healthy, clean and providing comfortable sleep as long as possible. Here are a few ways, that you can follow to make your mattress last longer:

The Mattress Must Be Properly Supported:

Supported mattress

It is not required to buy the exact matching box spring with a brand new mattress, but it is very important to make sure the mattress does have the right kind of support. This helps in maintaining the integrity of the materials and preventing early wear issues. You can check with the manufacturing company or just look at the warranty policy for the recommendation. Box springs are usually used only with the spring mattresses, whereas memory foam and other kind of mattresses generally need a firm, solid support. There are many beds that use a frame, which is designed to support the total weight of sleepers and the mattress. The king and queen sized beds should have center support bars. The platform type beds with very wide slats usually need an extra support depending on the mattress type and weight. When considering the finest alternatives, reinforced metal frames or high-density foam supports offer robust solutions to enhance the durability and comfort of your bed.

Using a Waterproof Mattress Protector:

Waterproof Mattress

A waterproof mattress protector is the safest option to go for. It covers the entire size of the bed and keeps the mites and dust particles away. You will find various mattress protectors online, but you need to know what features you are looking for. Tuft and Needle mattress protectors and TN sheets are really good and you can buy one suitable for your bed.

A really good quality waterproof mattress protector always offers enough protection to guard against spills and accidents, and they also minimize the amount of dust particles, debris and dirt that make it into your bed. This actually helps in protecting the materials inside your bed from damage and also keeps skin oils and sweat off the bed and thus reduces the build up of mold and dust mites. The Tuft and Needle mattress protectors also make the cleaning process very easy when accidents do happen.

Wash Bed Linens Regularly:

There are a few things that you need to take care of when you sleep or take rest, like you shed sweat, hair, oils, and dry skin cells. The habit of eating in bed also leaves behind small pieces of food or crumbs, and if you have pets then they can bring in all sorts of things. And, all these things will make your bedsheet really dirty and it can also get into the mattress layers, breeding bacteria and encouraging dust mites. The bed sheets and blankets should be washed at least once a week to keep them clean and fresh. Even when using a waterproof mattress protector, it is still very important to keep linens clean. Even the manufacturers mention that the mattress protector should also be washed following proper guidelines.

Separate Beds For Pets To Snuggle In:

Talking about different stuffs in your bed sheets, it is always better to give pets their own separate beds rather than letting them jump and cuddle up on your mattress. It has been seen that even well trained pets walk outside, drool and shed hair and dead cells just like people, and all that makes your bed dirty. Pets can easily ruin your bed and the mattress, so it is better if they get their own bed.

Keep On Rotating The Mattress At Regular Intervals:

Each and every kind of mattress benefits from being rotated regularly, and it does not depend on the materials used or the size. There are some companies that say it is not that important, but rotating helps promote more even wear, and on the other hand, not rotating the mattress makes depressions and softening more likely. In every two to six months rotate the mattress full one eighty degrees from head to foot. This is more important during the first few years, as you are breaking in the mattress.

No Extra Jumping On The Bed:

Jumping on the bed is not the best idea to be honest. There are some kinds of beds, like the regular water, spring or the air beds, which are more likely to get damaged with tough wear, but foundations, foams and even frames can all wear down very quickly if you are really hard on the mattress.

Take Extra Care When Moving The Mattress:

When you move the mattress, protect it from any sort of damage by encasing it in a plastic like material and avoid the bending or folding. The moving boxes often carry the heavy duty mattress bags and that can be tied with rope or tape to keep the dust, dirt and water off the bed; this also helps in preventing scuffs and scratches. Usually, when moving a mattress, it is the best to keep them upright on their sides, as it helps the total process.

Keep An Alert Eye On Bed Bugs:

Eye on red bugs

As we all know, bed bugs are one of the fastest ways to ruin a mattress or a complete bed, and it is very difficult to get rid of them. If you are sleeping away from your home, then do not forget to inspect the bed from signs of bed bugs and try reliable ways to get rid of them. Follow these methods to make sure your mattress lasts long enough!

Parent-Child Relationship In The Digital Era

Parent child relationship

The parent child relationship is a unique relationship in itself. This relationship is so pure and full of trust, care, love and whole heartedness. However the relationship between parent and child has changed a lot with the changing landscape, human development and lifestyle. The relationship today is not the same kind as it used to be in earlier times. The shift towards nuclear family and loss of joint family system caused by rapid urbanization has changed the child rearing approach. It has become more of an individualistic approach rather than a community affair. Also the perception related to parenting has changed tremendously amongst adults too as they consider it to be a choice and not something natural. With the advent of digital age things have changed a lot and so does the dynamics of parent child relationship. The change is most significant in an adolescent child and parent relation as in this phase the child goes through a series of physical, mental and emotional changes that are affected by the changes in his social environment and particularly his relationship with parents.

With the coming of social media, the friend circle and social outreach of children have increased well beyond the geographic limit. Earlier it used to be under the grasp of the parents because of geographic restrictions. This has created more vulnerability for the parent child relationship. Parents also often lag behind children in terms of adoption of new technologies. The pace with which children adapt technological changes is much faster than ever before.  This lag creates a digital divide between the two generations if the parents do not cope-up with it.

The way children interact now with their parents and family members is far more different than earlier times. Technology has changed the interaction methods as it led to a reduction in the amount of physical interaction and made it more of a superficial kind of relationship. This can cause strains in relationship and lesser meaningful interaction between children and parents.

The other effects of digital era include the decline in the amount of time being given to relationships to flourish. Although technological tools do help in increasing communication and making it better but joint social media engagement drops off remarkably for kids who are six years or above. Hence to make meaningful relationship and to keep the relations smooth it is necessary for children and parents to spend more time together which may be either through the use of digital communicating tools.

Motorcycles – Are You For Or Against?

I have been wanting a motorcycle for as long as I can remember and every time I mention it to Melinda she immediately tells me NO. I am assuming she is afraid that I might crash and hurt myself and she is trying to avoid a phone call to a motorcycle accident attorney.

In a way I can’t say that I blame her because I see serious accident attorney commercials all the time that mention lawyers all over the country even Birmingham, Alabama lawyers. I’m assuming they deal with more than just motorcycle accidents, but I would guess they get their fair share of motorcycle cases. When I watch shows like Sons of Anarchy it makes me want to get a bike. Not because I want to be a motorcycle outlaw or anything, but I can imagine the freedom you feel just cruising down the highway on a motorcycle.

What is funny is Melinda is ok with letting Sabreena, our 16 year old daughter ride on a motor cycle with our brother in law but won’t let me get one for myself, NOT FAIR. Again, I sort of understand her reasoning but really wish she would just trust me and know that I would do everything in my power to stay safe while out on the road. Maybe this post is a plea to Melinda in the hopes that she might change her mind but I doubt she ever will. Melinda is extremely passionate about me not being able to own two things: a gun and a motorcycle.

Now that I put both of those together maybe her fear is me becoming a motorcycle outlaw, LOL.

What are your feelings about motorcycles? Are you for or against them?

Fundraise Smarter, Not Harder: 6 Tips for Moms Raising Cash for Clubs & Teams

Arrange funding for teams

The biggest social butterflies in the world have trouble making the “ask” for their causes. Asking your neighbors, acquaintances, and fellow parents to support your kids’ athletic teams, school clubs, and community groups isn’t always as easy as it seems.

Just one rejection can reverberate throughout your social circle, feeding a cycle of misunderstandings and hurt feelings that can really set back your relationships.

While these tips won’t totally eliminate the awkwardness of making the ask, they do take off some of the social pressure. And they’re sure to reduce your workload, freeing up your (very) limited time and resources for more important parenting duties.

  1. Table at Community Events

Getting a public permit isn’t as hard as you might think. Once your fundraising campaign is in full swing, set up shop at community events like holiday parades, high school sporting events, neighborhood festivals, and the like. Wherever you expect to see a critical mass of fellow parents and sympathetic neighbors, your organization needs to have a presence.

  1. Host a Signature Themed Event

When in doubt, create your own event. According to the experts at ABC Fundraising, a signature event like a pancake breakfast or themed evening party can dramatically increase your fundraising impact without significantly increasing your input costs. Poll fellow fundraisers or team parents and settle on an event that suits you all.

  1. Camp Out in the Grocery Store Parking Lot

The grocery store parking lot is a popular spot for fundraising of all sorts, from the Salvation Army during the winter holidays to veterans’ groups around Memorial Day. Why not add your voice to the mix? Ask the store owner or manager for permission to set up a table in a designated, out-of-the-way area for an agreed-upon window of time, then work your persuasive magic. You’ll want to have colorful signs, flyers, and other informational materials about your group on hand for skeptics and low-information prospects.

  1. Ask Deep-Pocketed Donors to Match Donations

Approach local businesses and kind-hearted individuals about matching donations on a given day. If they hesitate, cap the match at an amount with which they’re comfortable. You’ll still double your money!

  1. Spin Up a Campaign Website

Even if you’re raising funds in a small geographical area, a campaign or team website can really help boost your visibility. Set one up, and don’t forget to add an email newsletter to keep prospective and current donors appraised of your progress.

  1. Publicly Track Your Progress

Speaking of progress: a donation thermometer in your town square may be overkill (and may contravene local ordinances anyway), but that shouldn’t stop you from announcing key fundraising milestones on social media or your campaign website. Let the public celebrate along with you!

What’s Your Fundraising Secret?

If you haven’t yet tried any of the tips on this list, don’t feel bad. There’s no “right” or “wrong” way to run a fundraiser for your kid’s sports team, club, or community group. Whatever gets you to your fundraising goal without encroaching too much on your already-packed schedule is probably worth the effort. With a little luck, you’ll soon be in a position to share your fundraising secrets with your friends and neighbors.

Lessons Your Children Can Learn While Travelling

Life lessons

Everyone needs a vacation. It’s a way for them to get away from their busy lives and rest their tired bodies and minds. It is also an excellent way for families to spend time together.

If you’re a busy parent, travelling with your kids gives you the opportunity to sit down and ask your kids about school and talk about their hobbies. It’s the perfect time to get to know the little person you are raising and find out how they see the world and how you, as a parent, can guide them.

Travelling with your kids allows you to teach them a few life lessons while you enjoy the scenery and each other’s company.

After all, not everything can be learned within the four corners of a classroom. Sometimes, you need to see the world for yourself in order to internalize some lessons. In fact, here are a few you can teach them while you travel:

Life Decisions

To help teach your children about decisions, let them help out in planning the trip. From choosing the destination to allowing them to pack their things with minimal guidance, your children can learn a lot.

When they choose a place they want to go, explain to them the difficulties that come with travelling there. You can reason distance, how much time it will take to drive, and places and activities you can visit and try.

Also, if you think it’s not feasible with your family’s current budget, you have to explain to them the limitations of what your family can and can’t do.

Doing this will help them understand that not everything will come easy, and they need to decide if they will be okay with what they should expect in the places they will choose to go.

Navigation and Time Telling

They say that the GPS is putting an end to the paper map’s existence. However, learning how to read a map and knowing the route your family will take is still a valuable skill that anyone should possess.

While mapping out your family’s route, show your children the roads you will take, and let them choose where they want to take breaks. Let them trace the route with their finger tip, and let them hold the map as you drive. This can keep them entertained while on the road without the use of electronic devices.

As you teach them navigation, use this opportunity to let them practice reading an analog clock. Show them where the hands will be when you leave your house, and where the hands will be on your expected time of arrival. This helps to set their expectations, improve their patience, and can help curb the backseat question: “are we there yet?”.

Culture Changes

The world is a big place filled with different people from different backgrounds. On your travels, you can introduce this to your children and teach them to embrace diversity and the difference in people and not limit themselves to their comfort zones.

As parents, guide them and show them why diversity should be celebrated. Join them and set an example. This is the best way to teach your children about compassion, and it will help shape them into becoming better adults in the future.

Memories are the Best Gifts

Souvenirs are great to take back home, as they remind us of the vacation we had. However, memories make far better souvenirs. Immortalize those moments with photographs. Teach your children to live in the moment and to take a lot of pictures.

Later on, you can create scrapbooks of your trips or arrange photo albums that everyone can look back to where you can smile and reminisce about all the fun you had together.

It’s never too early to teach your kids these essential skills and lessons. The sooner they learn about it, the better. It will help shape them into responsible human beings and it will give you the opportunity to guide them, if you think they are steering in the wrong direction.

So, as you plan your vacation, do your research and look for a standard car hire service for your trip. So, you and your loved ones can drive comfortably to your next destination.

How to Make Money by Spring Cleaning

Sell Jewellery

The holidays have come and gone, and it’s time to refresh your home. Spring cleaning isn’t just about clearing out those dust bunnies and polishing that heirloom furniture you love so much – it’s also a great opportunity to make some extra cash. Online and off, there are quite a few ways to transform clutter into money you can put to good use!

  • Start with the Big Stuff

Is there a car you’re not driving or a big piece of furniture you’re tired of? Clearing a big space feels good! There are a few ways to get rid of old cars: for example, selling to a dealer is an option, particularly if the car is in good shape. If your old car isn’t a good candidate for sale or for use as a trade-in, you can sell it for scrap or donate it and receive a tax break that’s almost as good as money in the bank. Both methods are fairly easy, and both clear up a huge amount of space in your garage.

What about furniture? Start by ensuring that everything is clean and in good repair, and then scout around to see how much others are asking for similar items. Check to see how much it costs to place a classified ad, or cut costs by listing your items online via a free site like Craigslist or Facebook. Be sure to protect yourself if potential buyers will be coming to your home – if you live alone, for example, ask a friend or two to keep you company.

  • Get Rid of Books

Books take up quite a bit of shelf space that you could use to display other treasures. If you have books to sell, you’ll be glad to know that there are a few great options available. Amazon allows the resale of used books, as does eBay. Bookscouter.com and Powell’s, are two of the best places to sell used books online. If your community is home to a used bookstore, you may want to see whether you can trade your old books for cash on the spot!

  • Sell Jewelry Online

Pawn shops don’t offer much for jewelry – even diamond engagement rings go for very little in most areas. If the idea of parting ways with old jewelry has ever crossed your mind but you’re not keen to sell it at a serious markdown, you’ll be glad to know that there is an excellent alternative. Worthy is an online auction house where you can sell diamond jewelry securely. The company enjoys an excellent rating from the Better Business Bureau. They have your diamonds professionally photographed and graded by the GIA, before putting them up for auction to a network of professional buyers. Thanks to the competitive bidding, they ensure that sellers receive fair market value for their items. If the auction doesn’t meet the minimum price the seller agreed to, the jewelry is simply returned.

  • Consign Expensive Clothing

Most of us have a few suits or sweaters taking up closet space. Local and online consignment stores typically accept gently worn apparel in classic, wearable styles. Check out Thredup if you think you have items you’d like to sell. The company accepts tens of thousands of brands, and happily pays an added premium for designer items. Clean out kits are free, and they come with a pre-paid shipping label. The company recycles anything that doesn’t sell, and you get cash for the rest. Just like Worthy, Thredup has an excellent rating from the Better Business Bureau, and all transactions are completely secure.

  • Host a Garage Sale or Get a Spot at a Flea Market

Once you’ve sold items of greater value, it’s time to get rid of everyday items such as pots and pans, smaller furnishings, old paintings, and other things you no longer want or need. If you have lots to get rid of, consider hosting a garage sale. You’ll attract more visitors if you invite neighbors to join you; multi-family garage sales tend to draw plenty of attention. If you have a smaller amount to get rid of, consider renting a table at a flea market during a busy weekend. Sure, you’ll have to sit there and collect the cash, but this is a tried-and-true method for making quick money. Pack up items that didn’t sell and drop them off at a charity or thrift store.

Clearing clutter feels good! And now that you know how easy it is to make money by Spring cleaning, you may feel more motivated to begin. So grab a bag or a box and start clearing! You’ll soon find yourself relaxing in a fresher, cleaner home while celebrating the benefits that come with a bigger bank balance.

4 Ways Parents can Help Prevent Teen Depression

Depression

Adolescence is a very crucial time in life for anyone. Teenagers at this age are full of a variety of emotions, curiosity and anxiety. This makes them vulnerable to different kind of circumstances which may be bad or good for them. Navigating smoothly through this phase of life is not an easy task it requires a whole lot of efforts from the teenagers side and an equal amount of efforts from the side of the parents too. Teenage depression is a pressing problem that the world faces. This also leads to high number of suicide attempts amongst the teenagers. However neurologists, psychologists and scientist studying teen depression have researched a lot on the issue to have a better understanding of what causes teen depression and how to prevent it. What they found was that parents have the major role to play in preventing teen depression. So here are 4 ways parents can help to prevent teen depression.

1. Increased level of Cortisol and C-reactive protein is responsible for higher anxiety and depression. But the levels can be reduced to a great extent if proper parental support and care is provided to teens. All they require at this tender age I the warmth and support of their parents. This greatly helps them to feel relaxed and motivated in difficult situations.

2. Parents should also help their kids by developing strong emotional and social cohesion skills from the very beginning of their life. Being emotionally strong helps the teen to handle a variety of emotions that they feel during the age of adolescence. All they need is the love and support of their parents.

3. Peer relationship is very crucial for teens as they look up to peers for maintaining status getting their approval on daily life activities. However stressed relationship with peers can make things worse for them leading to depression. Parents play an important part in this scenario as they need to understand that breakups and stressed friendship are a part of growing up and they need to make this fact realize to their kids too.

4. Parents can also help teens by making them realize the importance of purpose and goal in life. Parents with their daily involvement in the activities of the teens be it schoolwork or outside school activities can help to teach children to do things which have meaning and purpose for them, so as to remain focused.

The Bodybuilding Benchmark – Raising the Bar For Form and Safety

Body building

One thing that bodybuilding hasn’t ever done well is looking after the health and wellbeing of its partakers. You see bodybuilding and “muscle men” competitions, filled with people who are visually strong but physically weak in many ways.

Due to the drive of having the most visible muscles, many bodybuilders neglect developing the mobility they need to stay flexible and limber throughout their competitions. This is why many bodybuilders can be seen walking around stiffly – their entire upper body moving very little. This can be avoided with proper form and technique training, and we’re going to go into that a little today in our article on raising the bar for form and safety.

Form

When it comes to exercise, knowing your limits and how and when to push them is very important. Working out isn’t as rewarding when you aren’t doing things you didn’t think you could do, so pushing your limits is a must However, pushing yourself too far can result in injuries that can last a long time. Keep in mind that, when it comes to weight training, the weight should not weigh so much that you struggle to prepare for your sets with it. Keeping your back straight when dead lifting and squatting is an absolute must, and you shouldn’t undertake these exercises unless you know how to do them properly. This is because back injuries can seriously and negatively affect you for the rest of your life.

Safety

Making sure that any possible guards and safety protocols are in place for potentially dangerous equipment can save your life, so spare no effort to that end. Leg press machines are designed to place huge loads of weight on your legs, and even safety stops won’t always stop them from breaking your legs if you aren’t careful. Worse still, those without safety stops can kill you if you fumble the plate. Never operate dangerous machines alone, and always be ready to vacate an area if a machine begins to malfunction.

Spotting

Being a good spotter means learning when you should help your partner and when you should take them out of the exercise entirely. When bench pressing, for instance, you have to be beside the gym bench and ready at all times to take the bar away from your workout partner the second they struggle to lift it in any reasonable amount of time. If their arms are shaking, take some of the weight but not all of it, and if they can’t extend their arms fully, always take the whole weight away. Remember, if you can’t lift what they need help with, you can’t help them and you should find someone who can.

Theory

Knowing the theory behind the exercise you’re doing will help you to not only be safer and smarter when working out, but will also help you to tailor your workouts to your chosen goal. Say you want to have decently muscular legs and a ripped torso, you also need to work out a new diet plan for yourself to ensure you get their sooner, and your exercises should be largely chest, back, arms, and shoulder related, with a leg day every week. Taking the time to work out all of this when you begin training is important, because it will make it easier for you to stick to your plan on the days when you really don’t feel like exercising.

These tips and pointers will help you to stay safe when exercising, and avoid injury. Remember to always try to work on mobility every time you work out, as this will prevent you from having to work through multiple injuries and problems at once later on.
