This one brings back memories

Home Décor has never been so much fun now that I’m working with Gallery Direct. You seen Rob’s Father’s Day Gift and our bedroom addition, now it’s time to see the unique twist I installed in our living room.

Merrymaking IV from M Drake

I had a long wishlist of art that I wanted for the house in all different styles. I am particularly drawn to florals and landscape scenes but when I found M Drake’s Merrymaking collection I was in love. It reminded me of vacations at the beach and how little time we spent there this past summer. I wanted to capture a piece of those memories and be able to see it each day. Merrymaking IV is the Ferris Wheel installation and it’s so much fun to look at. With greens and purples it doesn’t match our living room at all but it doesn’t matter. Each person that has seen it is instantly taken a back and mentions how much they like it. I’d love to get another piece but I am all out of wall space in this room.

gallery-direct-ambassador-bloggerGallery Direct is proud to be a sponsor of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. We’ve all seen the extraordinary transformations of families all over the nation. If you take a closer look inside the homes you’ll see lots of my favorite pieces and artists being represented. You can see M Drake’s pieces here at Boys Hope Girls Hope Baltimore.

Take my word for it; Gallery Direct has so much to offer and the quality is awesome. Take a peek around and don’t forget to check out their Facebook page; they often have coupon codes and giveaways going on.

Box Tops for Education and Ford Partnership

This past summer I spent some time learning all about the Box Tops for Education® (BTFE) program at Box Tops University and how easily schools can earn extra cash to fill the budget gaps. Since 1996 schools across America have earned more than $400 million for things like new textbooks, playground and gym equipment and class trips. This was done by students and their families and friends clipping little BTFE coupons from some of our favorite brands like General Mills, Betty Crocker, Pillsbury and Avery.

On October 3, 2011, Ford announced they were partnering with General Mills to provide even MORE earning opportunities for the BTFE Program. Jim Farley, Group Vice President, Ford Global Marketing and Sales and Services shares his thoughts, “We are delighted to be the first automotive company to partner with General Mills on Box Tops for Education because it provides us a unique way to reach and help students across the whole country”. This is the first partnership of its kind and teaming together can only be a benefit for the schools involved.

By purchasing a Ford vehicle, ordering a brochure or watching a product video, consumers will be able to raise money for schools of their choice. During the two-month “Ford Drives Box Tops” Sweepstakes, Ford will provide sweepstakes winners with eBoxTops, which will be automatically credited to the school of their choice. Five 10,000 Box Top prizes worth $1,000 and one 200,000 Box Tops prize worth $20,000 will be given to the BTFE-eligible school of the winner’s choice at the end of the Sweepstakes. Schools can use the money in any way they choose.

Ford estimates it will provide more than $1 million dollars to schools during the two-month program through box top redemptions. This partnership will offer the necessary additional funding schools are lacking to provide quality education and activities to students around the US.

Learn more about the program and get your school involved in the “Ford Drives Box Tops” Sweepstakes.

Toob Time

When Shaun entered the 2 year old class in daycare back in 2005 the teachers were impressed with his animal recognition and sounds.

Typically kids know cat, dog, cow and bird but he could recognize an iguana, zebra, walrus and sloth. While I’d like to take the credit for this braniac moment it wasn’t me. I had Animal Toobs to thank. Purchasing these toobs actually goes back to little Sabreena. We would pick them up at zoos, museum gift shops and often stuff her stocking with one come Christmas. By the time Shaun came around we had already accumulated a grand collection. He truly played with them and we ended up losing a good amount of them by the time Shae got to them. We’ve been adding to the collection again. Here you see we opened up a Farm Toob from GummyLump.com. They are an inexpensive and educational gift for kids of any age especially since they come in a variety of themes like Pirate, Coral Reef and Dinosaurs. Whatever the obsession of the week is I’m sure there is a Toob for it.

Shamu, not a Toob animal but they live together

A great way to learn animal names and sounds

it was a rainy day so we brought the water table inside, empty

horse and farm animals

mooooooo

Thanks to GummyLump.com for including me in your DotCom.Mom Program and sending great toys for my kids to try out. The Toobs were and always are a hit. Visit GummyLump.com for great prices on Toobs, Melissa and Doug and Arts and Craft Supplies for kids.

Turn Errands Into Field Trips to #UnclogYourDay

#UnclogYourDay $1000 Giveaway

If your house is anything like ours it’s busy and when I say busy, I mean from sunrise till sunset. Some days it feels like we are running nonstop, carting the kids around and checking errands off the list such as grocery shopping, trips to the home improvement store or even projects in the yard. Days like these can put a damper on the quality time we spend with the kids, so we’ve learned to incorporate some fun into these trips and projects.

Trips to the garden center tend to be dirty, heavy and confusing. I don’t know what veggies work in our garden or what kind of plant food Melinda wants. Venturing into the home improvement center can be a great learning opportunity for teaching the kids about fix-it projects and tool recognition — providing a little lesson in tools and supplies. I can remember taking similar trips with my father when I was young, and they certainly were able to help me later in life. It makes me feel good as a dad when the kids want to be involved in what I am doing and want to take a ride to wherever I’m going.

While it would be easier and faster to just run these errands by myself, we need to realize they offer quality time with the kids. Best of all they enjoy going and we have a good time together.

This Car Looks Good In Our Driveway

A little while back Melinda and I had a chance to drive the Ford Flex Titanium while heading to Reviewers Retreat 2011 in the Poconos. First reason I was excited was because we currently own a Ford and love it and the second reason was because the Flex is awesome.

The Ford Flex comes right off the assembly line with 20 inch polished aluminum wheels which makes the cars ride smooth as could be and we didn’t feel the road at all. Another awesome feature of the Ford Flex is the 3.5L EcoBoost twin turbo charged, direct-injected V6 engine which delivers the fuel economy of a V6 with the power of a V8. Trust me when I say even though the Flex is a large car it gets up and goes and yes I tested the engine to see what it could do and I was extremely impressed.

The outside of the Ford Flex is something to look at for sure but the inside of the car is where it’s at. The Ford Flex Titanium comes with voice activated navigation system, SYNC in car connectivity system, Sony audio system, ambient lighting, rear view camera and active park assist. In addition to all of the things I mentioned the Flex we drove had dual head rest TV/DVD players which were awesome because Shaun and Shae could each watch whatever movie they wanted and didn’t have to fight over the movie that was selected. We also tested the navigation system on the way to the Poconos and it worked great and was simple to use as well as the SYNC. I like SYNC because the car’s stereo is the phone’s Bluetooth allowing you to drive safely while talking. The leather heated seats were awesome and the ambient lights inside were cool because the kids liked that is could be orange or purple or blue inside the car.

One of the biggest features for us as a family of five was the spacious interior.  It had a third row with plenty of room and all the way in the back behind the third row was a huge space for all of our luggage for a three day trip.  Shaun and Shae had a ton of room in the second row to relax with their stuffed animals and blankets and Sabreena has more then enough room in the third row.  Overall the Ford Flex was a blast to drive and we received a lot of comments on how nice it looked.  It drove and handled like a dream and had every feature plus  a lot more that you would want on the inside of your vehicle if at a ll possible.

The Ford Flex is a fast sporty vehicle that any person at any age would love to drive.

A Family Calendar can help #UnclogYourDay

#UnclogYourDay $1000 Giveaway

Blogging, work, child care, vacations, appointments, school functions, conference calls, football, concerts, play dates, parties and field trips – these are just a few of the things we need to keep track of on a daily basis.

We are a busy family. There is a lot to do and it’s easy to get tripped up and forget something. A family calendar is something I’ve been utilizing for many years. Ours is posted in a central location (the kitchen) where we can all see it at a quick glance, and also add things as they come up. There is no excuse to not know what is on the agenda for the day, week or month. The key to keeping a family calendar is discipline. It doesn’t work if you don’t update or read it. Even the youngest members of the family (who may not be able to read yet) can recognize birthdays, beach days, dentist appointments and sleepovers by using a sticker system. Small visual identifiers can be used to keep the non-readers involved and prepped for the upcoming week.

Along with the family calendar I have my own personal planner that is accessible from my smart phone, iPad, and laptop. If I’m ever somewhere without one of those things (which is highly unlikely) I’m able to access it from any computer. I can schedule blog posts, phone calls, reviews and deadlines in one spot. With the family agenda plastered on the kitchen wall and my personal to-do list at my fingertips, there is no reason to stumble through a day.

#UnclogYourDay by Keeping Tools Close at Hand

#UnclogYourDay $1000 Giveaway

Being a father to a teenage daughter, eight-year-old-boy and three-year-old little girl, you can bet I always need to have tools close by to fix whatever they decide to break that day.

I have two huge tool boxes in the garage filled with wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, Allen wrenches and other random things. I have no idea what some of the tools are even for but don’t want to toss just in case I need them to fix something around the house. In addition to the surplus in the garage, I have screwdrivers strategically placed in drawers around the house along with flash lights and Allen wrenches because you never know when duty calls and I need to make a quick repair before bed or during dinner.

One tool that is essential with three ladies in the house is the Drano® Snake Plus. You can only imagine the amount of hair that goes down the drain on a daily basis. Since Sabreena has heavy, thick, long hair, Drano® is the only solution to my often clogged drain problem.

Having tools and keeping them handy is essential in running a smooth household and doing it quickly. It isn’t cleaning, cooking or putting the kids to bed but my duties as handy-man are necessary to keeping this house safe and in working order.

Hawaiian Lei Craft

Summer crafting is in full swing but it’s hard to get them up on a regular basis. While we went on vacation this year it’s wasn’t tropical or remote like last years trip. To take our minds back to sandy beaches and palm trees we decided to make some flower leis. This particular craft can be adjusted for different ages depending on what you prep, what you allow your child to do on their own and what kind of supplies you use.

supplies are prepped

making-Hawaiian-lei-kids-craft

threading the string

Supplies
2-3 straws cut to 1″-2″
embroidery floss or yarn or twine
fabric or paper flowers in various colors and sizes

Directions
We had striped bendy straws. Shae cut them into into about 2″ lengths and we tossed the bendy part. The flowers we used were cut using Fiskars Punches in 2 flower shapes from various colors of construction paper. Patterned paper would work really well here too. Start threading a straw piece with 1,2 or 3 flowers then another straw piece. Shae put flowers together that were different sizes and colors. When she was done filling up a 20″ length of embroidery floss I gave it a double knot and it was ready to wear.

flower-kids-craft-necklace

pull all the way through

almost there

This is a great craft to work on with multiple children. All of the supplies can be prepped before hand and there is no waiting for paint or glue to dry or worry about huge messes to clean up. if you don’t have punches available fabric flower bunches from the $1 bin can be taken apart and used. They already have a hole in the middle of the petals too so assembly is simple.

all done and so pretty

Have fun with this one and hope to see your end results. Don’t forget to visit GummyLump #300CraftsforKids Blog to see the fun crafts going on over there. This particular project came right from Fiskars Idea Gallery using their paper punches.
