The Safe Sporter review and giveaway

Kid Basix has again produced a safe non toxic alternative sippy cup for older kids. The Safe Sporter is the newest addition to the Kid Basix family and is constructed with the same stainless steel body and BPA and phthalate free materials as the The Safe Sippy and The Safe Starter.

Shae is at the stage where a traditional sippy cup is no longer needed. She sees her big brother and sister drinking from sports bottles and often steals them to drink. Kid Basix must have known about our dilemma so they sent Shae their new Safe Sporter. She loves being able to close the spout and lid when she’s done sipping, I think she closes and opens it more than she actually drinks. This cup has features that are perfect for this age or running about and taking the cup along.

• Mud Cap-prevents other kids from taking a sip
• Pull Spout-spillproof when closed
• Stainless Steel body- no chemical leaching into your child’s drink
• Wide Mouth-easy cleaning access
• TPR Sleeve-no slip grip plus insulation from cold drinks
• Plastic Coaster-no damage to tables
The Safe Sporter comes in 3 colors, fucshia, blue and lime and is available in 2 sizes,  12oz and 16oz to accommodate your child’s thirst level. The bigger size is plenty big enough and stylish looking for bigger kids lunch bags also.
Win a Kid Basix Safe Sporter in your choice of color here at LookWhatMomFound…and Dad too! Tell me your favorite feature of The Safe Sporter.

Shagbags-resuable bags for the fashion-conscious

The world of reusable bags has a new name, Shagbag. A relative new-comer to the eco-bag industry, Shagbags were born in 1997 out of a desire to be earth friendly while remaining stylish. Owners Alli and Stefanie were determined to refuse store bags and this meant the shopping bag styles that are often sold near the check-out. While these bags are useful they are usually unattractive and awkward to fold and store. The duo came up with a design that is not just good-looking but durable and accommodating for many uses.

Reusable bags tend to be designed with a woman’s eye; florals, bright hues, girly patterns. Shagbag, LLC has kept everyone in mind with their different design options including cupcake for the teen, nautical theme for the men and a rubber ducky for for those just wanting tp add a little fun to everyday errands. Each Shagbag comes in its own little pouch also, so in reality it’s like getting 2 bags in one. Use the ShagBag for groceries, hitting the gym or going to the beach, the little pouch is perfect for your keys, phone or MP3 player.

Shagbags are made from 100% recyclable, tear-free, stain-free and water-resistant DuPont™ Tyvek®. This design will allow you to not only use your bags for years to come but to also feel confident that when it’s time to say goodbye it can be done safely and with the earth in mind.

Here is my Shagbag, loosely stuffed with standard groceries. As you can see it’s nowhere full but this is just to give you an idea of what can fit; 64 oz apple juice, box of No Pudge brownie mix, 16 oz spaghetti, box of cereal, box of granola bars, big jar of peanutbutter, bag of Somersaults snacks.

Again I could’ve fit so much more with little effort, the bag itself can tote up to 25lbs of goodies, whether it be groceries, new fabric store samples or baby toys for grandmas.

Shagbags are designed to be easily reused over and over. If it’s portable, accessible, crunchable, washable, lightweight, recyclable, durable, eco-friendly, soft and stylish, we will use it. Shop for Shagbags and jewelry and art in their Annapolis, MD showroom (local shopping for me) or online. At the reasonable price of $8 – $16 these would make a perfect stocking stuffer or gift for that person who has everything.

Contigo, REAL spill-proof mugs and cups

I’m like most parents out there, BUSY, and not just busy but always moving. This means that my morning coffee is ALWAYS in a travel mug, this makes it easier to get out the door if we have to go somewhere to just move room to room without spilling. Maybe because I used it so much my previous travel much didn’t quite work anymore. The lid didn’t click so it wasn’t spill proof anymore and if I didn’t thread it just right coffee ended up down the front of my clothes, often on my seatbelt in the car.

Contigo is offers a collection of stylish 100% leak proof and spill proof drink ware. These products aren’t just for coffee either, with a Hydration line that includes a BPA free 32-ounce co-polyester bottle the simplest of tasks, drinking water, can be done safely with less mess. The kiddos also have a selection of BPA-free big kid sippy mugs. Using the same patented AUTOSEAL technology as the adult cups, they are also spill and leak-proof in-between each sip. Just press the AUTOSEAL button to sip and release to automatically seal. Made for children aged 4-12. I recommend this age bracket. Shae can understand to press the button but her timing is a bit off plus her little fingers don’t fit all the way around to the button with the way she holds it.

I’ve been using the AUTOSEAL Stainless Steel Mug DAILY for a couple weeks now and I love it. It keeps my coffee hot for hours and the few times Shae has grabbed my mug there was no threat of her burning herself. The double walled structure keeps the outer layer normal temperatures while my coffee inside stays HOT. It’s contoured shape also makes the mug easy to hold especially with its 16-ounce capacity making it a bit on the large side.

If you are in the market for a true spill proof on the go mug then Contigo is definitely a safe choice. Not just because of the no-spill technology but also for the safe materials used in their construction.

NewWaveEnviro eco-friendly Review and Giveaway

So of course we started back to school shopping. Notebooks, pencils, crayons, binders and so much more were needed. Luckily the kids didn’t need backpacks but they did need lunch bags. Shaun actually went through 2 last year just from being so rough. Sabreena went the green route and used one of my compact reusable bags. It worked fine but everything was rolling around loose in the bag.

New Wave Enviro sent Sabreena a great alternative, a 100% bamboo lunch bag and stainless steel water bottle. Not only will she keep it green she do it a little easier too. This super soft expandable lunch bag is going to hold not just her lunch but the snack she needs after school while doing extra-curriculars plus the goodies she brings to share with her friends. Because it’s bamboo it’s naturally anti-bacterial, strong as steel and soft as silk.

New Wave Enviro provides a full line of eco-friendly products like a 1 liter stainless steel water bottle, corn-based reusable water bottles, water filtration products and other green living goods. Petroleum based plastic is filling up our landfills, sewers and streets plus releasing toxins into our water systems. New Wave Enviro has designed a complete line of reusable water bottles made from recyclable Eastar resin and biodegradable corn-based plastic.
Water filtration is where New Wave Enviro is got its green living start.

Chlorine gas was used extensively in WW1 as a chemical warfare agent. Today it is used in municipal water supplies to deliver water to our homes free of microscopic contaminants. However it serves no useful purpose on or in our bodies. New Wave designs, patents and manufactures water filters that remove harmful chlorine & other contaminants from shower, bath and drinking water at home and away from home.

New Wave Enviro manufactures drinking water filters, shower filters, bathtub filters and “on the go” filters for theirp corn-based reusable water bottle.

LobotoME Planners and Organizational tools

I like lists! Grocery lists, to-do lists, packing lists, meal planning lists, lists of all kinds are my friends. My lists make me feel organized, useful and on track with what’s going on in life. LobotoME is a collection of organizational & planning tools to get you through the busy day.

Jenny Newcomer created the momME weekly planner out of pure necessity. A list maker like me Jenny realized that having so many lists in different places for different reasons was just causing more stress and an eventual catastrophe waiting to happen. She combined all of her favorite things about list making in one handy dandy sheet for the week. She wants you to know that the momME planner is not for us that hate lists or refuse to be organized it’s for us moms that need to cram a whole lot of stuff in a short 24-hour window.

Lobotome also has a full line of individual list pads that have specific duties. Since a lot of my lists are on the computer I needed something that could come with me room to room during the day, upstairs at bedtime and in my purse when I need to leave the house. I’ve been using the List Me…Doodle Me pad and have to say it’s perfect. There is enough list space to write and plenty of doodle space for unrelated notes or swirlys and triangles when I’m talking on the phone. Other choices for your lifestyle are

Simple Shoes new Toddler Collection

I am back to talk about my favorite topic…SHOES! Kids shoes more specifically! Simple Shoes is an eco-friendly shoe company that makes shoes and bags out of recycled and sustainable materials like organic cotton and silk, natural rubber, eco certified leather and suede, recycled PET(clear plastic water and soda bottles) and recycled carpet padding. Simple Shoes is striving for 100% sustainability.

“Finding materials and processes that make our products sustainable is a method we call Green Toe. It isn’t a magic formula, or a cure. It is a compass that, we hope, points to a bright green future.”

Simple Shoes is launching a brand new collection of eco-friendly toddler shoes. Doodle, Poodle and Noodle are shoes that are not only healthy for your little one’s feet but they are meant to be comfortable and withstand the everyday grind of playground running, jumping and then washing. Yes I said washing, these shoes are machine washable!!!

Here is a rundown of the other cool earth friendly details
• Washable suede uppers from an eco-certified tannery (BLC/ISO 14001)
• Certified organic cotton flannel lining
• Natural rubber non marking outsoles
• Recycled PET and latex elastic laces
• 100% post consumer paper pulp foot forms
• Velcro closure (Poodle) or User friendly pull toggle (Noodle & Doodle)
• 100% post consumer paper pulp foot forms
• Ships in our state of the art/back to the future post consumer recycled box… Each size has a different animal on the box. Collect them all! Woof woof!

Let’s get back to the washable part. Thrown them in the washing machine, air dry and run a brush over the suede to keep them looking good. How awesome is that. We are outside almost every day so needless to say shoes and clothing take a beating. How great is it that Shae’s new shoes don’t have to look like I’ve dragged them around them park and sidewalk. Shae was lucky enough to receive a pair of Doodles (purple ash). The shoes went on easily as the simple toggle closure allowed me to open up the shoe wide enough to fit her chubby little feet. She wore them around the house for the rest of the day, no complaints and no strange pressure markings on her feet. We are glad to say that these shoes have passed the Shae test.

Because Simple Shoes is so excited to launch this great collection they are giving you a 10% discount on your first purchase using discount code “SimpleMommy” at checkout.

Cloth Diapering Basics and Happy Heiny One-Size Giveaway

For my next installment of the Preparing for Baby series I’m going to bring you something that is near and dear to my heart, CLOTH DIAPERING. While I’ve been cding Shae since she was a newborn I’m not an expert in all the types of diapers. My new friend Sherrie with Itty Bitty Baby Bunz has given a short and sweet breakdown of the styles and their benefits.

One of the greatest things about choosing to use a cloth diapering method for your child is all the options that are available to you. You truly get to find a system that works for your family’s needs simply because there are so many styles/kinds from which to choose. Unfortunately, all these choices can be quite daunting for families new to cloth. Here’s a quick rundown of what you will find when you decide to use cloth diapers on your child and a basic guide to help deliver you from the confusion:

4 basic types of cloth diapers to choose from
• All-in-One’s/All-in-Two’s
• Pockets
• Fitteds
• Prefolds/Flats

Benefits:
Needs a waterproof wrap/cover-Fitteds & Prefolds/Flats
Needs a special fastener-Fitteds & Prefolds/Flats
Needs inserts to work-Pockets
Has elastic legs/waist- Pockets, Fitteds & Prefolds/Flats
Easy to clean-All-in-One’s/All-in-Two’s, Pockets, Fitteds & Prefolds/Flats
Fast drying-Pockets, Fitteds & Prefolds/Flats
Easy to use-All-in-One’s/All-in-Two’s &Pockets
Available in colors/prints-All-in-One’s/All-in-Two’s, Pockets, Fitteds & Prefolds/Flats
Daddy/babysitter approved-All-in-One’s/All-in-Two’s &Pockets
Trim fit-All-in-One’s/All-in-Two’s & Pockets
Economical-Prefolds/Flats

And the winners are…..

Economic Award — Prefolds/Flats
At $20 a dozen plus a few bucks for covers and closures (pins or Snappis), you can effectively diaper your child from birth to potty learning for under $400 dollars. (Throw-away diapers can easily cost you this much in 6 months – eek!) NOTE: you do not need to purchase a huge set of covers because covers can be wiped clean during wet changes and reused.

Transition Award – All-in-1’s
All-in-One’s are exactly that – everything you need to diaper your child in one piece. They require no inserts, no pins and no covers to work properly. They are an excellent transition diaper from throw away to cloth.

Convenience Award – Pocket Diapers
With a just a little preparation (stuffing the insert into the diaper), pocket diapers are the perfect solution for busy families where dad, in-laws, daycares and/or babysitters take part in diapering baby. These diapers are easy to launder (quick drying because of the removable absorbent insert) and easy to place on your baby. Since they require an absorbent material inside the pocket to function properly, pocket diapers offer caregivers exciting options. Microfiber inserts can be used for a trim diaper or add a hemp or second microfiber insert for extra absorbency overnight or for heavy wetters. Prefolds, flats, or even microfiber towels all work in pocket diapers as inexpensive inserts. Extra bonus – never have to touch the wet/soiled diaper! Just shake the insert loose into your laundry pail or bag. No ICK factor!

If you have multiple children in diapers and don’t want to deal with grabbing the right size every time they need a change, a One-Size diaper might be a good option for your family. Or, if you have only one child but don’t wish to purchase a whole new stash of diapers each time your child grows, a One-Size diaper could be the answer for you. There are many different brands of One-Size diapers available; however, most of them work using a system of snaps or fasteners on the front of the diaper. These front adjusters allow you to select the appropriate rise for your child and in essence, grow with your child. One-Size diapers will accommodate most children through their potty learning years. What a savings! A wonderful option for the cloth diapering world, though, like any system, there are a few drawbacks. If you plan to use the same One-Size diaper for three kids, you may begin to see wear and tear by the second or third child. This breakdown of the fibers does not indicate poor craftsmanship or bad quality materials, but rather the effects of washing a garment multiple times a week, month after month. A second reason you may not wish to choose a One-Size diaper is due to the bulk factor. Most moms don’t mind to see the adorable waddle of a child in cloth, but some parents don’t care for the way clothing fits (or doesn’t fit) overtop of a bulky dipe. Especially when your child is a baby, there is excess cloth in a One-Size diaper – it’s waiting there patiently for when it will be needed in the coming months.

Whatever kind of cloth diapering system you choose, you can rest assured that you are doing a great thing on many fronts.
• you are reducing the amount of waste your family contributes to our landfills
• you are saving tons of money by not purchasing paper and plastic you will just throw away every few hours
• you are, in most cases, supporting small businesses and work-at-home moms
• most importantly, you are laying your baby’s delicate skin next to soft, breathable, chemical-free materials for 24 hours each day

One of our favorite One-Size diapers are Happy Heinys One-Size Pockets. With been using this one for over a month and it fits like no other one-size we’ve tried before. With 4 size settings and generous stretch in the elastic this diaper is sure to fit from infantcy through to potty training. As with other Happy Heiney’s I’ve used the outer color is vibrant, the inner liner is soft and resists staining and the aplix closure tabs stay flush against the diaper to deter little fingers from opening. A recent design change has added leg casings instead of the traditional fleece roll out at the legs. I love the look of the little fleece peek out but think the casings work better at containing messes. Itty Bitty Baby Bunz is currently reducing their price for the diapers without leg casings to snatch them up before they are gone.

To close out this fantastic Cloth Diaper Basics rundown Sherrie with Itty Bitty Baby Bunz is giving LookWhatMomFound readers the chance to win a Happy Heinys One-Size Diaper.

Winner Chosen…Happy Heinys cloth diaper GIVEAWAY

I like the Royal Blue Size L.

When I found out I was pregnant with Shae, to say it was a surprise is an understatement. I was living my baby fever through the mamas at Babytalkbio.com (now The Mamasphere) as they got pregnant, had babies, discussed cool new baby gear and best of all introduced me to cloth diapers. Cloth diapering was never a thought when Sabreena and Shaun were little but all of a sudden all of my “friends” were doing it. I even joked about “If I ever get pregnant again I’m going to cloth diaper”. Well it happened and I kept my promise.

I spent months researching what was going to right for us. We started with prefolds and fitteds with covers then moved to pockets and All-in-Ones from so many different companies and WAHMs. I’ve had some old-faithfuls and some that didn’t last and some that needed a few months till the fit was right. I’m always on the search for a great fitting diaper and I found two from Happy Heinys, the One-Size Pocket Diaper and a regular Pocket Diaper. I always considered Happy Heinys to be one of the “brand name” cloth diapers but never got around to trying them, no particular reason

Itty Bitty Baby Bunz offered me the chance to test these two diapers side by side. I use other One-Size diapers and overall haven’t been impressed in the last several months. Shae is a bottom heavy baby, chunky thighs and full booty, so we often get some butt crack due to the too-short rise. The Happy Heinys One-Size was fantastic. When I first opened them I immediately noticed the super stretch and WIDE aplix closure. These diapers fit so good, I honestly didn’t think I could get such a good fit with a one-size, they say fits newborn to 35 pounds but we are already hovering 32lbs and I see potential in lasting till potty training. The fit is trim, the inner fleece is buttery soft and the Hot Pink color is vibrant. The One-Size comes with 2 inserts, a full size and a small for when the diaper is snapped in the newborn or small setting. I use the small on top of the large insert as extra protection during nap-time.

The sized Pocket Diaper has also be a great addition in the rotation. Again a very trim fit with full booty coverage, super soft inner and bright colors and an extra large pocket opening to make stuffing quick. I choose aplix closure for easy diaper changes for Rob and Sabreena, yes Shae can get them off but I can stop that with bloomers or shorts. I actually prefer the custom fit with aplix (Velcro) closures and Happy Heinys have some of the widest tabs I’ve seen and better yet they lay flat. This makes it a little harder for Shae to pull them off, there aren’t corners sticking up begging for her attention. The regular pocket diapers do not come with inserts; this allows you to choose the style/material insert you prefer and also the absorption level. I use inserts I’ve accumulated or trifolded microfiber towels and I’ll snag the small insert from the One-Size for naptime or another booster we have on hand. We don’t do cloth at bedtime since she’s such a heavy wetter but Happy Heinys say they have tested for up to 12 hours or more for bedtime, I’m not ready to try that yet, maybe when she’s closer to potty training.

I’m glad I finally got to try out Happy Heinys but sad I waited so long. She is almost 2; I could’ve had that much more time to enjoy the great fit and no leak goodness!

Winner Chosen…The Safe Sippy review and Giveaway

Collins family said…

We started a compost pile and since I found out bpa is in cans, I am buying more fresh or frozen foods.

saywah_j@yahoo.com

Apparently I did all the wrong things with my first 2 kids: they used bottles till they were 2 years old, they ate fast food and they watched too much television. I’m hoping I’m doing a little better job this time around.

I now consider myself a pretty “green” parent and raising all of my kids healthier and smarter. We all now know of the dangers of BPA and toxins coming in contact with our food and drinks and affecting the health of our children. With this new information we made crucial changes in our lives. Introducing The Safe Sippy from Kid Basix was a safe and smart switch.

When The Safe Sippy first came in I was put off a little by its size, Shae drinks A LOT of water so I worried about having to refill it often but I haven’t really noticed a problem; maybe the shape is just a little deceiving since it holds 11ounces. You will notice that the mouthpiece is plastic but have no fear, it is constructed of plastic certified free of BPA, phthalates and DEHA. While we don’t need them I noticed the handles will provide a helpful hold for younger toddlers, even older babies. I haven’t experienced leaks, the valve has a pretty tight fit so far. There is a silicone seal in the lid that can move around or fall off which can cause the lid not to fit properly so I check that often. So far I’m very impressed with the construction of The Safe Sippy. Shae really likes it too; she calls it her cold cup since the stainless steel is cool to the touch when I fill it with ice water.

The Safe Sippy is giving you guys the chance to win a 3-pack for your little ones.

VISIT TheSafeSippy and then tell me what “green” changes you are making in your eating/drinking habits!
