I’ve talked about it many times how my family has made changes over the years to be more green. A lot of my choices were obvious like recycling but some were made doing research. The Dirty Dozen

A goal of the new year is to get back to healthier eating. We’ve always done pretty good but I’ve gotten lazy and also bored with our tried and true recipes. Nothing sounds appealing anymore. My mission is to come up with some new recipes or revamp our existing goodies.

To start I researched the foods we should and shouldn’t be eating. We’ve never fully gone organic but I need to be more conscious of what goes into our bodies. Below is a list of the Dirty Dozen; the list of produce that should be avoided unless grown organically. Pesticides and herbicides are toxic and can’t just be rinsed off.
fruits
• Celery- with no skin to protect it, celery is one of the most contaminated veggies out there
• Peaches- it’s skin get sprayed with pesticides to keep insects away
• Strawberries
• Apples
• Blueberries
• Nectarines
• Bell Peppers
• Spinach
• Kale
• Cherries
• Potatoes
• Grapes (Imported)

Local farms, farm stands, farmers markets and things like that are your best bet. While most farms and orchards are certified organic many of them utilize the same practices. The certification process is expensive but just ask questions. Farm to table is the healthiest, freshest and usually tastiest way to eat.

Holiday Wishlist 2010 – Magic Cabin $50 Giveaway

Little kids toys should be entertaining but also educational but of course not over stimulating. Magic Cabin is a go-to source for just these products. Magic Cabin has been guided by the simple notion that children’s lives are enriched by ample time for open-ended, creative, imaginative play.

We are a fan of these type of toys, toys that don’t require batteries, toys that require kid-power and toys whose play isn’t dictated by a character on tv. Yes we love our electronics and gadgets and video games but we also love our downtime play where imaginations are used and the sky is the limit.

I’ve known about Magic Cabin for many years as the Fairy place. These fairies are cherished by children all over and for good reason they are handcrafted and adorable. The dolls and Kathe Kruse® of Germany are all lovingly made to last a lifetime of hugs and cuddles.

We got the chance to review a couple baby & toddler toys for my nieces. The Stacking Cups are soft enough for the littlest ones but sturdy enough for the little learners and who doesn’t love a gnome.

Wooden pull toys were always Shae’s favorite, that’s why we choose the Holgate Mail Truck Shape Sorter as a gift for one of the 1 year olds. It’s chunky shapes fit well into her hands and the lid pops off for easy access.

Back to School Seventh Generation Cleaning Kit Giveaway-CLOSED

With the kids going back to school in couple short weeks they’ll be bringing home more than just test scores. According to the CDC nearly 22 million school days are missed each year due to the common cold and flu. It’s time to fight back without destroying the planet. Seventh Generation’s complete line of cleaning supplies are a natural, non-toxic solution to bleaches and other harmful disinfectants. Using botanicals is a clean way to kill germs and wash away dirt on a daily basis.

This school year, Seventh Generation is sharing tips from best-selling author and pediatrician, Dr. Alan Greene, to help parents protect their child’s health during back-to-school season. Dr. Greene suggests taking the following precautions:

Optimize the immune system

  • Reap the benefits of probiotics like those found in yogurt. A recent study showed that children who received enough probiotics daily throughout the cold and flu season had a significant reduction in the number of illnesses they had and, when they did get sick, the symptoms were both milder and didn’t last as long.
  • Be sure your child is getting plenty of vitamin D from the sun, from food, or from a supplement.
  • Build a strong foundation. Good food, good sleep, and good physical activity all help the immune system to flourish.

Be wise about reducing unnecessary exposure to harmful germs

  • Teach children the key times to clean their hands in the classroom. The most important times include after sneezing, coughing or using the restroom, upon leaving “high-risk” places (recess, naptime, play stations) and before meals or snacks.
  • Sixty percent of teachers surveyed said that they request that parents donate disinfecting wipes to the classroom. Seventh Generation’s disinfecting wipes kill 99.99% of germs* naturally using the active ingredient thyme, a component of thyme oil which is derived from the herb thyme.
  • Stress the importance of not touching their eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • Demonstrate to your children how to cover their mouth and nose for every cough and sneeze. This simple maneuver has spectacular results in decreasing the spread of viruses and bacteria floating about the room, waiting to be inhaled.

Start the school year off on the right foot with a Seventh Generation “Back-to-School” kit that includes everything shown in the picture above. We received one as part of this promotion and I set it aside to provide to Shaun’s new teacher. Win a whole kit for yourself or to donate to your child’s school. Visit Seventh Generation and come back and tell me another product you would like to try in your own home.

Spa results from Aromafloria’s For Feet’s Sake

My feet are a wreck this summer; It doesn’t help that I walk barefoot around the house, in the yard, in the garage, at the pool, on the sidewalk, etc. I have my trusty dead skin shaver that really helps but I’ve never done anything beyond that. Aromafloria’s For Feet’s Sake collection is exactly what my feet never knew they needed.

Aromafloria is a natural, eco-friendly beauty, home and bath company focusing on essential oils, minerals, herbs and botanicals. For over 25 years they’ve been bringing nature into the lives of many customers. They believe
…wellness is a state of mind
…the sense of smell is a vital key in well being
…in the restorative power of a bath
…that art and science are converging beautifully

All of this means that a more holistic and natural approach to everyday living will result in a more peaceful, stress-free and harmonious attitude and overall outlook. How do you feel when you come out of a spa, moments after your massage or pedicure? Relaxed and cheerful right! Aromafloria is giving us that effect in our own home.

I’ve been using the entire For Feet’s Sake collection for a couple weeks now. It’s not an overnight change but I’ve been very pleased with the progress. I’ve even learned to wear socks around the house so I’m not wasting my time tending to the tootsies. The Refreshing Spa Foot & Leg Mist is a pleasant surprise. I at first thought it was going to be a useless product, just a scented water but it softens and relaxes not just my feet but my legs. I use this up to my knees after shaving and there is no burning or redness. The scrub I need to get used to though. It doesn’t have a creamy enough texture or base to spread the way I want all over my feet. Directions day about a tablespoon amount per foot but I feel I need a lot more to really get all over. I’m going to try a different method the next time, maybe less water will work better.

Whether for your home or hands Aromafloria is a successful tool in aroma-therapy, de-stressing and quality pampering.

Seventh Generation Cleaning Kit Recap

Green cleaning starts with non-toxic products without losing their ability to kill germs and remove dirt and grime. Seventh Generation is a leader in the manufacturing of eco-conscious and sustainable home and family care products. I knew about their baby care items when Shae was a baby but we cloth diapered her so I didn’t need chlorine free/dye free diapers. Now they have a complete cleaning selection that covers the kitchen, bath and laundry.
I’ve been considering some of these products over the last couple weeks and have liked the results so far. The one thing I don’t like is the after smell of the Lemongrass and Thyme Disinfecting cleaners and wipes. It starts off just fine with a natural woodsy scent but the lingering smell is too strong and almost chemical like. If they could do a more citrus smell I’d be all over it.
Regardless of my dislike of the smell Seventh Generation disinfecting cleaners they do kill over 99.99% of household germs, specifically: Influenza A, H1N1, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella enterica, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli on hard, nonporous surfaces. With kids in the house and their sometimes lack of hygiene and manners this is a HUGE bonus.
Seventh Generation operates with a very clear focus.
The Change We Want to See

  • Restore the environment
  • Inspire conscious consumption
  • Create a just and equitable world

The Different Way We Operate

  • Systems thinking
  • Radical transparency
  • Influence beyond our size

These things make Seventh Generation different than other household cleaning products. From the very beginning, Seventh Generation has pushed to have a real impact on competitors, suppliers, communities, and government. Products may be the vehicle, but far-reaching, genuine change is the mission.
Seventh Generation is offering LookWhatMomFound…and Dad too! readers the chance to win a complete cleaning kit to celebrate Earth Day. The kit includes:

  • Disinfecting Multi-Surface Cleaner
  • Disinfecting Bathroom Cleaner
  • Disinfecting Wipes
  • Two rolls of 100% recycled brown unbleached paper towels
  • The Conscious Kitchen a book Alexandra Zissu
  • A handy Cleaning Caddy made from recycled plastic

To enter visit Seventh Generation and tell me something you have learned about the company.

Spa days are popular Valentine’s Day Gifts but when the treatment is over what do you do? Castle Bath Spa Products is here to save the day by offering high quality, natural products to use right in your own home. Their products are:

  • Natural
  • Pure
  • Made to Order, as fresh as possible

  • Handmade- never factory or machine made
  • Shipped daily to preserve the shelf life

I received a gift basket containing products from the Sweet Communion Fragrance collection. The day received my basket I knew I needed to try I out right away. Bedtime approached I took my basket and headed to the bath where I indulged in a long hot bath filled with Dead Sea Salts. Lavender products to me tend to have a very strong almost medicinal scent but Castle Bath Spa Products smelled sweeter, less earthy more fragrant. I do wish the jar has “instructions” for how much to put in a bath, I added about a handful for a full regular tub and it seemed fine, not too strong of a scent.

After the bath I then sprayed my entire body with Body Lotion Spray, a very light but sweetly fragrant formulation. Lavender is a soothing scent, meant to help distress and calm, very good for bedtime but I’m using the lotion after my morning showers too, it just smells that good.

Win your very own Sweet Communion gift basket from Castle Bath Spa Products to indulge in a romantic in-home spa day with your sweetie. Visit Castle Bath Spa Products and tell me another collection that you would love to try.

Eden Home Organic, Study and In-home Spa Treatment

Where do you turn to shop for natural and eco-friendly bedding, clothing, baby products and everything else for your home?

Eden Home is the one place to find a complete selection of organic, all-natural and eco-friendly products for your home and life that won’t have you compromising your sense of style. Many of the so-called “organic” and “natural” products sold today are either not pure or not beautiful. So Eden Home was started to offer healthy choices ranging from organic clothes for baby to natural bath towels, from organic cookware to all natural shampoos.

When I was approached by Eden Home I was 1st pleased by the lovely design and easy to navigate site. Next I was amazed at the large selection of everything under the sun. I really enjoyed the variety of kids and baby gear: from organic clothes to natural toys to natural skincare to BPA-free feeding tools. Bedding and Clothing is where I made my first stops. Bamboo sheets are my new favorite indulgence in the bedroom but bamboo clothing is my new favorite personal indulgence. There is something special about the feel of organic bamboo and cotton, the result is silkiness against the skin with no pilling, snags or misshaping.

I was able to ANALYSE a pair of comfy Blue Canoe easy style pants. Easy is a perfect word for these stretchy wide-legged lounge pants. I got the Cognac color thinking it would be brown, I was wrong it had a warm cocoa/rust color, different from what I was expecting but still a pretty.
I would love to try out the unique cooking tools available. The La Chamba Clay Pot collection is truly one-of-a-kind. Made in Colombia not very differently than previous centuries these clay pots are hand formed and free of glazes and lead.

Look around Eden Home for yourself and tell me what green changes you want to make for your home for your chance to win a Bath/Spa Treatment gift basket for a natural destress in your own home.
