Brighter Birthdays: Make Your Child Feel LIke a Superstar on Their Special Day

Who loves celebrating birthdays more than children?  When it’s time to celebrate your child’s birthday, all bets are off.  You want it to be a day they will always remember.  Of course, your child is going to be thrilled it’s their birthday anyway, but if you want them to feel like a superstar, then you have to prepare and execute.  Here’s how to create brighter birthdays!

Room of Balloons

This idea takes a bit of preparation and covert operation, but if you can pull it off, it will make their day special from the second they wake.  Fill a load of balloons with helium, and while your child is asleep, slip the barrage of balloons in their room.  Imagine the pleasant look of shock on their face when they wake up to a ceiling filled with birthday balloons!  Alternatively, fill another space such as their bathroom or playroom, which may be easier to do than trying to get balloons in their bedroom while they’re sleeping.

Birthday in Bed

Assuming you can get up before your child and their newfound level of excitement, you can concoct a birthday breakfast and deliver it to them while they are still in bed.  Of course, eating in bed is regularly discouraged but it’s their birthday; a reason for special exceptions.  Alternatively, you can grant them with a menu upon waking so they may choose among a list of beloved breakfasts.

Printed Announcement

In today’s digital age, print is not usually the first place people go to make announcements.  It’s become the norm for people to announce children’s birthdays via Facebook or other chosen social channel.  However, kids get a kick out of seeing their name in traditional print.  Take out an ad in the local paper, wishing your child a special birthday.  Plus, it gives your child opportunity to gloat amongst their teachers, friends, and neighbors.  To add to the print theme, get additional ideas from Zoey’s Attic.

Day Off

If your child’s birthday falls on a school day, consider giving them the day off and taking the day off of work.  This may not be realistic for both or either parent but a day of hooky with one’s parent is exciting for the child.  Depending on the season, plan a day around being inside or outside.  Depending on your child’s preferences, take them to the playground, an amusement park, to see their grandparents, etc.  Any kid gets thrilled over missing a day of school but it usually means they’re sick.  However, getting a day off on your birthday is totally cool!

Rite of Passage

Regardless of time or culture, children adopt more responsibilities as they grow older.  Depending on their age, grant them an additional right so that they associate their birthday with actually maturing.  For example, extend their curfew or how long they can stay awake before bedtime.  Alternatively, now they may be old enough to get a puppy or play a particular sport.

Professed Love

Write your child a letter telling them know how much you love them and how proud you are of their progression and accomplishments.  To make it even more special, use specific incidents to point out their gifts rather than generally professing your love and pride.  It may be that they are thoughtful toward others and get the mail for an elderly neighbor, or maybe your child is an exceptional student and receives straight A’s on their report card.  Alternatively, you could record a sound byte or video and put it on YouTube so your child can view it online always.

Taught Lesson

Your child has a lot of people’s attention on their birthday.  Similarly, you’re going to have theirs since you’ll be spending time with them.  It’s a great opportunity to teach them valuable life lessons.  For example, there can never be too much kindness in the world.  Around the time of your child’s birthday, survey their belongings with them.  Go through their clothes, toys, and other possessions.  Suggest they donate some belongings to Goodwill or another local charity.  Teach them that it’s important to give to others in need, those who may need things more than us.  Of course, good people should be rewarded, so your child’s charity should parlay into receiving their own birthday gifts.

Special Guest

Consider inviting a special guest to pay their wishes to your child or come see them on their special day.  For example, a variety of professional sports teams’ PR departments may schedule players or a mascot to appear at a birthday party.  It may come at a price, but imagine how thrilled your child would be when they’re paid a visit by a comic book hero, sports figure, cartoon character, etc.

Everyone Needs Some Help Sometime

Everyone needs a little help at some point in their life. Life can throw us some curveballs but sometimes people don’t always handle it properly. Work, home life, family and friends can be triggers for behaviors that we aren’t always proud of but there are others out their willing and able and trained to help.

Treatment Centers are available for all types of illness, disorder and diagnosis. Seeking a professional opinion first is most important. Self diagnosing is never a good choice.

According to a report published by the Journal of the American Medical Association*:

  • Thirty-seven percent of alcohol abusers and 53 percent of drug abusers also have at least one serious mental illness.
  • Of all people diagnosed as mentally ill, 29 percent abuse either alcohol or drugs.

If you think you have a problem, addition, dependency take a few moments to answer the following questions. The results could change your life forever.

1. Do you use drugs or alcohol on a regular basis (one day or more per week)?
2. Have you ever missed work, school or an appointment because of your drug or alcohol use?
3. Do most of the people in your life use drugs or alcohol on a regular basis?
4. Have you ever abused prescription drugs or used them for recreational purposes?
5. Have you ever tried to quit using alcohol or drugs and been unable to?
6. Have you ever experienced a blackout from drug or alcohol use?
7. Do you find yourself apologizing for your behavior when you have used drugs or alcohol?
8. Do you ever drink or use drugs by yourself?
9. Do your family or friends voice concerns about your drug or alcohol use?
10. Do you find yourself including drugs and alcohol in your recreational activities?
11. Do you ever find yourself using alcohol or drugs first thing in the morning to take the edge off?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you or someone you know may have a serious problem with drugs or alcohol.

Help can be found in many places. Spiritual advisors, school counselors, support groups and rehab centers are the best options. Friends and family should be supportive and uplifting and willing to help you get the help you need.

Vacation Home – Part II

So part two of Melinda’s post about owning our own vacation home came to a harsh reality this past Friday. After speaking to a few people we decided owning our own cottage might not be the right move for us at this time. There were a few factors that made us make this decision.

What is crazy is for the past two to three years Melinda and I have looked into getting some kind of vacation home at the Jersey shore and we are now thinking maybe an RV or camper might be the answer. Problem with this is I have no vehicle to pull a camper. We own a minivan and a Chevy HHR and neither of them are able to handle a camper. I could get a used truck that would be used to just pull a camper but then I have to find a place to store a camper. I could use a storage facility that offers RV storage but that seems like a huge pain to me because every time we want to take a trip I need to go and get the camper. Maybe we will buy something that can be left permanently on a lot, who knows. I don’t want to jump into anything too fast without thought because we are caught up in the moment and possibly get burnt.  Buying something that we plan to use year after year for vacationing is a huge commitment and a decision that we are thinking through slowly.  Hopefully we can and will make a decision in the next year or so because I would really like to have a vacation home down at the beach as this is something Melinda and I have always dreamed about.

Desk – Yes or No? That Is The Question

I think this would look nice in the corner of our living room

Melinda and I have been in talks for over a year about whether or not we need a computer desk. We have a little nook in our living room where we could fit a nice little desk.

I think if we had a desk in the living room we would be more productive because believe it or not sitting on the couch and working/blogging gets uncomfortable sometimes. I recently looked at Bush furniture computer desks and they are pretty nice and there are a lot of desks to choose from. Bush offers nice office furniture and business furniture so it doesn’t matter if you are looking for something for home or the office you are sure to find something.

On the flip side I don’t want anything to big that might junk up the room because currently our living room looks nice and symmetrical and another piece of furniture could throw that off.  Yes I mentioned how the room looks good to the eye, LOL.  This has been a long time in the making.  For years we have had toy boxes and toys ALL over the living room floor but now that the kids are getting a little older they are able to clean up and put their toys away.    I thought this day would never come and now that is has it is hard to put additional items in the living room for the fear that it might not look good.

I think I am obsessing over this!!!!  That is what I seem to do often. LOL.

Do you have a desk where you work at?  Do you feel more productive at your desk over say the couch or kitchen table?

Do Men Really Care?

Before I met Melinda which was about 10 years ago I didn’t care about any kind of furniture especially bedroom furniture. My thinking was as long as I had a place to sit and sleep I was golden but realized over time Melinda felt differently and she also changed my thinking as well.

When we first got married we spent a lot of time looking at beds and nightstands as well as dressers. Being that we were somewhat young and just married we decided that Ikea had nice furniture at good prices and decided on a nice nature wood set. At the time I thought we would have this furniture for a few years and then buy a new set but the funny thing is this Ikea set lasted us about 8 years. Actually we still have the nightstands and one of the original dressers which Shaun uses to this day. Over the years we have upgraded a few of the dressers and just recently replaced the Ikea bed with a nice new chocolate wood bed with matching headboard, footboard and side rails. I am actually surprised the Ikea bed lasted so long especially with all of the times we have moved but our last move proved fatal and our Ikea bed didn’t make it from Maryland to Delaware. RIP Ikea bed.

It is crazy to me that we owed bedroom furniture for 8 years. I have never owned anything that long not even a car but I am getting close to achieving that goal as well. LOL.

How old is your bedroom furniture? Do you keep your sets for a long time or upgrade often?

An Almost Do It Yourself Project

I really like this headboard!

A few moths ago Melinda had this grand idea that she wanted to upholster our old wooden headboard that we got from Ikea about 8 years ago. Now I am no expert in this matter by any means but upholstered headboards when done by a professional look really good. Not saying Melinda wouldn’t do a great job but I was a little hesitant at her taking on this task herself.

To me headboards are the center piece of the bed and the first thing that is noticed when you enter the bedroom so you want to make sure whatever kind of headboard you have that is looks really nice. After some thought Melinda decided that is was just easier to buy a new headboard and our search began. We looked at upholstered headboards, wooden headboards and even king headboards thinking maybe we would upgrade our bed size which we didn’t do (Not yet anyway).

We did buy a new bed and it is a really nice wooden one with matching headboard, footboard and side rails in queen size for now. I think our next bed is going to be a sleep number king bed. Not sure if that is what Melinda wants but if I get any input this is what I am voting for? I want to find out what my sleep number is, LOL.

Would you ever try to upholster your furniture like a headboard or maybe dining room chairs? Seems hard as heck to me.

What Are You Getting Your Dad For Father’s Day

In case you didn’t know Father’s Day is next Sunday and after visiting my local Wal-Mart on Friday I found a lot of cool electronics that I will be putting on my Father’s Day wish list.

Would love this iPad 2

We have a nice HDTV but this 55 inch Vizio would look nice in our house

Most dads are interested in electronic gadgets so why not get them a new HDTV, iPad 2 or even surround sound. These three items are on my Father’s Day wish list in additional to a new laptop. Every one of these items is available at Wal-Mart which is a good thing because there is one very close to my house that we shop at often. I’m not saying that I will get any of these items but at least Melinda and the kids know what I am interested in once Father’s Day rolls around.

New surround sound would be awesome!

Could always use a new laptop. LOL.

I am a very technical person who is into gadgets so Melinda and the kids have a pretty easy time getting me gifts on Father’s Day but my dad wasn’t always so easy. I remember growing up never really knowing what to get my father for Father’s Day other then the same old tie and coffee cup. Now that he has gotten older he has become a little more technically advanced and into gadgets so it is a little easier to get him a gift now. Now that I know Wal-Mart has a huge electronics section that is where I will be shopping this Father’s day for my dad.

If you have a dad on your list that is into electronics like DVD’s, TV’s, gaming systems, etc be sure to check out Wal-Mart’s huge selection and you will certainly have a very happy dad this Father’s Day!

I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour by Dad Central Consulting on behalf of Walmart and received a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.

Flip Flops made with a conscious

Just last week was perfect spring weather. We were enjoying bright blue skies, a shining sun and a blowing breeze throw all of the open windows. These hopeful signs mean I can break out my flip flops and store my warm fuzzy slippers and socks.
Havainana’s womens sandals and mens sandals are great expressions of personality while being simple and social responsible. All Havaiana sandals are produced in one location in Campina Grande, Brazil. This factory is one of the city’s largest employers. Their socially and environmentally conscious efforts include reduction of water usage and electricity, recycling of residual materials, development of sensible products and environmental education to all employees.
havaianas- womens-sandalsThere is a lot of good going on behind the scenes but don’t forget about the end result; cool sandals and shoes for men and women. Trendy designs, sleek colors and inspired prints are hot this season. These SLIM MATRYOSHKA women’s flip flops are totally my style. With a tad higher price tag of $30 these are a limited edition print. But the typical price is usually $22 for equally stylish options. Kids can sport Havaiana’s too! The selection might not be as plentiful but they are still cute and perfect for warm weather.
