Philadelphia Wings Lacrosse Giveaway

The Philadelphia Wings are a member of the National Lacrosse League, a professional box lacrosse league in North America. They play at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Philadelphia Wings #philly #sports

If you’re unfamiliar with Lacrosse think fast paced soccer played with sticks instead of feet with lots and lots of body contact. Lacrosse is an aggressive sport not meant for the faint of heart. This hard hitting game doesn’t lack on thrill and excitement. Shaun started playing last spring and loved it but came home battered and bruised but also more fit and energized than ever.

shaun lacrosse

The Philadelphia Wings started their 2014 season with a 17-13 win on the road against their East Division rival Buffalo Bandits. Their home opener on January 12th has them facing off against the Buffalo Bandits again.

Winterize Your Home plus Eagles Prize Pack Giveaway

It’s cold outside today, at least in my neck of the woods. Our thermostat tends to stay in one spot but some days it needs some adjusting. NRG Residential Solutions wants me to share some winter efficiency tips to help you all get through your cold weather season comfortably and within budget.

Cooler temperatures signal the change of the season and a time to enjoy some of our favorite traditions. As leaves change and crisp days offer the perfect backdrop for tossing the football, cooler temps are not only a relief but also a reminder that now is a great time to prep our homes for the winter months ahead.

  •  Tune-up before you turn up the heat. A poorly functioning furnace can be an inconvenience, more importantly; it can be dangerous if left undetected. A qualified HVAC expert can help you inspect and maintain the key components of your system, including:
    • Chimneys and Fireplaces – Inspect and repair issues before colder temperatures set in. Make sure the flue damper works properly on your wood-burning fireplace so you can keep it closed when the fireplace is not in use.
    • Filters – Often one of the easiest things to check and change, filters act like lungs to keep the air in your home clean and pure. Replacing “congested” filters helps make sure that your system is not working overtime, using more energy than necessary, to do its job.
    • Fuel Lines – Last but not least, make sure a qualified expert checks all fuel lines for safety and functionality.
  • Seal up the house. According to The Department of Energy, by reducing drafts in a home, energy savings can range from 5% to 30% per year, and the home is generally much more comfortable afterward. Check and replace the seals in your house, especially doors to the basement and attic. Try sliding a piece of paper through the crevice between the door and the frame; if it slips through, it’s time to replace the seal.
  • Be energy smart about heating up. Once you’ve done everything to keep the heat in your house, it’s time to be smart about how you keep warm at home. Combining technology with some tried-and-true tools will go a long way to maximize energy efficiency. For instance:
    • Invest in learning. According to the Consumer Energy Center, even installing and setting a basic programmable can lower electricity bills by 10 percent. The next evolution beyond traditional programmable thermostats, newer versions, such as the Nest Learning Thermostat™ help set your home’s temperature efficiently by learning your patterns and helping ensure that you are not using energy unnecessarily when you don’t need to. The learning thermostat will learn your schedule and adjust itself automatically. You can even use a smartphone app to adjust the thermostat so your home is comfortably heated when you come back from work. While this technology sells for $249 at most home improvement stores, some energy providers, including NRG Residential Solutions, offer it for free as part of a plan that is designed to promote energy conservation.
    • Smart ways to keep cozy. Space heaters might be an obvious way to turn up the heat, but they can use a lot of energy and could potentially be a safety risk. If you’re one of those people who need to be extra toasty, consider energy efficient items like an electric blanket to stay warm instead. Don’t forget to take advantage of heat generated by the sun simply by opening blinds and curtains during the day to let the sunshine in.
    • Keep hot air from rising. When turning back the clock in the fall, turn fans clockwise for the winter to redirect air toward the living space, making the most of the warm air in the house.

Heating your home is one of the biggest expenses during the cooler months ahead. These simple steps can help make sure you are doing everything you can to be energy smart while still staying cozy during the winter months.

Consignment Shopping Haul at #JBFPhilly

Since high school I’ve shopped thrift stores for clothes & jackets. These days I’ve expanded my frugal shopping to also include yard sales and consignment stores. My best hauls have come from Just Between Friends Western Mainline Consignment Sales. The 2 women that run this (and Reading) shopping know what families want and need and put on the best sale in the area. Unfortunately you missed the sale in Philadelphia/Mainline but Reading is coming up soon.

JBF Reading

Friday, Sept 27 9am-7pm
Saturday, Sept 28 8am-5pm HALF OFF DAY
Admission is $2 on Thursday ONLY
https://www.facebook.com/jbfphilly

I went to the Western Mainline sale in the day it opened and left with so many great deals my friends were jealous. Some of my favorite buys were a wooden doll crib with underneath storage for $6, a navy polka dot trench coat for Shae for $10 and Nick and Nora sock monkey jammies for $6.

Shopping Haul #bestdeal #jbfphillyI went with a few rules in mind. These are how I’m able to shop smart and efficiently.

  • Be prepared. Know your children’s clothing and shoe sizes. Find out if they need things like winter coats, sneakers and other basics.
  • Bring something to carry your haul. Large tote bags, laundry baskets, shopping baskets, etc.
  • If you like it, grab it because it might not be there when you circle back in 15 minutes.
  • Shop with outfits in mind. The worst thing to do is getting an adorably pattern piece home with nothing to match it. It will just sit in a drawer.
  • Sort through your haul before checking out. Ask yourself “Would I buy that in a retail store?”
  • Make sure buttons are attached, zippers go up, down AND lock, drawstrings are intact and seams aren’t ripped. Review hems, sleeves, collars and armpits for stains or holes.
  • Inspect baby gear for loose screws, chipped paint, missing pieces. Use your smartphone to check recall lists or reviews.
  • Be comfortable. Shopping can be hard work especially when you are hauling piles of clothing around. Leave the heavy handbag at home.

Use these tips to achieve a successful and fruitful shopping trip. Now see below for the list of things I bought. I spent $170. It sounds like a lot but Shae pretty much got a whole new winter wardrobe and Shaun got 2 winter coats, one for school one for play. Now let’s hope we get some snow.

Major League Lacrosse Championship ticket #giveaway

If you are a kinda regular reader here you might know that Shaun played his first season of Lacrosse this past spring. It was a different experience than football last fall. An incredibly positive and energizing experience. No wonder why I was all geeked out when I got the email to attend the Major League Lacrosse Championship later this month.

shaun lacrosse

MLL is comprised of eight teams across the US and Canada. The Boston Cannons, Chesapeake Bayhawks (formerly Baltimore and Washington), New York Lizards (formally Long Island) and Rochester Rattlers are original teams starting in 2001. The Denver Outlaws began play in 2006 as part of the League’s western expansion. The Hamilton Nationals (formerly Toronto) joined MLL in 2009 as the League’s first international team. The Charlotte Hounds and Ohio Machine began play in 2012 as a part of the League’s expansion initiative to have 16 teams in the next decade.

Major League Lacrosse began play in 2001 to capitalize on the growing demand for world-class field lacrosse driven by dramatic growth in the U.S. lacrosse market. The MLL was praised and heralded for its on-field play, regarded as the best ever seen. With a year-on-year attendance increase, Major League Lacrosse has continued to lead the sport of lacrosse into the mainstream of competitive team sports.

We are seeing a growth of popularity in our area and hopefully this will continue as Shaun continues with athletics during his school days.

The Major League Lacrosse Championships are being held in Philadelphia at PPL Park where the Philadelphia Union (soccer) currently play.

Major League Lacrosse Championship

The weekend will begin with the semifinals on Saturday, Aug. 24 (1:00pm & 4:00pm), followed by the final on Sunday, Aug. 25 (3:00pm). The event will also feature the MLL Fan Zone an interactive area with fun and games for lacrosse fans of all ages.

Get a discount on your ticket purchase just by using code “MOMMLL” for $5 off each ticket, prices range from $43-$53 each.

We are giving away a 4-pack of tickets for the Finals on August 25th, 3:00pm. To enter just tell me what other sporting events have you attended in the past.

A Visit with #MightyMike Adventure Aquarium

Finding things to do for the entire family is sometimes hard.  With the kids being such a wide range of ages I’m bound to have a bored one on my hands at some point during an outing.  There are always exceptions to the rule though.  Adventure Aquarium in Camden, NJ always gets the kids excited head out the door.

With two million gallons of fun, seven different touch exhibits, the countries only aquarium wtih a Great Hammerhead Sharks,  40-foot suspended Shark Tunnel,  a 4D Theater and free live shows and up-close animal experiences daily, and it’s clear to see why a trip to Adventure Aquarium promises to deliver family memories that will last a lifetime.

Adventure Aquarium

We made our way over the Adventure Aquarium to visit Mighty Mike, a 14 foot, 800lb alligator.  Mighty Mike is said to be the BIGGEST alligator on display outside of their home state of Florida.  His exhibit allows visitors to get right up close, almost eye to eye while remaining safe behind the glass.

Mighty Mike Alligator Adventure Aquarium

The Stingray Beach Club was the most popular exhibit for this visit. The last time we went to Adventure Aquarium Shae and Shaun were scared to touch the stingrays.  This time around I couldn’t get them out of the area to see the rest of the sea creatures.  Honestly I couldn’t keep their hands out of all the touch exhibits.

As my kids get older I’m finding that they appreciate these outings and events more. The educational tips  and facts they learn along the way are tucked away for use later on like a quiz for dad or mom-mom and pop-pop.

If you happen to be in the Philadelphia/South Jersey area Adventure Aquarium is a definite family friendly stop you don’t want to miss.

Previewing #ArtSplash at @PhilaMuseum of Art

Arts and crafts is important in our  home.  I love letting my kids explore and express their feelings, emotions and moods with their hands and imaginations.  I try to keep different mediums on hand at all times so there isn’t anything in their way to stop them from creating.

Exposing them to other forms of art and literature is a great way to open up the floodgates of imagination and conversation.

This summer the Philadelphia Museum of Art is representing Art Splash, a season filled with art, imaginative installations and creative play.  We got a sneak peak of what they have to offer and were able to get hands on with displays, artists and activities.

Shae worked on a paper Mannequin. She was given markers, stamps and fabric scraps. I see a future fashionista on our hands; dontcha love how the hat has a little attitude with the tilt.

Each week Art Splash will be offering new theme with appropriate exhibits, tours and play to fit a wide range of children’s ages.  This program is free for children after general museum admission. Opening weekend is June 28-30 with Make a Splash theme.

Create, Play, and Explore All Day!
Perfect for all ages

Free after admission

Stop by Art Splash anytime to CREATE in the Splash Studio, PLAY in the Art in Action zone, or EXPLORE the exhibitions. Mini-tours with one of our Museum educators could “pop up” any time and art-making is ongoing every day.

This is just the start. Check out the entire schedule at http://www.philamuseum.org/artsplash

We were able to get a sneak peek before it opened to the public.

Candy Coated Wonderland is unique and whimsical installation from candy Coated, a Philadelphia based artist. Her use of screen printing, vinyl cut outs and ceramic gems are the backdrop for a collection of historic dress costumes.   The mannequins are posed in fairy tale and nursery rhyme settings.

All Dressed Up : Fashions for Children and their Families was a peek inside how children in the 1800s dressed for play and everyday.  We learned that children emulated the adult because they were being raised to have the same manners and behaviors as adults.  Their clothing resembled each other’s very closely.  This exhibit also boasts a large drawing table to encourage children to design their own fashions from the garments they see or from books available on display.

Museums all over the world are open to provide inspiration, hands-on experiences and programs for the community. We are lucky to have The Philadelphia Museum of Art right in our backyard.

Mohawk #LicensetoSpill Tour Philadelphia #cbias

I am a member of the Collective Bias® Social Fabric® Community. This shop has been compensated as part of a social shopper insights study for Collective Bias and their client.

This past weekend I was invited to visit the 9th Street Italian Market Festival. The Italian Market in Philadelphia is the nation’s largest outdoor market. On any given day your senses will be assaulted by the rainbow of colorful produce, the scent of baked goods and coffee and the variety of fresh seafood and meats at the butcher shops.

The Italian Market Festival is a gathering of the entire community to celebrate with music, food, shopping and crafts. We were able to be an Italian for a day with food from Chef Peter McAndrews of Paesanos and pastries from Isgro Pasticceria.

This is also a spot for brands to show off some of their newest and best products to the thousands of people walking by. Mohawk Flooring, #LicensetoSpill tour was in attendance to share their newest technology, SmartStrand® carpet flooring. Chip Wade from HGTV’s Elbow Room was on hand to show off the beauty of design of the carpet.
Chip Wade #licensetospill Mohawk Flooring
SmartStrand® has permanent stain and soil resistance without the addition of treatments or aftermarket barriers. We watched as children were allowed to spray a carpet remnant with soy sauce and fruit drinks and the stains were removed with water. Plain, room temperature water brought back a tan carpet back to it’s original color.

In our own homes a spray bottle isn’t going to get our entire home clean. A carpet cleaner with warm water and mild soap (like dish soap) is all that’s needed to get out surface dirt, spills and soil.

Not only is it easy to clean and maintain but it’s eco friendly, Dupont Sorona. SmartStrand® is produced using renewable sources, reducing our dependence on energy for production and manufacturing. This makes choosing SmartStrand® flooring a great choice all around.

Mohawk is the world’s largest flooring manufacturer, selling its beautiful flooring products through retail partners. Enter to win your own 6′ x 9′ SmartStrand® Silk bound carpet rug from Mohawk Flooring. We are already Mohawk users for our living room area rug. It’s withstanding the abuse and traffic from a family of 5 and 2 dogs quite well but I’d love to see SmartStrand® in action on the rest of our home.

A Crafty Night with #ACMooreGNO

Last week I was joined by 8 other bloggers for a crafty night of fun. This was the inaugural A.C. Moore Girls Night Out.

ACMooreGNO Bloggers

A couple of months back I pitched AC Moore in a selfish attempt to let me and my friends use one of their rooms to get together for a night of laughs and crafts. Get this, they fell for it.  In fact they came through with such an awesome event that I’m hoping to help them organize more for other bloggers.

We were joined by A.C. Moore’s Director or Education, Marketing Manager and Activity Coordinator, A.C. Moore’s PR Rep and a brand representative from Beacon Adhesives. Stepping into that room I knew they meant business. We were set up with complete stations with everything we needed to create 2 fun projects that fit our skill levels. Within the group we had some crafty mavens and some crafty hesitant but the steps of each craft were laid out clearly and there were plenty examples given from our leader Robin.

The  night was filled laughs and information about products and inspiration and crafting stories from the pros and the bloggers.

Here is what we worked on.

The Quilled Roses Mini Wreath was my favorite. It did take the longest since I had to finish my roses and assembly at home.

The first craft we did was this Patchwork Paper Composition Book.

All the pretty squares were provided along with adhesives and the notebook. I’m using mine for the next conference I attend. I plan on making a couple more of these with different themed paper for different personalities.

Manayunk StrEAT Food Festival

Newark, Delaware isn’t known as a food town. If we want to try something new or eclectic we head to the Philadelphia area.  Even the food trucks are better there.

This weekend we are headed to Manayunk StrEAT Food Festival where 30 local food trucks will be featured to kick of Restaurant Week.

On April 13th, 2013, a variety of vendors will offer samples of delicious food on Main Street. Then, from April 14th-26th, Manayunk restaurants will host a Restaurant Week. Snag amazing deals on even more amazing meals at Manayunk’s finest eateries.  Be sure to mark your calendars, because this event is not to be missed!

The trucks will be lined up along Main Street facing the sidewalk for easy pedestrian access.  Visitors are encouraged to stroll the street, taste the offerings from their favorite trucks, and sit and enjoy the food at picnic-style seating areas around the district.

Find unique Food Truck offerings like:

Mac Mart Cart-mac and cheese, old school and new school styles

Farm Truck-feature local and seasonal produce

The Cow and the Curd-a midwest favorite comes to Philly

My goal is to get a taste of at least 1/2 the Food Trucks there.

If you’re local to Philadelphia and the Tri-State Area come by either for the StrEAT Food Festival or take part in the Restaurant Tour next week.

Philadelphia Science Festival 2013 #PSF2013

On Monday Melinda and I attended the Philadelphia Science Festival Preview event at the Franklin Institute. I was a little hesitant on attending because I wasn’t sure how much stuff they would have but I am glad I attended. They had a ton of knowledgeable people on hand talking about a lot of different cool things.

I learned that Science isn’t just for geeks and if you open up your mind there is a lot to be learned about science and the Philadelphia Science Festival is helping teach people cool stuff about science.

Here is a little bit of information on the 10 day event (4/18/13 – 4/28/13) coming up:

The Philadelphia Science Festival is a ten-day, community-wide celebration of science that takes place annually in April, featuring lectures, debates, hands-on activities, special exhibitions and a variety of other informal science education experiences for Philadelphians of all ages.
