Cradles to Crayons Clothing Drive at Springfield Mall, PA.

Cradles to Crayons is a major player in the Philadelphia region who is always on top of the of the list for helping others in the area. Nearly one in four Philadelphians, including 130,000 children, live in poverty and C2C is making it their mission to provide the essentials for those children and families.

I’m headed to the mall today but not to shop but with a bag full of clothes that Shaun has outgrown.

The Easter Bunny will be at Center Court at Springfield Mall, beginning Friday, March 8, not only to help launch his namesake holiday at the major Delaware County shopping hub, but also to kick off a joint clothes collection drive with Cradles to Crayons for the region’s disadvantaged children.

The collection effort – to continue through March 30 – is a collaboration between the more than 70 merchants at the M

all and Cradles to Crayons, the local nonprofit that provides children, from birth to age 12, living in low-income and homeless situations with the essential items they need to thrive – at home, at school and at play.

The Easter Bunny is scheduled to hop into Center Court at the Mall, 1250 Baltimore Pike, at 10:00 a.m. on March 8.

hoppers who drop off donations of new or nearly new clothing (from footwear to winter coats, and new socks and underwear) at the Mall’s Customer Service center (located near Ruby Tuesday’s) will receive a discount off photos with the Easter Bunny. Shoppers will also be able to select from baskets of “Easter eggs,” individualized egg-shaped cards that identify an item of clothing needed by an area low-income and/or homeless child, and purchase items on the eggs from stores within the mall. The purchases will be gathered by courtesy desk staff and provided to Cradles to Crayons, from which local social service agencies, including homeless and domestic violence shelters, schools, and foster homes, will distribute them to the children in their care.

“Springfield Mall is proud to host this important donation drive benefiting children within our communities,” said Maureen Weir, the Mall’s senior marketing director. “We are pleased to join forces with Cradles to Crayons and Delaware County Moms, and look forward to working with our shoppers in supporting such a worthy cause.”

“Cradles to Crayons cannot thank enough the Springfield Mall and its scores of merchants who are making it possible – and convenient – for shoppers to help the one in five children in this region who live in poverty,” said Michal Smith, executive director of the Cradles to Crayons. “Families living in poverty struggle to pay for rent, utilities and food, so warm clothing, coats, and shoes that fit are often completely out of reach.”

Just Between Friends Consignment Sale Main Line, PA

Shopping for kids clothes is a HUGE expense. Mine don’t seem to stop growing, not even if I’ve already shopped for that season.  While I love shopping new trends and styles I also prefer to save money on basics like jeans, coats and tees.  By gently used I’m able to stock up on great deals for coming seasons without putting a dent in our bank account or sacrificing on fun kids fashion.

Coming to the Greater Philadelphia Expo in Oaks, PA on March 14-16 is Just Between Friends,  the nation’s leading Children’s and Family Consignment Sales Event Franchise.

Just Between Friends Sales events are a savvy shopper’s dream!
These are not retail stores but rather savings extravaganzas–shopping events that happen usually twice a year per location. At these events, consignors bring their new and gently-used children’s and maternity merchandise to sell. Shoppers can then browse and purchase these items at great savings, usually far below retail prices.

At a typical Just Between Friends event, you can find clothing, toys, baby equipment, strollers, high chairs, cribs, joggers, nursery gear, maternity wear, baby carriers, play yards, play sets, coats, shoes and more in an organized, clean environment.

A Longwood Gardens Christmas

Except for the 3 years we lived in Maryland I’ve lived in the same 60 square mile radius all of my life. In all of those years I’ve never visited Longwood Gardens even when I was only 20 minutes away.

Longwood Gardens is a 1,077 acre estate in Kennett Square, PA that includes gardens, meadows, woodlands, fountains and a 4 – acre conservancy.

I was invited to participate on the Star Blogger Team for Longwood Gardens Christmas this past week. The introduction included a visit and tour of the property. While we didn’t get to view the entire estate we did see enough to be amazed and delighted at the twinkling lights and lush plants in the conservancy.

It was already dark when we arrived to Longwood Gardens but were greeted with hanging lights and snowflakes and light covered trees to guide our way. I want to make sure our next visit has some daytime viewing so we can enjoy the other attractions such as The Garden Railway, the dancing fountains and magnificent decorated trees.

Longwood is going to become a tradition for our family for now on since I’ve been able to experience it first hand.
If you are local to the Philadelphia area I highly suggest taking the time to visit Longwood Gardens. I would highly suggest to visiting during the less busy hours during the weekdays. This will give you and your family more time to enjoy the scenery and foliage and flowers without the hustle and bustle of crowds.

Take my word for it, Longwood Gardens is worth the trip.

Not the Northern Liberties I Remember

Northern Liberties, Philadelphia has been voted one of America’s Top Hipster neighborhoods.

A hipster can easily be defined as one who is uninterested in mainstream and conventional society. But you will often find these same people wearing skinny jeans, checking in on Foursquare and rocking out on their iPhones.

Anyway. This neighborhood that has been recognized by Forbes.com as an up and coming, great place to live, work and hang is where I grew up. I learned to smoke there. I met my best friend there. I had my first crush there. I felt the impact of divorce there. I found out what hookers do there. I learned what hunger felt like there. Northern Liberties was not a great place to live. On the little street that I lived on were about 12 houses but only 5 families resided there. The rest of them were boarded up and most likely suitable for condemnation. My front yard was a bank parking lot. Our mornings were greeted by the sour smell coming from Schmidt’s Brewery located behind us. The abandoned Boone School for boys; a refuge to junkies and homeless, scared me to walk past it anytime of day.

The Northern Liberties that I remember

the crumbling Daniel Boone School

Today the brewery is gone, replaced with state of the art lofts and condos surrounding the Piazza at Schmidt’s. Each weekend the community gets together for concerts, sporting events, group workouts and farmers markets. Coffee shops, food trucks and a booming housing market have made Northern Liberties the new Seattle.

the new northern liberties

today’s Northern Liberties

Next in line to make it big is bordering Fishtown; the most racially segregated and violent communities in Philadelphia. I’ve known people who have been hurt and even killed over senseless acts of rage, jealousy and stupidity.

I haven’t been back to either of these communities in a really long time. I find it hard to accept the changes of the place I left behind so long ago. I’m proud of these communities and developers for making something good out of what many treated like nothing. I still have friends in these neighborhoods. They love it. The changes made for a better life. Well except for the traffic on New Market and Laurel Streets.

Destination Vacation with CityPASS Giveaway

There have been lots of changes the way families vacation lately. While 2 weeks in Hawaii sounds like heaven there are so many things to do when you take a city destination getaway. Visiting local museums, historic sites and becoming a hometown tourist is a great way to discover new town or rediscover the streets you see everyday.

CityPASS is the way to go when you want to explore a city’s top attractions.

Launched in 1997 in Seattle and San Francisco, CityPASS bundles prepaid admission to each city’s top attractions – based on annual attendance – into one easy-to-use ticket booklet whose cost is up to half off what it would cost to purchase those same admissions separately.

While CityPASS isn’t availble everywhere you will hopefully find it in a major city near you or one you can plan to visit. Right now CityPASS can be found in these top North American destinations; Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Hollywood, Houston, New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, Southern California and Toronto.

My family is planning a fall trip to Philadelphia. Never mind that we are in Philly a couple times a month, that’s not the point. We haven’t seen much of what the city has to offer. Shae’s never been to the Philly Zoo which is also America’s First Zoo. We are planning our trip as a mini staycation, a long weekend when the weather is more pleasant. We have 6 attractions to visit on our coupon book. Think we can squeeze them in on a long weekend?
