Fabulous Ice Age #NetFlixKids

Netflix_StreamTeam_Badge

2014 disclosure

The Pairs Ice Dancing Competition is my favorite event in the Olympics. I find the chemistry between the couples beautiful and I am always blown away by the amazing jumps and lifts that they are able to perform all while sliding around on thin blades across ice. The way that the two can travel side by side at such a great speed and then the man lifts her and continues with the woman hoisted over his head all while keeping his balance is astounding. The trust that the woman must have in her partner to allow herself to be tossed into the air and spun around never fails to amaze me. They both posses such power and grace and they move so perfectly together; it’s breath-taking.

The Fabulous Ice Age took me back to the very first ice shows in 1930s night clubs and the ice dancer turned movie star Sonja Henie, up to the modern day Disney On Ice performances.

Fabulous Ice Age #netflixkidsThere was so much wonderful old footage of people with so much joy for what they were doing; I was thrilled. All of those people who spent their lives watching these wonderful shows and collecting props and costumes and memorabilia have such a passion for the sport. I don’t blame them. I love seeing the ice shows that Disney puts on. As soon as they began to talk about the start of the Disney shows, I began to remember all of the wonderful times that I’ve had with my family at those performances. They’re so much fun; getting to see my favorite characters and hear the songs from my favorite movies but all performed on ice. It was sad to hear that the old shows had to end for Disney to begin but a whole new era of Americans got to enjoy ice skating the way people did in the 1930s.

Kicking and Screaming the Whole Way

We finally cancelled cable to save a lot of bucks considering our internet/cable bill was through the roof. We were paying well over $150 a month for cable and internet and to me that seemed like way too much money to be paying on a monthly basis to have over 500 channels when we only watched 10-15 channels max.

It wasn’t so easy to actually call and cancel because I haven’t been without cable TV since college so for some reason I was holding on for dear life kicking and screaming the whole way.  I must have called Comcast five different times trying to get the bill lowered to a point that we would be comfortable with and would still be able to keep cable. Melinda on the other hand told me to cancel from the start because she could care less about the cable as long as we had internet which we still do.  Persistence paid off and luckily we were able to keep about 15-20 channels and the internet for half of what we were paying in the past so we have all of the local channels plus some others ones that we will probably never watch.  We did lose most of the cartoon channels as well as the Food Network which is what normally was watched in our house.  We do have DVD players and a ROKU and have Netflix with a subscription so we have been pretty good so far.  The kids have found cartoons on Netflix and Melinda, Sabreena and I have been watching Breaking Bad.

I must admit not having cable isn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I know there are certain shows like Sons of Anarchy on FX that we won’t be able to watch but cutting our cable and internet bill in half was way more important.

Do you have cable or no? If not do you have service like Netflix or HULU Plus?

So You Think You Can Dance Favorites

One show I’ve been obsessed with for years is So You Think You Can Dance. In my head I’m a phenomenal dancer and move through every genre with ease and finesse. In real life I can shake my thang on the dancefloor but I’m not winning any awards. The sesaon finale for season 9 is coming up next week and that always gets me searching YouTube for my favorites dances.

Sabreena and I have been watching this show religiously since season 2. That season and season 5 were my absolute favorites. Not only did they feature some of the greatest dancers but the best performances. Here’s a collection of some of my most memorable.

Group Number Ramalama Bang Bang
Choreographed by Wade Robson, one of the best dancers/choreographers evah!

Alison and Ivan-Why
Choreographed by Tyce Diorio

Heidi and Travis-Calling You
Choreographed by Mia Michaels

Kayla and Kupono-Gravity
Choreographed by Mia Michaels

Randi and Evan-Koop Island Blues
Choreographed by Mia Michaels

Melissa and Ade-A Women’s Worth
Choreographed by Tyce Diorio

While I’ve been watching this season I haven’t been as invested as I have been in the past. It took weeks for me to connect to the dancers. I’m rooting for Chehon and Eliana. Do you watch So You Think You Can Dance?  Are you a fanatic like me?

Don’t Miss a Thing with Roku #Giveaway

Our DVR was set up to record House, at least we thought it was. This past weekend when it was time to settle in to catch up on TV we quickly realized we lost the last 2 episodes. We easily caught up using the Roku and Hulu Plus.

Roku is a streaming media player for home with over 300 channels; something for everyone. Since the Fox network can’t be found anywhere on On-Demand we knew we could find it on Hulu Plus. And since we both want to watch House the television was the only place to watch. The Roku has been set up for a couple weeks already but our limited tv watching time hasn’t given us a chance to utilize it much. This weekend we were able to catch up on favorites and play Angry Birds LIFESIZE!

On Christmas day we like to either play seasonal music watch holiday movies while we unwrap gifts, entertain family and eat. Using the Roku is going to allow us to do this seamlessly with channels like Pandora and Amazon Instant Video and Disney.

Win a Roku ($60 value) in time for your own holiday entertaining or personal enjoyment. Tell me another Roku channel that you might enjoy through the Roku.

Do You Live in Suburgatory

There’s lots of buzz going on about new shows, season premiers, this year’s hottest cast and more. Suburbatory is ABC’s newest comedy airing Wednesday, September 28 at 8:30|7:30c.

Single father George (Jeremy Sisto) only wants the best for his sixteen-year-old daughter Tessa(Jane Levy). So when he finds a box of condoms on her nightstand, he moves them out of their apartment in New York City to a house in the suburbs. But all Tessa sees is the horror of over-manicured lawns and plastic Franken-moms. Being in the ‘burbs can be hell, but it also may just bring Tessa and George closer than they’ve ever been.

Tessa and George have been on their own ever since Tessa’s Mom pulled a Kramer vs. Kramer before Tessa was potty trained. So far, George has done a pretty good job of raising Tessa without a maternal figure in their lives, but suddenly he’s feeling a little out of his league. So it’s goodbye New York City and hello suburbs. At first Tessa is horrified by the big-haired, fake-boobed mothers and their sugar-free Red Bull-chugging kids, but little by little, she and her dad begin finding a way to survive on the clean streets of the ‘burbs. Sure, the neighbors might smother you with love while their kids stare daggers at your back, but underneath all that plastic and caffeine they’re really not half bad.

You Know You’re From Suburgatory When…
1) Your dog’s haircut is more expensive than yours.
2) The drinking fountains offer sparkling or still.
3) The school cafeteria serves tuna tartar.
4) The majority of medical procedures are elective.
5) “Brunette” is a dirty word.
6) The top three industries are tanning, spandex and peroxide

Do you live in the suburbs? Can you relate to any of these? Visit Suburgatory on Facebook and Twitter to learn more about the show and how city and suburb girls differ.

Internet or Television

My friends and I were talking earlier this week about whether we would rather give up television or the internet and almost all of us chose to give up TV. It could just be my generation but I use the internet for entertainment far more often than television. The internet is the place where I get all of my news and where I can talk to all my friends, new or old. I watch content on YouTube and read articles on Yahoo. I look at old pictures on Facebook and play games on Lumosity. And I look at blogs just like my parents do (though they are not the same kinds of blogs.) I use the internet the way it should be used, to find interesting and entertaining websites and new and original content that I can tell my friends about and obsess over.
However I don’t believe the internet could ever replace television. Even if the internet could provide every show that is offered on television for the same price as television, people would not be willing to give up there giant flat screen TVs for tiny computer screens. Also television is quickly improving and become higher quality (not necessarily in what kinds of shows we are viewing but in the visual look of the shows.) People are spending more money on their televisions and the packages they purchase to get more channels. TV is a pastime that families can do together and the internet can never replace that.

If you have to choose would you give up television or the internet?
