Soothing your Baby

Babies are born with the ability to soothe themselves. We weren’t in the womb with them for nine months to offer cuddles and kisses. Most babies suck their thumbs while in the womb but once they are born some tend to lose that instinct due to interferences and distractions such as pacifiers, no-scratch mittens, swaddling and sleeves. I don’t think as parents we are purposely trying to take away their self-soothing instinct but we are told to try other methods. You can either encourage the thumb sucking by keeping your little one’s hands free or obstruction and gently bringing her hand to her mouth or you can adopt new soothing methods for a fussy baby.

Eye Contact
There is nothing more mesmerizing than just gazing into your baby’s eyes. Let her know you are there and that you are there to comfort her.
Swaddle
I’m a big proponent of swaddling, the tight squeeze is similar to what babies felt in the womb. Prohibiting them from flailing all about from sudden noises or even their own muscle twitches will keep baby calmer. Swaddling isn’t a new concept either, it’s been suggested that it was developed in 4000 B.C. so us moms do know something or two about taking care of babies!

this is a hysterical swaddling video, I’ve never seen it done like this but obviously it works

Whisper
Loud noises annoy me so you can imagine how irritating they can be to babies little ears. Use a quiet voice and slow speech while talking to baby. Talk about anything, vent about your job, sing your new favorite song or recite a sonnet by Shakespeare, it doesn’t matter as long as your words come out loving and tender and peaceful.
Get Close
Cuddle that cranky baby! Pull her close against you let her hear your heartbeat, smell your scent and feel you hands against her body. Your baby is relying on you to keep her safe and secure, remind her with your touch.

Get Moving
Swing, rock, sway or jiggle. Sabreena and Shaun liked to be rocked and Shae liked to be bounced, each child is different so try everything until something works. Do more than just move around, change positions. I found flipping Shae on her belly, swaddled in a football hold and bouncing up and down put her to sleep instantly. Did I instantly figure that out, nope, it took lots of trial and error.

Use all, some or none of the tips above, use what works for you and your baby.

Simplicity Crib Recall

If you are using a Simplicity drop side crib STOP using it now and continue reading.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of one million Simplicity (this company appears to no longer conduct day to day operations.) and Graco cribs after three children died of suffocation. The deaths occurred because the crib’s plastic hardware can break or deform, causing the drop side to detach. When the drop side detaches, it creates space between the drop side and the crib mattress. Infants and toddlers can roll into this space and become entrapped which can lead to suffocation.

CPSC is aware of one death involving an 8-month-old child from Houston, Texas who became entrapped and suffocated between the drop side and the crib mattress when a plastic connector on the drop side broke. The child’s death was previously reported by CPSC. CPSC also is aware of an additional 25 incidents involving the drop side detaching from the crib. In six of these incidents, the drop side detached because the plastic flexible tab deformed or broke. In four of the drop side detachment incidents, other plastic parts, including connectors or tracks, deformed or broke. In two of the incidents, two children became entrapped between the drop side and the crib mattress. There were no reported injuries.

Simplicity Inc.is listed as manufacturer of all the cribs but they were also sold under the Graco brand name. The recalled cribs, priced between $100 and $300, were sold by U.S. retailers and chains including Target Corp., Big Lots Inc, Babies “R” Us and family-owned Meijer Inc. under the Simplicity or Graco brands, from January 1998 through May 2007. In a separate recall in June, the commission recalled about 40,000 Nursery-in-a-Box cribs, manufactured by Simplicity, because the assembly instructions incorrectly explain how to attach the drop side.

The current recall involves multiple models and models numbers. This recall involves all drop side cribs with a different or “newer” style of plastic hardware from those cribs recalled in September 2007. This newer style of Simplicity hardware can be identified by a flexible plastic tab at the top of the lower tracks.
Recalled Simplicity crib models:
• Aspen 3 in 1
• Aspen 4 in 1
• Nursery-in-a-Box
• Crib N Changer Combo
• Chelsea
• Pooh 4 in 1
Recalled Graco crib models:
• Ultra 3 in 1
• Ultra 4 in 1
• Ultra 5 in 1
• Whitney
• Trio

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled cribs and find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their baby. Consumers should immediately return the crib to the place of purchase for a refund, replacement or store credit.

Baby Signs with Elizabeth program giveaway

Communication is KEY.
Don’t they say that about everything; marriage, career, friends. What about communication with your baby or toddler? What do you do when they can’t speak, write or read? The Baby Signs® Program teaches babies simple, easy to use gestures for communicating with others. By using motions and mimicking concepts or actions babies are now able to “talk” with parents and caregivers and reduce the frustration felt by all in the past. Baby Signs goes beyond “bye-bye” and “all gone”, your baby can ask to read you to read her a book or for a specific snack without the guessing game of “Why is she crying again”. The Baby Signs® Program helps children develop both language and cognitive skills. Studies show that babies who sign actually develop speech sooner and have larger vocabularies when they do start talking.

I used Baby Signs when Shaun was little and again with Shae. Shaun was a late talker but was always able to ask for a specific snack or drink. Shae on the other hand was a early talker but Baby Signs helped us understand her better and also communicate with others. At the age of 22 months she still uses some signs out of habit even though she can say them perfectly. I love that she can say thank you for a cookie while doing the sign for thank you, it looks so sweet.

Elizabeth Sprague is the mother of 3 boys and a baby Sign Language Instructor in Portland Oregon. Elizabeth was born deaf in one ear, and obviously had an early interest in learning Sign Language. Growing up in the middle of her mother’s in-home daycare and having six siblings gave her a love of being surrounded by children. Elizabeth studied ASL and Child Psychology, but studying the Baby Signsº Program specifically has been the most fun and rewarding. Being a mommy to three perfect little boys! She has used Baby Sign Language with all of them and has seen the amazing benefits first hand, both immediate and the ones that come later. Here is her youngest son Joshua at age 14 months working on his signs.

Teaching Baby Signs classes is a great way for Elizabeth to share this great way for parents and caregivers to have a window into a child’s life before they can talk. She teaches because she knows it works to provide all the benefits it claims to. Some parents worry about it not being natural or possibly delaying speech, but Elizabeth has the research (both professional and personal) to ease those fears and even downright prove them wrong! She wants to share this program with as many families as she can because it makes happier babies, which leads to happier parents and caregivers……. and who doesn’t want to be happier?

The Benefits of Baby Signs®

Families who use the Baby Signs® Program know firsthand that there are many benefits to using signs with their babies. Using the Baby Signs® Program …
• Reduces tears, tantrums, & frustration
• Allows babies to share their worlds
• Increases respect for babies
• Strengthens the parent-infant bond
• Boosts self-esteem and self-confidence
• Makes learning to talk easier
• Stimulates intellectual development

Over two decades of Baby Signs® research has shown that these proven benefits affect different areas of a child’s development. Using the Baby Signs® Program stimulates:
• Social-Emotional Development
• Language Development
• Cognitive Development

Elizabeth and I are so confident that Baby Signs is an excellent tool for your family that she wants to give my readers the chance to win The Complete Starter Kit; which contains everything parents and their babies need for a successful start to signing fun OR the Baby Signs Potty Training Kit which contains everything you need to make potty training fun and easy.

Mutsy Grow Up! Booster Discount Code

We like to eat as a family every night. So needless to say our booster seat has gotten a lot of use but I was surprised when it crapped out on us. The tray just wouldn’t secure anymore and pulling it up to the table wasn’t an option because it had such a tall profile it didn’t fit under the table. I needed something new but still something to keep her secure from falling.

Mutsy came to my rescue with the Grow Up! booster seat. First the rich chocolate brown color was perfect with our dining furniture. The cushy soft seat was the next thing I noticed. Then I took it out of the box and instantly knew this was going to be a great change to the bulky booster we’ve been using for over a year. The Grow Up! Booster is the most stylish seat in the house but it doesn’t lack in safety and comfort. The harness allows for 5-point restraint for younger children or lap restraint for children up to 4 years of age and I already mentioned the cushy seat but are also no sharp edges and it sits low on the seat so she can climb in and out herself.

Mutsy has a complete line of innovative and sleek products. The Mutsy collection is expertly designed to meet parents’ every need with a unique modular system that is extremely flexible. The basis of the Mutsy range is three frames, each with its own specific features. Various components fit into the clean and modern Mutsy frames such as a travel cot (bassinet), a stroller seat, a car seat (with adaptor), and a fun seat for toddler. An intelligent click mechanism allows for components to be easily interchanged with a single movement. This click mechanism is found on the Babysitter chassis as well, so the stroller seat can be clicked in to make a baby rocker. The flexible system also allows for a child to grow with his/her Mutsy stroller for many years. The Mutsy baby transport collection also features the Slider, a new baby mobility concept with a revolutionary design and the Easygrow high chair and the Grow-Up! booster seat, two of the most stylish mealtime accessories for baby.

I really love the compact look of the 4rider with front facing buggy. With the optional shopping cart it would make the perfect stroller for shopping, day trips and vacations. Rugged wheels for the boardwalk and a large basket for everything needed for a day at the park are on my list for a dream stroller, I think the 4rider is that dream stroller. To view the entire line of Mutsy strollers, accessories and feeding gear visit Goores and use discount code lwmfmu to receive 10% off any order.

Winner Chosen…Kokopax Blakely Tote GIVEAWAY

Kaburton at comcastdot net

One of the hardest shopping decisions to make while preparing for baby is picking the perfect diaper bag. The diaper bag is your right hand man; holding all of your belongings in an orderly fashion. Somewhere along the line of finding something useful and practical we’ve lost the fashion.

Kokopax has brought the fashion back without losing the function. The Blakely Ring Tote is a stylish bag o-ring handled bag that closely resembles a handbag but does the duty of a diaper bag. With 3 large inner pockets, separate zipper pocket, bottle/beverage compartment and included clutch this makes not only a great diaper bag but also an overnight bag, beach bag or craft tote. The Blakely Ring Tote has a trendy selection of cotton canvas outer materials with nylon inner; both durable and washable to stand up to regular use and stay looking good.

Kokopax was started in 2007 with a classic framed backpack carrier, modernized with chic materials. Designer and creator, Sarah Spoor, was in need of a hands free solution to carry her babies while cooking, caring for her other children, tending to household activities and moving about regular life. The Kokopax classic carrier was designed; it was the first product from the Kokopax name. The Blakely Tote came soon after, using the same stylish materials, it is a lightweight gorgeous alternative to the bulky diaper bags we have gotten used to seeing. The children’s sun hat and organic monkey attachment for the carrier are the latest additions with the Kokopax name and are meant to complement the existing products.

“At the kitchen table, long after our babies were asleep, my husband and I thought about a company name. It came easily, from two of my favorite childhood books, Pattycake and Koko’s Kitten. I used to love monkeys and gorillas because they were the next best thing to a real baby. They also carry their babies on their backs. The “pax” play seemed logical because it sounds like “packs,” but means “peace” in Latin. We are all for peace when it comes to carrying babies. “

The family behind Kokopax believes in dreams, otherwise there wouldn’t be a Kokopax. Courage and determination is what pulled Sarah Spoor through to see her dreams come true. This is why they partnered with I-am-perfect to donate 10% of organic line proceeds. I-Am-Perfect is a foundation that serves children with special needs.

Buy anything from Kokopax and receive 10% off with discount code lwmf2009.

Kokopax is giving my readers that chance to win the Blakely Ring Tote of their choice. VISIT Kokopax and tell me which fabric you would choose!

My Little Seat-portable High Chair

Safety is number one when it comes to the littlest ones. This is why we as parents research everything that our children come in contact with from cribs to toys to clothing to gear.My Precious Kid has done some of this work for us since Child Safety is their number one priority. My Precious Kid Child Safety Products and Baby Gear protect your children and give you peace of mind. Choose products based on your needs, mealtime, potty training, home safety and many more. They even carry products to keep your pets, elderly family and children with special needs out of harm’s way. With such a strong passion be assured that everything in their store has been carefully selected to meet parent’s high standards.

Like most toddlers they want to do what mommy and daddy and older siblings do. One of our biggest challenges lately is mealtime outside the home. We go to dinner at my parents often and while their home is open and inviting for my children it isn’t fully equipped for little ones. Mealtimes have been stressful lately since I’m not very comfortable putting Shae in a regular chair, she’s not the sit still kinda kid. I needed a solution to keep her secure in a regular chair.

The My Little Seat-portable high chair is that great solution. Totally transportable and super quick to install this is becoming a staple in my diaperbag. Also with a weight limit of 35lbs this could last most families well into toddlerhood. We recently had dinner at my parents and My Little Seat fit perfectly on their chairs. Shae loved being able to sit with MomMom and PopPop like a big girl. She was safe but comfortable the entire time.

I’m keeping My Precious Kid as my go to place to keep my kiddos safe and healthy.

Winner Chosen…Happy Heinys cloth diaper GIVEAWAY

Courtney said…
I like the Royal Blue Size L.

courtneytarver85 at yahoo dot com

May 28, 2009 9:36 PM

When I found out I was pregnant with Shae, to say it was a surprise is an understatement. I was living my baby fever through the mamas at Babytalkbio.com (now The Mamasphere) as they got pregnant, had babies, discussed cool new baby gear and best of all introduced me to cloth diapers. Cloth diapering was never a thought when Sabreena and Shaun were little but all of a sudden all of my “friends” were doing it. I even joked about “If I ever get pregnant again I’m going to cloth diaper”. Well it happened and I kept my promise.

I spent months researching what was going to right for us. We started with prefolds and fitteds with covers then moved to pockets and All-in-Ones from so many different companies and WAHMs. I’ve had some old-faithfuls and some that didn’t last and some that needed a few months till the fit was right. I’m always on the search for a great fitting diaper and I found two from Happy Heinys, the One-Size Pocket Diaper and a regular Pocket Diaper. I always considered Happy Heinys to be one of the “brand name” cloth diapers but never got around to trying them, no particular reason

Itty Bitty Baby Bunz offered me the chance to test these two diapers side by side. I use other One-Size diapers and overall haven’t been impressed in the last several months. Shae is a bottom heavy baby, chunky thighs and full booty, so we often get some butt crack due to the too-short rise. The Happy Heinys One-Size was fantastic. When I first opened them I immediately noticed the super stretch and WIDE aplix closure. These diapers fit so good, I honestly didn’t think I could get such a good fit with a one-size, they say fits newborn to 35 pounds but we are already hovering 32lbs and I see potential in lasting till potty training. The fit is trim, the inner fleece is buttery soft and the Hot Pink color is vibrant. The One-Size comes with 2 inserts, a full size and a small for when the diaper is snapped in the newborn or small setting. I use the small on top of the large insert as extra protection during nap-time.

The sized Pocket Diaper has also be a great addition in the rotation. Again a very trim fit with full booty coverage, super soft inner and bright colors and an extra large pocket opening to make stuffing quick. I choose aplix closure for easy diaper changes for Rob and Sabreena, yes Shae can get them off but I can stop that with bloomers or shorts. I actually prefer the custom fit with aplix (Velcro) closures and Happy Heinys have some of the widest tabs I’ve seen and better yet they lay flat. This makes it a little harder for Shae to pull them off, there aren’t corners sticking up begging for her attention. The regular pocket diapers do not come with inserts; this allows you to choose the style/material insert you prefer and also the absorption level. I use inserts I’ve accumulated or trifolded microfiber towels and I’ll snag the small insert from the One-Size for naptime or another booster we have on hand. We don’t do cloth at bedtime since she’s such a heavy wetter but Happy Heinys say they have tested for up to 12 hours or more for bedtime, I’m not ready to try that yet, maybe when she’s closer to potty training.

I’m glad I finally got to try out Happy Heinys but sad I waited so long. She is almost 2; I could’ve had that much more time to enjoy the great fit and no leak goodness!

Are you interested in taking the leap into Cloth Diapering? Are you a seasoned CDer and want to experience a Happy Heiny for yourself? Itty Bitty Baby Bunz wants to give one of my readers a Happy Heiny Pocket Diaper.
