Look Mom! I’m Driving!

Two years ago the big announcement about Sabreena was she was getting braces. Yesterday Sabreena drove for the first time. This really snuck up on me. I know she’s 16 now but driving didn’t really enter my mind until signing the Driver’s Ed forms last week. Then I get a phone call Tuesday morning from her Driver’s Ed teacher telling me he’s adding her to the schedule the next day. I was a bit surprised. I fumbled some words and then just said UH OK. My first instinct was this tweet

reaction to teen driver

UGH the teen is driving

Sabreena was a little surprised too. She had only had 1 class and didn’t feel prepared to actually get behind the wheel. Since she is already 16 she was 1st in line to drive.

After her first lesson I asked her how it went, she said “Ok, I didn’t hit anything which is a plus”. That’s my positive thinker!

So we’ve entered into new frontiers and I’m not sure it I’m ok with it.

Internet or Television

My friends and I were talking earlier this week about whether we would rather give up television or the internet and almost all of us chose to give up TV. It could just be my generation but I use the internet for entertainment far more often than television. The internet is the place where I get all of my news and where I can talk to all my friends, new or old. I watch content on YouTube and read articles on Yahoo. I look at old pictures on Facebook and play games on Lumosity. And I look at blogs just like my parents do (though they are not the same kinds of blogs.) I use the internet the way it should be used, to find interesting and entertaining websites and new and original content that I can tell my friends about and obsess over.
However I don’t believe the internet could ever replace television. Even if the internet could provide every show that is offered on television for the same price as television, people would not be willing to give up there giant flat screen TVs for tiny computer screens. Also television is quickly improving and become higher quality (not necessarily in what kinds of shows we are viewing but in the visual look of the shows.) People are spending more money on their televisions and the packages they purchase to get more channels. TV is a pastime that families can do together and the internet can never replace that.

If you have to choose would you give up television or the internet?

Wordless Wednesday – A Treat At The Beach

Me, Melinda and the kids went to Ocean City, NJ this past weekend for a little getaway. The kids got a treat from Kohr Bros. I think they enjoyed it. LOL.

Project 52 – Week 17

Welcome to my 17th week of Project 52. Project 52 is a weekly wrap-up of our lives.  Last year I tried to do Project 365 and I failed within a couple days.  This is a much better approach to give all of you a peek into our lives behind the blog.

project 52, weekly photos

A quiet week. The weather was spastic, rain, sun, rain, sun so we didn’t really go anywhere.  Last weekend Rob, Shaun, my bff Stacy and her husband and I went to a Philly Soul game; it was so much fun. The rest of the weekend was spent doing errands, taking Shae to soccer and me sleeping all day Sunday because I was sick.  Exciting HUH!

I May Be That Dad!

I don’t want to be that dad but I feel like I am in a way. You know that dad who freaks over everything his teenage daughter wears. I am even a little freaked about who she hangs with.

She is a super smart girl but I worry about boys. Boys are sneaky and have bad thoughts on their minds. I know not all boys but that it what I think when it comes to my smart, beautiful teenage daughter. From what I hear from her and Melinda she seems to run with a decent crowd but the dad in me can’t help but worry. I am just afraid she will get mixed up with the wrong person or situation by accident.

She came up last night asking could she wear a certain dress to school and I immediately said NO without even thinking. In my head I knew I shouldn’t have responded so fast but my first thought was what boys would think when they saw her. Just writing this post is giving me anxiety. I know she isn’t a baby anymore but she is my baby and I want to do everything I can to protect her.

Melinda tells me all of the time that I am over reacting and I know she is right but again I am just trying to protect Sabreena. I hope she knows that I am just trying to protect her because I don’t want her to pull away from me because she thinks I am a crazy dad.

Am I being crazy?

One of Sabreenas favorite movies

In 2004 Disney and Pixar released one of my favorite children’s movies of all time: The Incredibles. Now they are releasing it all over again, but this time in Blu-ray. The disk now comes with all new special features including, Paths To Pixar: Story Artists which showcases multiple Pixar story artists, giving viewers exciting insight into their work, their inspiration and the personal paths that eventually led them to a career at Pixar and also “The New Nomanisan” Island Redevelopment Plan, which is a guided tour of Nomanisan Island, post-Syndrome, pitching the island as a vacation resort paradise. The DVD in the combo pack also includes all of the old features like the short film “Jack-Jack Attack” and the animated short “Boundin’.”

This movie follows Bob Parr and his family of superheroes who are forced into hiding after a little incident with a man who didn’t want to be saved. After a series of outrageous circumstances, including Mr. Parr throwing a man through a few walls, Bob has to find another line of work and is recruited by a mysterious platinum blonde woman named Mirage to stop a rouge robot on a private island. Even more hilarity ensues when Mrs. Parr finds out about Bob’s lies and goes to this island to find him.

That’s when the plot twists and everything changes for this family. At the end they learn to work together and to not be scared or ashamed of what makes them different. I think the reason I love this movie so much is because of its originality and unique story and characters. Each character in lovable, even the evil ones.

This story made me want superpowers and a giant robot that could attack me so I could show them off.

Sabreena Is In Need Of a New Bed

Sabreena is 15 and growing up way to fast. One problem I have is that she is using half of the bunk bed that her mom mom and pop pop bought her when she turned 5 years old. She is now 15 so this bed is ten years old. Shae is using the other half.

I would love to get her a platform bed in twin size and that is because for some reason a queen seems too big. If Melinda had her way Sabreena would get a queen size but to be honest I am not sure it would even fit in her room. I think it might have come to light when we repainted Sabreena’s room that a twin size platform bed would be the best option to utilize her small little piece of heaven.

More platform beds these days are utilizing under the bed for clothes and additional storage which is essential for people who have a limited space in their bedroom like Sabreena. What I like most about platform beds is all of the different options that they come in and their look. They look so sophisticated to me for some reason.

It is too bad that Melinda and I bought a new bed a few months back because the more I think about it a platform bed might have been perfect for us. We could have used the cloths storage underneath considering Melinda stores some of her cloths in Shae’s closet. Maybe we could squeeze our bed into Sabreena’s room and get a new one for us. I don’t think so but no harm in dreaming.

The Rain In Spain Falls Mainly On the Plain

Sabreena is Puerto Rican but unfortunately doesn’t speak Spanish naturally but has been taking Spanish in school since the 7th grade.  She did really good in Spanish while in middle school and is also doing well in high school.

Now that Sabreena is in high school and has done so well the past few years we decided to enroll her in honors Spanish.  So far this year she is doing well as usual.

A few weeks ago we received information about a trip to Spain over spring break in 2012 that Sabreena and a select number of students were invited to attend.  At first I thought WOW that is such a far trip and I was concerned about Sabreena being so far from home but then I thought of all the pluses of a trip like this.  My first thought was all of Spain could be a Spanish tutor to Sabreena.  What better place then Spain for Sabreena to really put her years of Spanish to good use?

We are not certain if Sabreena will be attending the trip to Spain in 2012 but I think of what a great opportunity it is.  Yes I am scared to let my baby cross the Atlantic Ocean but on the other hand this trip would be such a great experience that she would be able to look back on for the rest of her life.
