The Time Is Almost Here

Driving is expensive to begin with these days considering the price of gas, maintenance, etc so needless to say I’m not looking forward to the day when Sabreena gets her drivers license which is right around the corner.

Getting a car insurance quote has to be a parents biggest fear when their teen obtains there drivers license. I know right now Melinda and I pay a fortune for car insurance as I am sure a lot of American families do. I can remember not getting my drivers license until I was close to eighteen and I am not sure what my parents reasoning was behind this considering I already had a car that was given to me by my aunt. Maybe they weren’t enthused with getting a car insurance quote for their eighteen year old son. I am sure as soon as they added me to their insurance the rate doubled. I understand new drivers are a higher risk and more of a liability but are they a rate doubling risk/liability?

The good news here is that we have a few things in our favor. Sabreena is a girl and a straight A student so I am hoping that when we go to add her to our car insurance they will take those factors into consideration and have pity on us.

Despite Their Age!

I don’t care what my kids say they are close and love each other to death even thought they seem to argue, bicker and fight frequently.

This picture is from a few weeks ago but since that night Shaun and Shae ask to have a sleep over almost every night. They had one over the weekend and another one last night.  I have no idea why they want to sleep on the floor when they have perfectly comfortable twin beds but who am I to tell them what surface they should sleep on.   All I can assume is that they love each other and like spending time together.  Funny thing was last night Melinda asked if I remembered Sabreena and Shaun having sleep overs when Shaun was Shae’s age.  I do and it is funny Shaun and Shae are now having them.

Yes Sabreena gets tired of Shaun and Shae and Shaun drives Sabreena nuts and fights with Shae and Shae annoys both Sabreena and Shaun but at the end of the day I know they love each other and are there for each other.  When I see Sabreena playing and hugging Shaun and Shae it wants to make me cry because it shows me what kind of kids Melinda and I raised.  Loving ones who hopefully as they become adults and move through the world will still have a close bond that siblings should have no matter what.

First Decent Snow of 2011!!!

Here in Delaware we were suppose to get 4-8 inches of snow overnight and we did get snow yet I am not sure how much but it was enough for school to be cancelled and for me to take the day off of work.

We got an inch or so a week ago and Shae was dying to go outside and make snow angels which we never did but she made up for it today.  Shae literally just came in now for lunch but she was outside for about 3 hours.  Melinda and I were outside with her for a little while while she did some sledding and snow angel making then we came in and Sabreena took the second shift.

Shaun on the other hand is still outside.  We even put his lunch and water on the front step so he didn’t need to get undressed to come in for lunch.  I am sure we won’t see him until dinner time.

Must be nice to be a kid and love the freezing cold snow. LOL!!

It’s Birthday Time AGAIN!

I watch her every day and wonder how something so magnificent came from me. She’s smart, witty and caring. She loves her family and friends with her entire heart. She looks at the world with hopes that it can be better and goals to make it that way. She does her best each day to be an influence on her brother and sister no matter how annoying they can be.
She’s my big baby and I am so proud of everything she has done. Happy Birthday to Sabreena.

A lot can happen in 24 hours.

It was a hectic day on Saturday. We were baking, Shaun had Ice Hockey lessons, Rob was doing some handy-man work for my dad and there were tons of errands to run. During all of this Sabreena was silently suffering with some belly pains.

The kids and I were heading out to a Cookie Exchange and #FlatoutHolidayFun Party but our plans kinda crumbled. Our cookies and brownies along with yogurt and leftover spaghetti ended up being our dinner. Soon after that Sabreena mentioned that her stomach was still hurting; in fact the pains were getting worse. After she showed me exactly where she was hurting I knew we needed to head to the hospital. Her pain was localized right behind her belly button and some movement to the right.

We showed up at the hospital about 9pm Saturday night to a room full of patients; not a promising scene. After a check-in, elementary triage and the same questions asked 353 times we were told that just based on her description of her pain and touch of her belly it was a safe assumption it was appendicitis. At 11pm she was in a treatment room, donning a lovely floral hospital gown and ready to throw down with the nurse that dared approach her with a needle. She had a hellish meltdown complete with tears, screams, STOOOOOOOOPs and having to be held down. I’m not really sure where this came from but she scared her nurse, we never saw her again.

At midnight we were told she was going to be sent for a CAT scan. I called my mom and asked if she could relieve Rob at home so he could come to the hospital. Sabreena’s been writhing in pain this whole time, explaining to the docs and nurses that her pain was at an 8 or 9 the whole time. At 1am she was given a Barium swallow then told it would be 2 more hours till the CAT Scan. She dozed, received some pain meds and antibiotics and just waited. After her CAT Scan we were told to wait another hour for results.

Results came in and guess what, they see inflammation and fluid around the appendix. DUH, that’s why I brought her there. But here’s the catch, the surgeoun on duty that night refused to operate on Sabreena because he doesn’t do pediatric surgery. UGH, the local children’s hospital sent an ambulance for her and we finally arrived at AI Dupont at 5pm. After another triage, same questions and passing out in the hallway we were told that she was put on the OR board for about 9:30 am but most likely later.

Sabreena got a room, got settled in and waited some more. Finally we were cleared for surgery; it’s 11:30 am. Almost 2 hours later she’s done, in recovery and doped up on morphine, fentanyl and toradol; the jibberish comes back. We found out not only did she have the beginning’s stages of appendicitis but there was also evidence of a rupture ovarian cyst.  Whether the cyst caused the inflammation on the appendix or if they are at all related we will never now. Over 6 hours later she’s finally awake but super groggy. We went for a walk, got a couple small bits to eat and she was a new person. No more narcotics for her!

That was the longest 24 hours of my life but she’s all better and we are headed home in the morning.

Wordless Wednesday – The Three Amigos

This was taken on Thanksgiving.  I can’t believe they are all smiling and looking at the camera.

There’s a New Breed of Nerd

We always talk about Sabreena being a nerd.  We call her nerd or geek in a joking conversation and often include her friends in the mix. This weekend as I was corralling her and her friends out of the bounce house to make way for another group I referred to them as the geek squad.

You see Sabreena is a straight A student, member of National Junior Honor Society, completed her mandatory 75 hours of community service to graduate 8th grade in the 6th grade, is in 3 Advanced Placement classes and hangs with other kids who have very similar resume.

The difference between Sabreena and the nerds that are depicted on tv and movies is that Sabreena is also a pretty cool kid.  She’s got the book smarts but she’s also a pretty creative kid whose into music, painting, drawing and crafts.  Her friends are funny and into music too. One thing I noticed is that they are all pretty fashionable too; no pocket protectors here.  So while we may call her nerd she really takes it as a complement;  even though she took the joke a little too far for her 8th grade pictures.
