Over the years I’ve been considered an influencer. I guess the blog has given my a bit of a spotlight and I’ve been able to share my thoughts and ideas for hot products, adventures and technology. It’s time to have #OneConversation #ActAgainstAids #CDC

I think I’ve done a good job at parenting my oldest when it comes to being open and honest about the dangers of unsafe sex, drug use and illicit behaviors. Some conversations aren’t easy to have to ensure you and your family are safe the job needs to get done.

Sabreena has been exposed to a lot in her 19 years. She’s aware of what’s really going on in the world and the struggles that many face by prejudice of all kinds.
I was approached to bring to your attention of a plague affecting the Latinos and Latinas living in the United States. Did you know Hispanics account for 19% of those affected with HIV/AIDS but we only account for 16% of the population? The disproportion comes from the lack of outreach and education, language barriers and discrimination. As a culture Hispanics don’t talk about personal issues, especially those that are considered taboo. We hope deep down that our family and friends are taking care of themselves, making the right choices.

Sin Vergüenza (which translates to Without Shame) is an exciting, entertaining, and suspenseful telenovela web series, produced by Los Angeles-based AltaMed Healthcare Services. It takes viewers into the lives of a dynamic Mexican-American family coping with issues around HIV and sexual health. Each family member represents a different age group, sexual orientation, and marital status and faces unique challenges. Each person is also at risk of getting HIV.

The high risk of contracting HIV/AIDS isn’t inclusive to just the Hispanic community but the high rate at which this demographic is being infected needs your attention. If current trends continue, an estimated 1 in 36 Hispanic/Latino men and 1 in 106 Hispanic/Latina women will be diagnosed with HIV at some point in their lifetime.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recognized this epidemic and launched We Can Stop HIV One Conversation At A Time. This national campaign encourages open lines of communication between the Hispanic community to educate and inform family, friends and loved ones of the dangers of unprotected sex. This call to action stresses the need to talk about HIV/AIDS and how no one is immune; no matter the marital status, age and sexual orientation.

The choices we make stay with us. The information is available and now it’s time to share it with those that need it. Start the conversation and have facts on hand if you suspect someone you love is at risk. One Conversation at a Time is free to use, has downloadable materials and has facts on how to protect each other. It’s time to let go of the stigma and educate, especially our youth. Young people, aged 13-24 are especially affected by HIV. They comprised 16% of the U.S. population, but accounted for 26% of all new HIV infections in 2010.

There’s so much to live for. Let’s not waste another minute. Share what you now know about the rising rate of HIV/AIDS in the Hispanic community and how to stop it in its tracks with #OneConversation.

Vicks #BehindEar Thermometer Review

A couple of weeks ago I was invited to a #BehindEar luncheon in Philadelphia to discuss kid’s health, flu season and to see some new Vick’s products in action.

The discussion was led by Dr Meg Meeker, M.D., author of “The 10 Habits of Happy Mothers”. As moms we are told to listen to the doctor, but honestly I take all doctor’s advice with a grain of salt. As a mom I’m more inclined to follow my gut. Things like washing hands, taking vitamins, drinking plenty of water and getting outside for exercise and fresh air are tops on our list for staying healthy and strong. Medications are a last resort for my family.

Things like adding humidity in the air has always been a part of our lives. When Shaun was little he suffered with breathing problems and extreme eczema. We quickly learned that increasing the humidity in his room would allow for a more restful sleep. Six years ago our choices for powerful humidifiers were limited; we ended up purchasing a Venta Sonic for over $100. Today Vicks has figured out how to get the same powerful mist for a much more reasonable price.

Shae came down with a cough/cold last week so we put the Vicks Germ Free Humidifier to work. Along with applying good old fashioned Vicks Vapo Rub and using the Vicks Plug In Waterless Vaporizer and using a trusted, age appropriate cough medicine Shae was sleeping better through the night and the cough lasted on a couple nights. While we stopped the medicine, Plug-in and Vicks Vapo Rub, the humidifier is still running.

The luncheon was primarily based around the new Vicks Behind Ear Thermometer. I’m not fan. Shae came into the room I instantly knew she had a fever. I ripped open the packaging of the new thermometer, read the simple directions and took her temperature. It was registering below her normal temperature. I then took my own temperature, normal. I took Shaun’s temperature, normal. I took Shae’s again and was getting readings of 99.3-100.7. I took out my trusty oral thermometer and got a reading of 102.4 that kept rising. For the next couple of hours I tested the Behind Ear Thermometer on the family, thinking I just needed to get the right angle or get it in the right spot. I never mastered it. I’ll stick with what works for me.

Vicks is a trusted brand in our home and I’m not going to stop using our staple of Vapo Rub. The humidifier has found a new home in Shae’s room and I’m stocking up on plug-in refills for those stuffy noses that will happen.

Norelco Senso Touch 3D Review and Giveaway

I am not sure where I stand when it comes to shaving but I would love to know if I am the minority or the majority. Do men love to shave? I will be honest and say I 100% hated shaving until I received the Norelco Senso Touch 3D electric shaver. I would think ahead on what days I would have to shave for work and knew those days I would be irritated.

I know you are going to say that I need to say that because I received this for review but I am serious when I say this is the best shaver I have ever tried. I still don’t love to shave but I also don’t hate it like I used to. My skin is extremely sensitive so I could only shave in the shower when my face was wet and the hairs were soft otherwise my skin would get so irritated and cut up but with the Senso Touch 3D I am able to shave when I get out of the shower with no problems at all.

The Norelco Senso Touch 3D (1290x) is a wet and dry electric shaver so I now have options. I can use the shaver in the shower if I want which I still haven’t done or once I get out which I have done probably 25 times already. With a tradition razor and shaving cream I would only shave twice a week otherwise my face would be all messed up but now that I am using the Norelco Senso Touch 3D I am able to shave daily with ZERO problems meaning no skin irritation or anything. When I was in college I tried using an electric shaver and I HATED it so I was very hesitant when I received the Senso Touch 3D but I am pleasantly surprised and will NEVER go back to my old razor, we are through!!!

I’ve never used an electric razor and heard lots of things like it would take weeks for your skin to get used to it but the 1st night I was impressed. Instead of shaving 2-3 times a week I can now shave nightly if I want and not worry about my skin afterwards.

Keeping Smiles Big and Healthy with Crest and Oral-B

Oral hygiene might not be the most interesting topic but Oral-B Pro-Health FOR ME makes it more fun for kids. I recently hosted a “MommyParties” with Shaun’s Cub Scout troop to talk about ways to keep the boy’s teeth and mouth clean and healthy.

Each week at the scout meeting we discuss a new topic, sometimes it’s about family, sometimes it’s about nutrition sometimes it’s about safety. I thought introducing Oral-B Pro-Health FOR ME would be a fun way to not only have my party but give the boys a little lesson. I know from experience kids don’t always follow through on proper brushing so I knew this would be a perfect chance to teach a little something to kids from a different perspective.

I started the “presentation” asking the boys if they knew how long they were supposed to brush their teeth or how often they were supposed to floss. One thing I loved was that some of them knew to use a song like Happy Birthday or Twinkle Twinkle Little Star to ensure they brushed their teeth long enough. The whole thing ended up being a very educational experience for the boys and a very entertaining with the unique answers they were giving. It wasn’t at all boring, we made it fun with balloons and a cute smile craft and a sample of Cars II Gummy Vitamins.

Toothbrushes and toothpaste might not sound like a fun gift but the kids loved the gift bags provided by Oral-B Pro Health FOR ME. Each boy (and some siblings) went home with a toothbrush, full size toothpaste, pack of flossers, various coupons and a wealth of information they will hopefully us.

Get Your Vitamin C With Emergen-C

I have been taking vitamins for about three to four years so it is only seems natural that the kids should take vitamins as well. The kids get a gummy multi vitamin and a gummy fiber vitamin and we just recently starting adding Emergen-C to the mix. The kid’s loves getting their vitamins and if for some reason Melinda or I forget to give them their vitamin they are sure to let us know.

Recently we receive Emergen-C Kidz Vitamin C supplement in grape, orange and fruit punch flavor. Emegen-C Kids Vitamin C provided the kids with 250mg of vitamin C per serving. All you do is mix one packet with 4-6oz of water and mix. The kids do drink orange juice but to me there is no such thing as to much vitamin C.

Do You Suffer from Adult Acne?

Healthy clear skin is something that comes pretty natural to me. Rob on the other had has suffered with occasional bouts of adult acne. He’s tried many products and while lots of them work for short periods of time he hasn’t found anything to solve the problem long term.
