Fabric Bead Necklace Kids Craft

Crafting is becoming a big passion for Shae. I’m not talking about cutting out construction paper and gluing it to each other to make odd shapes. I’m talking about thought out creations that have a purpose. These fabric beads happened after seeing my trunk full of fabric and other random stuff. She wanted to make something permanent, something that was useful not something that would’ve ended up in the recycle bin in a month.Making Fabric Beads by Kids #craft

Making Fabric Beads by Kids #craft

We started off with a stack of thin fabrics in a variety of colors and patterns. We cut them into strips of all lengths and widths.  Don’t exceed 1 inch wide as your bead with be very big.  Lengths can vary from  5″ to 12 depending how thick your child wants the beads.

Hold your strip flat and apply a thin strip of glue the entire length. Using a pencil start rolling the strip up. Making Fabric Beads by Kids #craft Don’t roll too tight as it will be difficult to remove. Slide your rolled up fabric gently off your pencil and set aside to dry. Use an extra touch of glue if the end isn’t secure. If you find your pencil is getting too much glue, use another pencil.

*roll your bead close to the pointy end, it’ll be easier to remove.

After all of your beads have set and seem to have hardened (we let them sit overnight) you’re ready to create your jewelry. Shae made a necklace using a thin suede cord.Making Fabric Beads by Kids #craft

I created a cool knot/loop on one end and when she done I created a larger knot to close the necklace. Elastic cord would work well too and then you won’t have issues with closures.

DIY Necklace and Pendant Upcycle #craft #jewelry

I love love love jewelry.  I especially love necklaces.  My earrings are diamond studs Rob got me a few years ago that I never take out. My wedding band stays in place with the occasional fashion ring on the other hand. But necklaces get changed often dependent on my mood. I have some favorites like this Lisa Leonard Lots of Love pendant and necklace. I was shopping last week and rummaging through a clearance section in the craft aisle and found a pendant. I knew it was missing something but knew immediately I could rescue it and upcycle it into something adorable.

I had a broken silver necklace at home so I knew I could resurrect it into something pretty.DIY Upcycled Necklace #bird #clay

I started by fixing the necklace with a heavy gauge jump ring and then cutting the chain right in the center. Fixing Broken Necklace #bird #clay

Then I added the same heavy gauge jump rings to the pendant and attached it to the necklace. This is an instructional video on how to work with jump rings correctly. Using a heavy/thick ring will lessen the chance of it coming apart while wearing. There is always the soldering option but I’m not there yet.

The empty nest needed eggs. Blue is a my favorite color so I knew a couple Robin’s eggs would look like they belonged.  Rolling out the clay into the right shape took the longest time;  making sure to tap the ends to get it round but not flat. After getting 2 almost identical eggs  I was ready to bake. It just takes 20 minutes in a 225° oven and they are hard like little pebbles.

I have a glaze that gives the clay a shine after baking but clear nail polish would work just fine.

Using a couple dabs of glue I placed the eggs in the nest and let it set for a couple hours. This glue dries completely clear.

Don’t throw away broken jewelry. Give it a new life with the purchase of a $2 pendant or create your own pendant with buttons, clay, earrings or beads.DIY Upcycled Necklace #bird #clay

The Day of Starbucks, Diamonds and a Skeleton Key

Today was not only Thanksgiving but it was also my birthday. And it has been a great birthday indeed! It all started last weekend for a Girlfriends Getaway Weekend with me and my best friend Stacy and finished today with my family gathering together for Turkey Day.

girls getaway weekend

sorry for the blurriness, taken from a cellphone

Rob is terrible at keeping a secret so he tends to shop RIGHT before my birthday. He came home with a familiar golden bag and beloved red coffee cup. I assumed the bag contained my 3 mother’s rings that have been at the jeweler getting serviced/cleaned/inspected/tightened. He surprised floored me with a gift of diamond earrings. I’ve been asking for them for 10 years and he just realized I actually do deserved them.

The kids gave me this lovely skeleton key necklace from Etsy (I even wrote about it here) and a collection of handmade clay figurines and trinkets.

I’m a lucky girl to be surrounded by people that love me! Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

A Girl’s Best Friend | Giveaway WSRW Blog Party

Who’s your best friend? Is it diamonds? Maybe they aren’t my besties but I have a deep love and respect for them. Diamond.com has been serving customers since 1999 with a passion and devotion unmatched by others. Their diamond rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets and woven custom lanyards are designed with an emphasis on both quality and enduring style. All diamonds used in our fine jewelry collection meet specific quality thresholds established by our merchandisers. Our diamonds are pre-selected from a network of highly skilled gemologists who mark, cut, shape and polish each diamond to bring out its optimal brilliance and beauty.

My jewelry collection just grew with the addition of this Daisy Diamond Bracelet. It’s dainty and pretty and modern and sparkly thanks to the 5 clusters of diamonds in the middle of each flower. Perfect with jeans and a tee or a twinset and slacks this bracelet is a compliment to any woman’s wardrobe.

My current diamond collection is small in size; a diamond band from my father, my platinum wedding band and several pendants from Rob. As he’s discussed before my engagement ring was a Tanzanite and I’ve yet to receive those diamond studs I’ve been asking for the last 10 years. The rest of my jewelry is comprised of mine and the kid’s birthstones and lots of silver.

Mother’s Day is around the corner and Diamond.com has so much to choose from whatever your personal style and taste is.  Classic studs are always a great choice but a more contemporary colored diamond might be more my choice.  The yellow and blue stones might be my new favorite.

Diamond.com procures diamonds from authorized sources and validated through the Kimberly Process, the world’s most respected international certification process that uses strict requirements to control the production of rough diamonds and prevent illicit diamonds from entering the country.

Win the SAME Daisy Silver and Diamond Bracelet ($350 value) that I received. Visit Diamond.com and pick out an ultimate dream diamond jewelry piece you’d love to own.

Melinda’s Finger Is Snobby!!!

I am not a guy who knows anything about jewelry and when Melinda and I got married I was overwhelmed with all of the diamond engagement ring options.

When buying an engagement ring you have the three C’s to consider (cut, clarity and color) then you have the weight and setting. This is enough to send any man into a tail spin. On top of that you can get Pave Engagement Rings, Tacori Engagement Rings, Solitaire Engagement Rings and even Eternity Rings. This is why I decided to get Melinda a Tanzanite ring for her engagement ring. It is nice yet simple and I didn’t stress out over all of the diamond features. I did however step it up for her wedding band and got her a platinum diamond channel set ring which she loves. I originally got her a white gold band but her finger was allergic to white gold. Her finger was so snobby it broke out in a rash due to the white gold so we needed to get her a platinum band. To this day we joke about it and I always tell her how convenient that her finger only likes platinum. I wonder if a lot of women use this excuse just to get platinum rings. LOL. I am only kidding but if I was a woman that is what I would say.

What kind of wedding ring are you sporting? Does your finger break out if anything other then platinum touches it?

Holiday Wishlist 2010-Simon & Lucy My Story Necklace Giveaway

Gift giving should be from the heart whether it’s Christmas, Mother’s Day or a Birthday. Give mom the gift of love and honor this Holiday Season with a My Story personalized necklace from Simon and Lucy.

simon and lucy my story necklace

I design and hand stamp a collection that I call: the My Story collection. I love to design a piece for a person that encompasses everything important to them from the past, present and perhaps the future. It’s a unique process that allows me to learn a little bit about the person I am designing for in order to design a necklace just for them. Even if you don’t know where to start, I do and I will help you through the process and make it relatively painless for you.

It’s quite magical when my clients see their necklace and they start reminiscing as they look at each charm. I LOVE it and so do they!

All pieces are one-of-a-kind and created with you in mind.

A My Story necklace is a custom piece of jewelry that tells your story, your journey, your life, your future. Included are the details closest to you; children’s names, birthdates, symbols and more. Earlier in the year I received my own My Story necklace; it included of course my kid’s names, my nieces, my parents, a blue crystal to symbolize my birthstone and a special pendant for my mother, a very special person on my life.

Mother’s Jewelry with a Twist from Gemvara Evulation

My sister and sister-in-law became first time moms last year (11 days apart) so when Gemvara approached me about reviewing a custom Letter Pendant I knew it would be a perfect gift for my sister. You see I’ve been a mom for many years, I received my fair share of mother’s rings, gemstone pendants, macaroni necklaces and more. I thought the Letter Pendant would be a timeless but unique piece of mother’s jewelry for my sister.

My sister and BIL are done having kids, Madi is their first and will be their last so I knew getting an “M” initial would be something cherished forever. This necklace and pendant gift serves a dual purpose for Kim actually; obviously the “M” stands for Madi but it also stands for Matt, her husband who baby Madison is named after.

I got to choose from 16 gemstones, 8 metals and 4 chain styles. This made for endless combinations, perfect for any situation, personal style and budget.  For my sister I choose a silver pendant and chain with a “diamond” accent (her birthstone).  I opened the gift box and was greeted by a beautifully bright and lovely piece, I knew my sister was going to love it. The necklace and pendant came beautifully wrapped a couple weeks after deciding on the design. This is because is pendant is custom made to the buyers request.

Designer Ji Hwang designs jewelry with a fluid graceful line, like strokes of a painter’s brush. Her pieces are often inspired by the natural world, abstracted into modern sculpture. Her work reveals nature’s subtle aesthetic, capturing the beauty of its form, the simplicity of its design, and the vitality of its colors without embellishment. She often finds that by simplifying, she often can best reflect the essence of nature. A classically trained jewelry artist educated at Parsons School of Design and Pratt Institute in New York City, Ji’s work is instantly recognizable to jewelry connoisseurs.

Gemvara is about more than mother’s  jewelry and letter pendants.  With a wealth of talented designers contributing to the online shop Gemvara offers it’s buyer the chance to customize almost everything to suit your needs and wants.

Gemvara jewelry is made to order just for you:

  • We hand-select high-quality conflict-free natural gems to perfectly fit your design.
  • A 3D model is created in wax and used to mold the setting.
  • We use recycled or responsibly mined precious metals to cast your jewelry.
  • The piece is meticulously finished and polished by hand.
  • Your stones are carefully set into place by a skilled craftsperson.
  • We quality-check every detail to make sure it meets our high standards.
